I proposed this earlier, and seeing how nobody really made aynthing out of it, lets try again? How would be interested in say a weekend throughout southern Alberta shooting and what not? Sheldon proposed spring would be best...any oppinions?

My Ideas:

Friday: Meet in Calgary, arrange P/U's, hotels etc..shoot downtown in afternoon and then dinner, than some night life (could be interesting on a hockey night)

Saturday: Southern alberta (Lethbridge etc.. - Sheldon's territory)

Sunday: Banff and Rockies

Any oppinions on if this is too much? I'm open :D

Hmm......could just be me, but that seems like a lot of traveling in just one week end. Although a southern Alberta POTN meet would be nice to see at some point. Lots to see no matter where you go........Medicine Hat area, Cypress Hills area, Roucky Mountain area, etc.

And waiting until at least spring is most preferable in my mind if I were to participate.

As mentioned on other threads, I would be interested. I think one full day or even one overnight would be enough. I have no preference to time or location. If there is a time someone would like to commit to, just let me know and I will see what is on the agenda. Being my own boss, I can get time away from work most often but there are a few critical times on some projects that might be a bit tough, plus I have lots of time booked for ski trips, canoeing and hiking up to next fall already.

Just noticed the other thread shortly after I wrote in this one. So I'll watch both I guess.

Seeing as it seemed the last one got lost (or atleast I thought it did) lets make this the planning thread - who's got ideas?

I'm pretty available if I have due enough notice, although during the week I'm at school and March 4-9 i'll be on a 72' schooner out west - any other time works for me :)

Well, even being a newby to photography I'd really like something like this. I'm in Calgary. Banff would be amazing too. Personally I have to avoid March if possible due to a night class. (Tuesday nights, and all day Saturday. My finals are in March)

But yeah, I think it's an excellent idea. Might even give me a good chance to meet with more experienced photographers and learn tons of stuff you just never read about in books!

BearLeeAlive

A full day trip would be great, maybe an overnighter. I would be game for anything and other than a few set events with a bit of warning I could make myself available almost anytime. I think the first thing would be to set a date, the location(s) could be figured out after that.

Right now I have nothing in April or the first half of May. I could swing something during the week easily too.

Let's see what others think.

Hi All, small intro is due: retired for one year now (I’m sure you guys wouldn’t like it  ). Always had a camera of sorts and then purchased the Canon T70 just after they became available but really began playing/learning digital in the last four years, started with a very small Olympus (great snap shot camera) then improved to the Sony 828 (exceptional but for the fringing problem) and shortly after retirement my good wife gifted me with a 30D to which I’ve added some pieces of glass; Canon EF-S 17-85 IS, EF 70-300 DO IS USM and a couple of Sigma lens, EX 105 DG Macro and a 50-500 APO DG HSM not mentioned some other various and sundry photographic accouterments. That’s the glass but wish I could use some of my old T70 glass, that old 50 always took a good photo. Averaging a little over ten thousand photos per year now and always happy to find a new opportunity to pick up the camera to which my family has responded by calling me Papa – “ratzzi.” Nothing is sacred. Hence this first post in this forum of POTN. I would enjoy going to Calgary for the photo opportunities and to meet fellow POTN’ers also the Bow River or any river with trout is a big draw for me. In addition to the camera I’m addicted to fly fishing. My preference is for a warmer weather time frame for any “Clave” in the Calgary area I’m fairly sure my calendar will have an opening set aside.

It sure is Bryan, I like to go there to practise things, see what works best. In the spring the butterfly cage will likely have lots of residents. When I went there last month there were very few butterflies there but some of the animals who like winter were way more active than you see in summer.

I'm game for the zoo! (the wife and munchkin are too)
Come spring time, Bowness park can be photogenic. There is always ducks, baby ducks, geese etc. Plus its on the Bow river for FLYWING

I think a spring BBQ is in order!!

The weir on the bow river is always a great place for birds in the spring.

Hello,
My name is Elfie and I live about 2 hours southeast of Calgary, in the Little Bow area. We are about 1 hour northwest of Lethbridge.
I started taking pictures about 30 years ago, mostly family pictures. About 4 years ago I got my first little Canon S500, started taking Photography classes at SAIT.
Now, in retirement, I am having a lot of fun taking pictures of wildlife.

I would be interested in joining you guys for some shooting in the Lethbridge area.

I'm thinking someone has to set a date, time and place then let everyone know. If people could make it that would be great, if they can't then maybe next time. I am so incredibly busy with my business that I would only be able to commit nearer the chosen time but would sure make the effort to make it work.

calgaryphotographer
19th of March 2007 (Mon), 21:53
I don't like big choices..anybody else want to pick a date?

davidm_86
19th of March 2007 (Mon), 22:36
Alright, well to sum it up:

Me = April to when the snow falls, except May 10-14th, I'm busy.
BearLeeAlive = April until mid May
Tangledlines = April
Geoff_Shawcross = May, June, July.

