How much should one charge for say a 4x6 or 5x7 or 8x10 to be sold on Smugmug.

I shoot mostly sports and my pictures are at least as good as anyone else's in town (better in my opinion) and I am only one of two or three people that do post pictures for sale. The other two that post do it sporatically at best.

I do NOT expect to actually make a living off of sales nor to return my time investment. But it seems like I am way under what I see in most places and on most sites.

Like I said, I am NOT billing myself as a professional and I dont expect that kind of compensation. I would just like to know what a fair fee would be, if there is such a beast...

When you find out, let me know. I am in the same boat with ya!

It's something i enjoy, but it would be great to be able to make a little money from it to recover some of my debt from equipment costs.

I suggest that you look at the pricing schemes of your competitors including (1) photographers in your region who shoot similar subjects and (2) photographers on smugmug and similar sites that shoot similar subjects. Then, you can decide whether you want to price in the same stream, a little under or a little above. If you are primarily selling to parents, get a sense of what other photo packages are available and price accordingly.

Please know that I am not a professional either, but have been thinking about pricing some future prints.

First, I highly suggest looking into Exposure Manager to sell prints for any event 'tog...
Exposure Manager (http://www.exposuremanager.com/aff/mikejanesphotography)
The reason being they are BY FAR the best company out there IMHO, they only work with event photographers and not the general public so everything about there service is directed right at event photog needs, take the lowest comission that I've seen, have the best prints & quality (actually looked over by a person instead of just printed auto like other companies), plain and simply from my experience they are the best and anyone I've ever talked to that's tried ExMan compared to others has said the same thing ---commercial over, and no I don't work for them :)

Price wise, look at the competition around you and that will give you the best idea (like the above responses suggested). 4x6's - I don't sell them straight out, the profit margin sucks because many people know thats the standard size and don't want to pay $4-5 for them. However, if you bought a package deal from my site you'd get the 4x6's in that. 5x7's are $6 while 8x10's are $10. This is cheap compared to a lot of places out here where there prices are almost double/triple that. I shoot leagues where parents are not "loaded" with cash; and make a decent amount on doing portraits/team pics so the action shots are kind of just extra and I want to keep them at prices parents can buy.
