It looks as though I've managed (by default) to get myself subscribed to over 1,000 threads.
How can I remove my subscription from all these threads and get myself into a position where I can only subscribe to the threads that I want to subscribe to?

I started to use the subscribed threads a few weeks ago and I’m happy with them so far.
To delete the subscribed threads, go to UserCP, click View all Subscribed Threads at right, check the first check box to check all or the individual check boxes for each thread and finally in the ‘Selected Threads’ dropdown box at bottom right select delete and click GO.
If you have a lot of subscriptions you can manage them with folders, but I have not used that feature yet because I have no more than 20 threads simultaneously subscribed.
I do not use e-mail notification either, just the User CP Suscribed Threads page to list them.
Edit:
You may want to check in User CP > Edit Options your Default Thread Subscription Mode. Mine is set to ‘Do not subscribe’ to manually subscribe to the threads I am interested in.

I use folders.
I have
"participation" threads (weekly projects, game threads, etc)
"My" threads (Threads I started)
"Interesting" threads (threads that I want to keep an eye on for whatever purposes)
Go to 'subscribed threads'
Click "edit folders" to create folders.
at the bottom of that page, there is a drop down menu, with the option to 'move to folder' . Checkmark a thread, then click that option, and move it to a folder that you have created.
Other than that... rafael's post answers your other questions. :)

Thanks guys for that. I think I was a bit thrown by the default "no email notification", didn't see that another option was not to subscribe to threads.
I'm all sorted out now, after having to remove a huge amount of posts.
