What is your favorite sharpening method? USM? Highpass filter/Hardlight?

Just USM in photoshop....

.2-.5 radius.. at anywhere between 100 - 300.. usually around 200.

Almost exlusively sharpen with a soft edge mask and USM

Edge mask is based on method from an old PS resource book for which I created an action. For an average RGB image with edges best defined in the red channel:

Duplicate Red Channel | Find Edges | Invert Image | Maximum (4px) | Median (4px) | Gaussian Blur (4px) | Load selection from red channel copy

Then USM = 100, 1 px radius, 0 threshold (thresholding accomplished via the edge mask).

Photoshop USM for me, too. And if that doesn't cut it, then the old reliable honing oil and sharpening stone usually does the trick.

I adopted the Scary Sharp (http://www.shavings.net/SCARY.HTM) method for all my chisels and plane blades. :D

For digital photos, I like the method described by Russell Brown (http://www.russellbrown.com/tips/moviesps/AdvancedSharpening.mov) where you make two very sharpened layers (like 300/1/1) and blend one as Darken and the other as Lighten.

I created an action for this, and it works well for me.

These are some interesting twists I haven't seen before. I'll have to give them a shot too.

I find myself using the highpass/overlay method a lot.

That is what I love out this forum. A bunch of different ways to do something that I have not heard of but will definately try.
I have been using the Dup Layer and High Pass filter and really like the results. Tried FocalBlade and it works, but it is a long process time and the puter I run PS on is no slouch.
Thanks folks.

I generally switch to Lab Color and use USM on the Lightness channel, then switch back to RGB mode. This tends to minimize halos around the edges of things.

Got it from Kelby's Photoshop for Digital Photographers book.
