I know there are TONS of threads about websites and I have read several of them but I still can't get my question answered. I want a website that is for veiwing proofs only. I like my printing company and want to continue to use them. Smugmug and others have the cart option. Even if I tell clients they must order through me, I am afraid family members will order with out know ing better. Is there a simple place to have a website that is for proofing only?

If you already have a site you can always add a page for viewing only.
You can set the page up in PS and then drop it to your site.

I'm dying to help you out here - but I'm not sure I understand your question...what do you mean by 'family will order without knowing better' - from whose site?

There are several ways you can have pictures for viewing only.... for example... we took some pics over NYE - and I am presenting them to my clients click here. (http://www.d-z.co.uk/nye_2007)... I would send them a link: To see your pictures, go to www.d-z.co.uk/nye_2007

This is achieved by simply adding pages to your OWN web site. That way no-one can get confused...

HOWEVER - if you DONT have your own site, you can always use something like www.flickr.com - where you create an account and can upload pictures. You can then point people to YOUR specific galleries on flickr.

OR - you can use an external server like WWW.MEDIAMAX.COM who are brilliant (for a small fee) you can have UNLIMITED space, and load your pics up there - and you can password protect the pages you send to your clients.

Does this help?

Try the PBase.com site. It sounds to me like this is what you have in mind: I had similar needs. I've got a lab I've been using for years, am very happy with them and at this point I'm happy to coordinate the wedding and event orders myself.

Go to: http://www.pbase.com/sapearl

I only began using them a couple of months ago but use it for showing my wedding, bar mitzvah and other social event proofs as well as some personal family stuff. After conferring with another very helpful user I even figured out how to imbed an order form.

For just showing your photos (no e-cart, or other shopping facilities) you can't beat the price at $23/yr. for 400MB of storage. You can even try free for 30 days. - Stu

thanks sapearl. This is what I was asking, sorry I was not clear. I do not have a site already and am looking to make one. I had considered smugmug but do not like the e-cart, I want to do my own orders. Hope this makes more sense.

You were perfectly clear to me, probably because we were in the same boat :D .

I tried for a couple of years to get a site up and running, but between the wedding work and my regular job I just didn't have the time to teach myself. So I took my daughter's advice, hired a pro, fed her my copy, requirements and galleries, and she custom assembled exactly what I wanted.

I still needed a "generic" sort of gallery to start, for proofing (this may change as the workflow evolves) and PBase seemed like an adequate starting point. It is not perfect, and is a little clunky, but some have discovered how to customize it with beautiful results. Check out some of the members's galleries and you'll see what I mean. - Stu

I use SmugMug. They have an option of turning off ordering. That's what I do.
