Hello,
I have been approached to take a soccer team photo - well actually a photo of 9 junior teams as a single image, consisting of around 150 bodies ranging in age from 6yrs to 17yrs. It is the club's 30th anniversary this year, hence the requirement.

Not too sure if I have the kit to do this and if I do, what approach to take.

Is this too large a group? What hardware would me most appropriate in terms of lenses if indeed you think this is a go-er. I struggle with a group of 15 lads - getting them in the right size order... front row, back row type of stuff.... what on earth is 150 of them going to be like?

Any experience out there? (I'm sure there is). I have a 1DMkII which is fine for the soccer field itself but maybe limited for large group photography. Lenses - apart from a long prime and a couple of longish telephotos, I have a 17-40mm L and a 28-70mm Tamron.

Thanks in advance,
Alan

I would rent, beg, borrow, or steal a 6x9 medium format camera with a wide(ish) lens. Then when you crop it you still have enogh detail inn the neg to make a big print for the club. Oh, and get a whistle to get them all looking in your direction at the same time.

I shoot big groups all the time.

Its actually very easy if you are organised. Firstly the comment about the 6x9 camera is completely wrong. I shoot 20" prints with a 6mp camera and 40" ones with a 13mp.

Simple ways to get a clear view of everyone is to either use steps or a cherry picker. Failing that we have staging you can hire.

Once you have people in place shoot quickly. Use a whistle to get peoples attention, and count them in and most people will look. Do shoot several frames to have some heads to copy and paste.

Forget the Tamron.

Mail me if you want more detailed help.
