In the ctegory of "We all make mistakes", I was playing with the 10D and Alien Bee lights trying to get a balance of lighting. I decided to add a gel and barn door to the backdrop light (which I wasn't previously using). So I start taking a couple shots for metering referrence and am not seeing the 3rd light in the images. (You see where this is going yet?).... So of course I up the output of the strobe....1/4....1/2....full...nothing. Then the odor hit! That acrid smell of plastic as its reaching melting stage. Yep you guessed it. I still had the shipping cover over the modeling light and strobe tube. Fortunately it wasn't hot enough to melt. I did let it cool down a for a minute or 2 and it still works like a champ.
