I have a Canon A70 still camera that does take video clips. My problem is that I can download the clips to my computer and play them but when I want to edit or convert them nothing recognizes them.
I have tried Premiere, Vegas, TMPG, Cleaner and they all say they cannot recognize the file format.
What am I missing? Could some please explain to me what I need to do to be able to edit and convert these files?

Try http://www.virtualdub.org/
Don't know about converting, since I haven't used it that much, but you can use it for editing the most common videoformats...

Why not install Arc Soft Video Impression that comes with the software supplied with the A 70. It's not really intuitive, but with a little patience, and a little hit and miss, it should work.

How did you download the video to the computer?
I tried by following the same procedure as dl'ing photos and it was no go.
What do I need to do to get this going in the right direcction?

Use either Zoombrowser, just like with pictures, or use a cardreader, and simply copy the file to the computer

I too like to edit my videos. The problem is that the Canon frame rate (20 fps) is not recognizable by video editing programs. This is a relatively simple thing to fix. After transferring the avi file to your computer, use a program like Stoik Video converter (free to download) to change your avi file's frame rate to say, 24 fps. My video editing program (I use a cheap program called Magix Video Deluxe) can then recognize the file.
Stoik's URL is: http://www.stoik.com/products/morphman/mm30_svc.htm