So I think right now, late April or May sounds the safest. So if it's May, I'd say the weekends of either:

May 6-8
May 18-20
May 25-27

How do those sound?

From what I've read, the zoo would be a popular choice. So that's one day. Other places in the city could include along Memorial Drive (when the sun is starting to set, it's pretty nice) and Fish Creek Park can be a nice walk.

Banff would be sweet, bit of a drive, but it would be sweet.

So there, not really a decision, but at least it's a start in narrowing down a solid date.

BearLeeAlive
19th of March 2007 (Mon), 22:56
May 18-21 is the long weekend so that one would be out.

The zoo is great, I go there all the time.

I've never gone shooting in Fish Creek Park but would welcome the chance.

Banff is nice, here is a shot from early morning yesterday as the sun broke through the clouds near Banff, just to tease you all a bit;)

May 18-21 is the long weekend so that one would be out.

Oh right, good call. Alright, weather wise the later the better (usually) so how about:

May 25-27?

Geoff_Shawcross
20th of March 2007 (Tue), 18:32
Sounds good to me.....May 25-27 that is. I'll still have to check that I can get those days off work, but I don't think that will be to much of a problem. Once I know, I'll post here. The more the merrier. :)

If it ends up that everyone is okay with these dates, then all we will need to do is finalize where to go for those days. I for one like the idea of the Calgary zoo as one of the places to go. I've been there a few times and find that there are many photo oportunities.

BearLeeAlive

I'm out the May long and the weekend of the 26-27 (it's an annual event). Anytime up to those weekends and the first couple weekends in June would work. But don't sweat it, we won't be able to fit into everyone's schedule.

Geoff_Shawcross
20th of March 2007 (Tue), 19:00
For me the date doesn't really matter, as long as it's May or later. Late may or any time in June preferably though I guess.

I guess this is really the toughest part.......working out when people can go.

davidm_86
21st of March 2007 (Wed), 12:03
OK. Well, how about the first weekend in June? I could likely do that. Maybe not the Friday, depends on work. (Which is why I picked end of May because it's usually quiet at the ends of the month.) But the Sat, Sun would be fine.

Jun 1-3?

I say everyone who's interested just post the weekends they can/can't go (whichever list is shorter :)) and we'll go from there. And as already mentioned by Geoff_Shawcross, once we have a solid date (and one or two backup date(s) just incase the weather turns bad) then we can decide on places.

BearLeeAlive
21st of March 2007 (Wed), 14:19
At this point of time I have nothing on for the weekend of June 2-3 and would make it work.

Maybe we could meet at the zoo early on Saturday as that is usually the least crowded time, then either head somewhere else for later or even do something else on Sunday. Although I love going to the zoo, I do it all the time so would like to try something new.

Seems the zoo has been the most popular venue. It opens at 9:00 so could meet June 2 either there or for breakfast, or a coffee, ahead of time if this is where we decide to go. We could spend 3-4 hrs there then maybe go to another spot. I am likely headed there this Saturday.

Any more thoughts, wishes or desires on going to the zoo and/or other places and times to go there.

I, for one would like to go somewhere I have never been, at least not with camera in hand.

Had a blast shooting at the zoo on Saturday but boy did it ever get busy. It might be tough to do a group thing with, especially if the weather gets even better. We could still make it work, we would just have to exercise patience. Would a Friday work for everyone, I know that my boss(me) would give me a day off anytime I wanted.

Thoughts?

davidm_86
27th of March 2007 (Tue), 21:06
Well, the Friday would be tough for me personally just based on our release cycle of software. I might be able to swing it. But I wouldn't cancel the plans just because I *may* not make it. If everyone else can go, great. That leaves Sat/Sun open for more ideas... anyone?

Geoff_Shawcross
28th of March 2007 (Wed), 06:08
Not sure about friday would work to well either. There isn't a problem with taking friday off, but my shift on thursday doesn't finish until 2:30am (friday morning), and it's a 2.5 hour drive (or there abouts) up to Calgary for me. Thus, I wouldn't bee in Calgary until probably 2pm or 3pm friday afternoon.

For me, my normal days off are sunday and monday, and I plan on taking the friday and saturday off, thus potentially giving me part of friday, saturday, sunday and part of monday (June 1-4).

But, doesn't mean others couldn't go to the zoo (or where ever) earlier on in the day on friday, and the others can meet up with the rest later on at a given time, etc.

