I ordered my first L glass today, 100-400 IS

I should have this on Friday, with time to play with it before I run off for a long weekend in Yosemite next Thursday! I don't know how I'll sleep 'til then!

I'd say more like an Lcaholic. A whore might be a little extreme, I recon. You can when you get it join the club. I have a 16-35 F2.8L lens and a 24-70 F2.8L on order. I don't consider myself a whore, though. I do it fot the fun factor and yes it is incredibly expensive, but it is only money and if you have the money to spend and can afford it why not?

Cheers from England,
Canuck

Canuck:

---The ONLY reason I even have the cash, is cuz I drove out to my current project location (then home for Christmas break, and back out). I get milage from my company, and since my truck is spankin' new, I don't need to put that money into the truck....

I have just enough for either a 1.4 TC or some type of digital wallet? Can't make up my mind yet?

That I shall, but it will be some time...it can take some time to get over here. I have no doubt it is an awesome lens, it is an L lens.

Oh, they're both so sweet. Tough decision.

Question: How often do you fill your CF cards on an outing? I got by for a while because I didn't have a portable storage thingee. But I now have an X's Drive II and I feel a whole lot better, just in case I've needed it. And it can be nice to be able to "blast away" at some action scene, rather than attempting to take the perfect picture at the absolute correct moment in time. Yeah, I know, but practice sessions can be very nice with a portable drive, since you get to keep them all and compare at home.

As to the TC, it's works pretty well on the 100-400. You lose AF, but it still produces a good picture. Check here (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=26003) for some pictures of a hawk I took. 100-400 L IS with and without the 1.4 TC.

Well, lately I've been filling 2 512 cards before mid day, when I've go out at dawn shooting deer, etc. along the river here. But I can be close enough to my laptop in the truck to empty it there.

Next week for instance, I'll be off in Yosemite all day, and taking the laptop there will not be practical :( Nor will it be easy while reking through England, Scotland, and Germany & castles later this year.

I'm looking at a 30Gb sized one minimally?

By the way, Nice hawk!, wish I was closer when I came across this eagle in Wyoming:

IMHO you don't have a choice. It's time for a portable drive. From the sounds of it you could really use it. You'll just have to depend on luck & skill & such to get by without the 1.4.

Both would have been nice.

I'm looking at a 30Gb sized one minimally?

I got an empty X's Drive II for $90, and put in a 30GB laptop drive that I had. 30 Gig is ~4700 pictures at RAW + Small. That's a LOT of shooting.

But I wish the X's Drive had verification and some shock absorbtion ability, just to keep me feeling better. I don't completely trust the X's Drive since it doesn't have these features. But I had to go cheap at the time, and $90 was a lot cheaper than $400. When I can do it I'll be getting the $400 model.

"2 x 512 by midday" comes to 2-3 gig per day. 30 minimally for 2 weeks, I'd feel better with 60. But I personally would bring the laptop and leave it at the hotel, and copy everything to it daily. Therefore I'd get the 30, or even a 20 if it's cheaper.

By the way, Nice hawk!

Thanks.

No question about it... you need the digital wallet. Trust me, you can easily fill those 2-512MB cards in Yosemite in a matter of a couple of hours. There is just so much there that you're constantly snapping shots.

I went to Focus on Photography last weekend, lots of stalls, loads of photographers, lots of interesting stuff. Only problem was THAT lens was there, you know the one, the one that you have been thinking about for months, the one that you have handled on the canon stand, the one they dont make any more and you never see it on the second hand lists (and boy have you looked). Wife says "I'm not saying anything, it's up to you", the store owner lifts it gently from the case, pops it onto an EOS3 so you can enjoy the full framedness of it. He hands it to me and before I even look through it I hand it to my wife and say "Go play". After five minutes I am able to prise it from her fingers and she has that glazed look, at this point the only question is which organ am I going to have to sell. I finally get to look through it and its wonderful, fast focus, shallow dof, remember to hold both the camera and the lens or just the lens, never just the camera. I pop it off the camera, hold it to the light checking for scratches and dirt, seems ok, few chips on the paintwork but nothing serious. I look at the man, he says a number, I grin, my wifes glazed look is starting to fade, I reach for my card before it vanishes, he reaches for the metal carry case, a short scribble and its mine

Time to take it home to meet its brothers and sisters, our new baby is called EF 200mm f1.8, not the catchiest of names but a welcome addition, now we just need to get used to eating bread and water

best regards

....... now we just need to get used to eating bread and water

At least you get bread!
If I want protien or nutrition beyond water, I have to screen the overflowing and high rivers I shoot wildlife at.... seeking left-behinds from the deer...

Congratulations on the new baby!
