When transferring pictures from the CF card to my PC, do I need canon's software for JPEG files, or just for RAW. Are the files stored on the CF card in JPEG format (I am shooting JPEG FINE).
Can I just copy the files over and open them with Photoshop, or must I go through the Canon software for all files JPEG & RAW?
Didnt install the software yet, just trying to learn the camera first.

You just need it (or an alternate) for Raw files.
If you are shooting jpeg, you can get them directly...

Thanks Bubber, i just got a DRebel today and I am a bit overwhelmed by it. But I am intent on mastering it, even if it takes me 20 yrs...LOL

Hi cgratti
I don't use any canon tools for getting my files. when (if I ever shoot RAW, but that is another story) I copy the files from the card to the camera.
I take the card out of the camera, put it in to my USB reader, browse to the location where the files are, drag and drop them in to the dir that I want them saved to.
This is the same for either raw or jpg. after all they are just files sitting on the card.
If the file is raw I just open them in CS (photoshop) and do the post processing there.
Since I am new to all things photograhy I am shooting in jpg. Untill I get better I might change to RAW.
I hope this is clear as mud.
PS. After reading all the hassles you have had getting the camera, I am glad you got it (at last) and I hope you enjoy it.

Thanks for the info, I will try that. It seems easier than trying to convert them on the fly... And yes, I finally got my camera, and I will NEVER, and I repeat NEVER buy from them again, its B&H from now on, or a local retailer.....

I breathed a sigh of relief to see your purchase turned out fine. :D
One thing to keep in mind with JPGs - every time you save them from a viewer, editor, etc. they go through JPG compression, and the quality can degrade.
I put all of my JPGs in a folder when I download them, and I NEVER save files into that directory again. Open them up to work on them, but save them somewhere else - or with a different file name.
Same thing applies if you email them to someone - if you open them with your viewer and save them, something will be lost. Save them as a file so you don't go through the compression extra times.
Hope this helps
Have Fun

Once I take the photos to my HD, I convert them to tiff before I do anything else, so that way I can save them as amny times as I like, I also keep a copy of JPEG to burn to a CD.

Wo! Wo! Wo! Bro,
I've had my Drebel for a month and I am just now considering RAW. You've got a lot on your plate. Get to know your new camera, memorize it inside and out. Shoot JPEG initially and play around with the files and PSE2 or what ever you're using. Get use to the software at times it can be daunting. Learn how to read a histogram. Go here http://www.luminous-landscape.com/ for some A$$ kicking tutorials. Some will disagree it's just my 2 cents.

thats what I plan on doing, just gonna go out this weekend and shoot alot of pictures with every exposure the camera offers... To learn the camera inside and out..
then I can really apply my learned skills when I start shooting for family events and weddings and stuff... But for now, I want to learn how to do the simple things the right way, no hury to get into the thick of it just yet.