I would like to make it to the zoo though if possible. It's been a while since I last went there.

BearLeeAlive
28th of March 2007 (Wed), 10:18
We should stick to Saturday regardless what we do then. I was just reminded with the nice weather while there last Sunday the the zoo is... well, it's a zoo. ;)

As long as folk are patient with the hordes of families we could still make it work. If we were to try to stick together as a group I would imagine being there 4+ hours. Heck, even by myself going where I felt at my own pace, I am usually there for at least 4 hours. The butterfly/tropical cage usually holds me captive for at least an hour, the raptors for 30+ minutes, etc.

As most of my photo excursions take me into the mountains and far away from Calgary I do not really know of many places in, or near, town to take people though I am sure many others would know of great places.

We could also meet somewhere in town and carpool out to Kananaskis or Banff taking in a few different locations in the mountain.

Here's a couple teaser shots from the zoo last Sunday. Only PP done is to convert from RAW to JPEG for attachment purposes. Have yet to do the proper PP for the shots from the day. I actually had 473 images taken, quickly whittled down to about 200 for actual considerations. Both taken with the 100-400 at 400mm.

That carpool idea to Kananaskis or Banff sounds like a possibility. And in regards to the zoo, I could spend hours just in the indoor tropical areas as well as some of the outdoor areas......Don't think I've ventured over to the raptor area....hmm.

One question Jim. Do you usually take a monopod or tripod with you to the zoo when you do go, or do you do the shots hand held?...........Great pictures by the way. :)

Thanks Geoff. I always take my monopod and use it wherever I can and handhold the rest. I do plan on taking my tripod next time to do some shots on all the great plant life there. The old aluminum tripod I have is too cumbersome and heavy for most things. I will have to look into one a bit lighter. I do like this one (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=Search&A=details&Q=&sku=475937&is=REG&addedTroughType=search).

Sorry to jump in a little bit late with my $0.02...

I would definitly be game for the carpool to K-Country/Banff idea. I can also supply a vehicle and room for 3 passengers (4 if you are really comfortable with each other!).
Like Jim, my work schedule is busy and anything but scheduled, so it's a little tough for me to commit too far in advance. Only thing I can commit to is not being available on long weekends.

Geoff_Shawcross
28th of March 2007 (Wed), 16:19
Nice tripod......a bit out of my pirce range at the moment though.....hehe :)

I'll probably bring both my monopod and tripod with me in June and just leave one of them in my car unless I want to use it. My tripod is a bit on the heavy side. It's a Manfrotto 190CL with a Manfrotto 808RC4 head. Works well, but can get heavy if not prepared to haul it properly.

BearLeeAlive
28th of March 2007 (Wed), 17:13
Evan, just pencil in June 2 if you can and we will formulate a plan by then. I too could provide a vehicle, though I'm sure most could.

Anybody have ideas for places to go. There are a ton of places to go. We could do the car tripping, short hikes (or long ones). I years past (most of them long past) I have done tons of trips in to K-Country from car camping to multi-day excursions so have a few ideas there. Banff area has hordes of great short hikes with gorgeous scenery too.

Heck, we could through a few canoes on, pack up the tents and make are real expedition out of it. ;) Just Kidding (not really though)

June 2 it is for sure, mark it on your calender.

I would be willing to do a second day too if others were willing. We could do one day around Calgary, another either out west or another out of town location.

Though many liked the idea of the zoo, I really feel it will not be a great option for a group as big as we may be. Other options have come up too.

If you all would copy these list and add names and places to go in another post. We can the get a general consensus of where most would like to go. I think most are quite flexible. Doing this event is of primary concern, where we go to is secondary.

I just got prompted about this. I will say a tentative yes right now as I am in for knee surgery in May and depends on the outcome of this. I see someone has mentioned the Birds of Prey center in Coaldale. I have been doing some work with them each year. The manager of this has granted me access to all the birds here and will even take them out to a more natural looking setting. While he had not asked for anything in return I think a small donation to his place would be appropriate.

I fully plan on taking in the Birds of Prey Center this year. Sheldon, if you could arrange something for there I would be more than happy to contribute in an appropriate manner. There are some great photo op's in the Crowsnest area too. Elfie is the one who had suggested the BOPC and she lives between Calgary & Lethbridge and I bet would be in on a trip there.

I am thinking it would have to be a different weekend than the one planned as the focus would likely be in or close near Calgary one day and maybe head west for the second day for those wanting to go. Some many places to go....

It will be great to meet and get others ideas on approaching different things from a photographical point of view.

Careful Sheldon, first the back, now the knee. They've shot horses for less you know...lol.

