Hey guys...

so here is my story..I went to go pick up my camera..and the neckstrap was hooked on something that I didn't see..and it slipped out of my hand..and it fell to the floor...now I looked in the warranty...and they say they won't cover for anything like that...[obviously...] now the only thing that has happened to my camera..is that the...trigger button? lol..I don't know what you guys call it..but the button you press to take the picture:P you have to push it a little harder than before..to make it take the picture...like..you know..you press it half way..and then it focuses..then right when you push it a little bit..it takes the picture...well, mine..I can make it go over the "click" and just do nothing..and then I have to push it a bit harder..and then it takes the picture...

what I'm wondering is..would the drop have caused this? is it an expensive fix if I take it to a local camera shop that I trust?..thanks for your answers guys!
I could send it into canon...because it has zero scratches on it..and they'd believe me if I said that I didn't drop it...but...honesty is a virtue right?...thanks in advance!

I, being quite morally flexible and already having my window-seat ticket to hell, would have no problem sending it back to Canon saying that you pressed the button and something internally failed, and have them replace it. I would also sell it on Craigslist as "like new" and let someone try it first before buying, and then recover my money that way and buy another new one just to make sure there are no future problems.

I guess it comes down to how you sleep at night.. (I take lots of pills anyway).

Just send it to them. It's probably nothing big, they'll fix it in a minute.

Sounds like you bent the frame, and the shutter release (the button that you press to take the pictures) is binding. The camera should be sent to a good shop (or to Canon) for a repair.

I believe the frame on the 30D is magnesium (like the 20D). Yes! Canon can tell it's been dropped (what else would bend the frame).

You'll find that any local repair shop might have to send it off to Canon anyway as they may not be able to get the parts - or have the facilities for DSLR repairs - unless they are Canon Authorised repairers. And if it's under warrenty Canon may not honour a later 'proper' warrenty repair after a non-authorised repairer had had a go at it!
So, off the Canon then.
What do you tell them?
If under warrenty they may not ask but just repair it FoC; they may come back and tell you that this is a chargable repair, in which case you bite the bullet and pay up.
'phone Canon and tell them that the shutter button is sticky and that the camera is under warrenty. If they ask what happened then it's up to your conscience at that point, if they don't you could just follow instructions, send it to them and see what happens.
PS I don't think that 20Droger is correct about the bent frame - most likely the button/microswitch have become dislodged, I had a similar problem when I whacked a battery grip on a 10D against something (a new switch cured that one).
Getting rid for a sticky switch repair seems over the top too.....................

Send it! If the gear doesn't work right, you won't use it!

Remind me not to trust you, ever. You fall into the same category as someone who cheats at solitaire.

Semper non rippus-offus!

They will know if it is a failure or damaged by impact. I don't recall the rates but there is a rate structure and it would fall into one of 3 rate catgeories. They don't charge by the part or how easy it was to fix. It's all broken down and precalculated.

I had a similar repair done a grip once (not the body) and it was a $125 - can't tell you what Canon will charge though.

Send it to Canon and you will find out how much it costs. $100.00?
