Making 3D photos - anyone tried this?

I was looking at NASA's Mars Rover website and saw an article about making your own 3D stereo photos: http://marsrovers.jpl.nasa.gov/spotlight/3d01.html

Did you try this yourself? Is it hard or easy? Were the results interesting?