I'd like to do a day at the Birds of Prey Center sometime this spring/summer. Give me a holler sometime when your going out and Ill arrange to be there. A contribution for the cause would be very appropriate in my opinion.

I suggest that since we are getting a good sized group, some sort of BBQ social type thing the Saturday evening? If we are in or near Calgary, I have a back yard and a BBQ. If we are out of town, find a camp site or something? Just a thought.

A back yard and BBQ are important, but the most important issue is, how well are you stocked with T-bones and beer? ;)

Sounds like a good idea though.

I guess we should figure out pretty soon what we want to do. Those of us that are from out of town, can book a motel and then figure out about the BBQ.

What do you think?

I say for Saturday we do something around town, maybe the morning at one place, the afternoon at another and then the evening eating Evan's food (J/K, would be glad to contribute). Sunday morning we could head for a road trip out of town somewhere, back late afternoon.

Hello Sheldon,

First of all, good luck with your knee surgery!

I am very interested in a trip to the BOPC - it has been on my list of places to visit. A donation would be no problem either.

Might be a useful idea. We don't want to be running all over Calgary or the country side trying to get everything in........it just won't work. We'll have to narrow it down to something that is feasable. Guess it would help if we figured out the initial meet-up time in the morning for Saturday (can always decide Sunday later). That would give a better idea as to how much time we have to do various things.

So ya, perhaps a poll or vote of some sort would help a bit.

If nothing esle it would give us a better idea about places to go.

I'm thinking that where we go is not real critical, meeting new folk and sharing of ideas (and fun) is the main idea, at least it is for me.

I suggested a while back that we consider a BBQ at Bowness park. Since it will have more photo ops than say a typical calgary backyard.

The only concern would be a portable BBQ. I don't own one, but I might be able to borrow one from a family member.

What areas of the Zoo would you guys and gals like to concentrate on?
I'm just trying to get a feeling as to what interests everyone.

I am partial to the aviary exhibits (owls in particular), the big cats, and the butterfly gardens.

BearLeeAlive
15th of May 2007 (Tue), 14:16
I'm thinking we may have to spread out a bit there, dependent upon the final numbers. The zoo will be busy as it is, and some spots will not likely hold all of us as well as the regular visitors. I like the avian raptors, butterflies, gorillas, bears, cats....Oh heck, I like 'em all. ;)

The afternoon trip will be a bit easier to do. We can then formulate a plan for where to go to on Sunday. I can come up with a few ideas in K country, as can others and we can decide by the end of Saturday. Weather may have an effect on our decision.

We should most definitely meet up well before 9:00 when the gates open so we can all get acquainted, maybe 8:30 or so. There will be less crowds then. I always go then and walk right in, a couple hours later the lineup will be a few hundred long.

If everyone were to PM me with contact information, especially a cell phone number, I would put together a list and PM it back to the others involved. It would be better than listing any information here.

I have a smokin' busy week this week and am leaving town early Friday to go canoeing on the N. Saskatchewan River, but upon my return I would be willing to make a plan for what to do about our evening soirée. Bowness Park was mentioned, but am wondering if having in a back yard might be logistically easier.

elfieh
16th of May 2007 (Wed), 01:40
I think it is a good idea to meet earlier before the crowds come.
It would be nice if we had some POTN identifier - maybe we should change our avatars to photos of ourselves?
My favorite areas at the zoo are the wolves pen, raptores and like Jim says - I like them all too!
Let's hope for some good weather!

Looking forward...

What the heck you doing up at 4:00AM Geoff, I thought that was just me who kept the crazy hours.

We should most definitely meet at the main/north gates, there is another one but much smaller. If folk just exit off Memorial Drive following the parking signs it is real easy to get to for those not too familiar, just leave yourself lots of time.

I will come up with an identifier for myself and be there at 8:00. Being 6'-0", 210 lbs and a clean shaven head will make me stand out anyway. ;)

At 8:00 a.m., I think there would not be a lot of people there - especially carrying CANON equipment.
One thing, don't keep any valuable stuff in your car - like lenses or cameras or whatever - last time I was at the Zoo (last Nov.) - somebody tried to break into my car. They totally wrecked the lock but did not get into it .

Also, they rent little wagons at the Zoo, I think for $10 - I am bringing my 300 f2.8 (heavy...) plus other equipment and tripod etc., so I am thinking of getting one.

Am I the only female? My husband is coming too - so there will be a couple with Canon equipment.

Pretty soon....

Yes, I am bringing my tripod. I am trying to get a really nice picture of the wolves.

I found a very good piece of equipment at Costco in Lethbridge. It is a Columbia cooler, soft sides, holding 60 cans of beer, on wheels and a retractable handle. It holds all the photo equipment that I am bringing and is very easy to manoever. It only costs $38.
