On the side of my Exhibit Engine project I have had plans to do one simple but important website for two years now. Well, now it's near completion and will be launched in few days. It is:
Digital Photo Gallery Database
Digital Photo Gallery Database is new public free service where registered users may enter info in their galleries and everyone can browse and search them. You have all important data to search for: keywords (title, keywords, description, owner name), camera(s), lens(es). Every gallery is accompanied by demo thumbnail (stored on my server). Whole thing is extremely fast and flexible. I will add many new features like update notice service, reviews, ratings etc. soon after release.
The public browser will look something like this (content is foo):
http://photography-on-the.net/promo/alpha_browser.jpg
and gallery editor something like
http://photography-on-the.net/promo/alpha_edit.jpg
Of course this kind of service is based on mutual trust that no one spams the service with bloated info or false info - I will use measures to detect and counterattack these attempts but I'm sure they are not needed because all you guys are so cool and bright :)
So if you just wait a few days it'll be all yours. Meanwhile, beta testers are wanted so shout your name if you're interested in testing the basic functionality of the system.
I'm looking forward to see all digital galleries on the net listed there. I think It'll be a possible dream.
All comments and ideas are of course welcome.

Can you tell more about the system?
You cannot store pictures in it? Or only references to pictures on your own server?
If so, can you manage it with your exibit software? So that you update your local gallery and that it automaticly updates your site?
Will it be open source? And if it will be, do you want people to look at the source before you open it to the public?

The way I read it, what Pekka is running is a searchable database of the photo galleries available on the net. The database will contain all the information about your gallery and the pictures contained, but the pictures remain in your own gallery.

Thats what i thought too. But then i was thinking, why would you put the specs and extra info on your own site AND on pekka's site. Thats only doable when there's some automatic way of doing this.

OK: to clear some confusion:
This is a database for promoting and storing info of your galleries on internet.
Currently you make a new gallery, announce it in some forum(s), in few days the announcement is gone and no one will ever see it again, unless seeking google for "digital photo gallery" which will not help you much.
Each user may enter all subgallery info into database: if you have pbase account with several folder, you can enter each folder with respective info, or just the main level - your choice.
By gallery info I mean gallery info, not info of each photo. See the screeshots.
On the page you can seek galleries with detailed info: find all galleries using Canon 1D, all galleries about aviation or weddings, all galleries by john, all galleries which have used 300D and 50 f/1.4, all galleries featuring landscape photos which sell photos/prints.
That is the meaning. A central storage of information for promotional purposes, and for preventing your valuable galleries to be lost in cyberspace. A way to get you more visitors.
Adding a new gallery could not be easier - just select from dropdown menus, type header and short description. takes less than minute per gallery.
The whole thing is on my server using my code which no one has or will ever see. This makes it secure and easy for me to manage.

Sounds like a great idea! Do the gallery entries on the first page change over time? Are they replaced by newer entries? Random?

They are always displayed in realtime (when page is loaded all content is recalculated from database). Lists can be whatever you like. Any preferences? :)

I like the galleries to be random. Each time the page is loaded, a random, different selection comes up.

Having used the Beta to load two different galleries into the database now,. I am impressed.
A straight forward interface with a very appealing front end on the search side,. complete with the a choice of display image for each gallery listed!
This is a really great looking project.
You guys should give it a try and list your galleries....
(that is,. unless you don't want anyone to see your pics.. a diceision I had to struggle with  )
