View Full Version : Titles for Long-time Members with low post counts

After seeing this thread, http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=231702, it seems that there should be an honorary title for those of us who are long-time active members with relatively low post counts. Here I am a regular visitor for almost 4 years with not even 600 posts, while new members attain that in their first 3 hours on the board.

Something like "Keyboard Challenged" or "Doesn't know "Sh** from Shinola" would be suitable After all, we help save Pekka's bandwidth and don't post those annoying threads like "Wooooeee, guess what brown just did for me" or reply "great shot" to every pedestrian snapshot just to inflate post count.

On the other hand, I guess this post wastes Pekka's band width, and that guy who received the new camera from UPS might really be excited about something he/she'd looked forward to, so us slackers may just need to get cracking.

I'm shooting for 700 posts without mercy by the end of 2007!

i really resent that the comment "great shot" keeps getting canned. If i don't really know the poster, or my knowledge on the subject is limited, i am not going to spout off stuff for the fun of it, and if it is a great shot, i'll say so. Sometimes i only say nice shot, or lovely shot. It is really nice to get feedback on photos, and sometimes i only get a nice shot, etc, but that means it meant enough for someone to respond to my photo. It has nothing to do with post count. Acknowledging a photo is a nice thing to do.

10,672 posts as of now. 21.41 posts per day.

Personally, I think that if you spend an hour or so on here (I spend a couple per day, however not continuous), it's not difficult at all to post at least a good dozen or more times. I just type faster, I guess.

re: "Nice shot." I see nothing wrong with it. If a friend shows you a group of snapshots from his/her last vacation, somewhere during that exchange, you're going to say, "Nice shot." If nothing else, it's just common courtesy.

I had a Similar Thought, on THIS THREAD (http://www.photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=143928). My idea was the option of an increased Avatar Size to reflect "duration of membership", which I think should be recognized*. Nothing was ever done at that time. Perhaps now, your idea would be more implementable.

Regarding the original suggestion raised by the OP.......

Perhaps this is a good idea, but I don't think we can recognize purely longevity either. Coming up with a formula would be tricky, and would no doubt require tracking a member's participation over the entire term of their membership. Beyond total number of posts, and date of last post, I don't know that we have that capability. We have lots of members going all the way back to 2001. Many of them have very low posting numbers, but unless they log on, there's no way to know if they're even still alive.

Perhaps what we really need to do is come up with a new class of member......'Presumed Dead.'

i really resent that the comment "great shot" keeps getting canned.Tina and others,

I apologize if you took offense to this casual use of that phrase. I was writing the original post kind of tongue in cheek and just kind of threw that out there. No negative was intended, simply an illustration of post count bloaters.

Of course we've all said "great shot" at certain times. I've posted that once or twice when someone has put up an image which they're very proud of, but after many, many views, there's been no response. Not being the greatest photographer in the world (nor probably on my street), I can understand wanting to encourage folks, but I guess to me, it would have so much more value if there were more said than that.

Its obviously probably a good thing I haven't posted as much as others, otherwise a few more poorly chosen words here and there would have gotten me "run out of town".

I was kidding about recognition and really don't need a special title for a reward. Reading the posts of all the knowledgable folks on this board is its own reward.

I wouldn't want that, because it would make me feel lonely and miserable.

I would say I read for about 20 minutes per post. At 1,335 posts that means I have dedicated about 26,700 minutes of my life to this forum since I joined.

That's 445 hours. If I flipped burgers for $10 an hour, I would be $4,450 richer!

Okay, following your line of reasoning....

13,900 posts.
Average more like 2 minute per post = 27,800 minutes. (I don't think nearly as much as you when I'm posting)
27,800 minutes = 463.33 hours.
I'm retired, so my time is worth nothing. Therefore, I've lost nothing, but gained freindships (worth far more than money or titles).

Not logical? He's trying to ascertain how much time he spends on these forums. The only indicator is his post cost - so he assumes that, while browsing the forums, he posts every 20 minutes - therefore to estimate the total time spent on forums, he multiplies his post count by 20. Your method of looking at the actual time posting comments neglects to look at the time actually spent browsing the forums. That is, unless, you read no posts and just comment - which seems fairly unlikely.

Yes, the principal of your statement stands, but I was fairly logical.

i apologize if i seem to have gone a bit off the deep end, but in the last few weeks there have been comments made about how inadequate, or whatever, a response of "nice shot" is, and i guess i just wanted to have my say. After i posted, i realised it sounded a bit severe, but i left it anyway. I always look at a person's photography rather than post count as a means of judging their skills. One can usually tell if a "cream of the crop" is a genuine photographer/poster, as opposed to someone just chatting in the chat threads or whaever.

i agree, this forum is the best there is, but it also due to the moderators, who quickly remove any very unfriendly stuff, and rap offenders over the knuckles. Disagreements can be healthy, make us think a little of what the other is trying to say.

Belmondo doesn't need to read posts, he just sense their 'ora' and replies in tongues. He then has a custom script that converts it back into English. It's pretty wild to see it happen.

So his logic of 2 minutes per post is about right.

But yeah I do a lot more lurking then posting, which is sad to say since I have over 1,300 posts!

I felt myself uncomfortable after seen my post quoted to support feelings that are not mine. Hope it was a joke, but I think it went too far.
I decided to remove the image from my web site. Apologies to all, specially to belmondo

No offense taken. I'm not very thin-skinned, and didn't mind your edit of my avatar at all.;)

One usually doesn't make it to 14,000+ posts without being thick-skinned.. especially here :)

[quote=dicky109;2517014]After seeing this thread, http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=231702, it seems that there should be an honorary title for those of us who are long-time active members with relatively low post counts. Here I am a regular visitor for almost 4 years with not even 600 posts, while new members attain that in their first 3 hours on the board.

I'm a fairly new member and have only posted 31 times in 3 months so I've still got a long way to go too.

Hmph!

don't post those annoying threads like "great shot" to every pedestrian snapshot just to inflate post count.

Great thread!

As long as I learn from being here, I really don't care about how many posts I contribute to, as long as my contributions make sense.

I just don't like having a Gold Member...Well, my title of "Senior Member" sort of implies wisdom and/or maturity, of which I have, respectively, very little and even less.

Though I wouldnt want to have a Gold Member either.:D

Well, senior member and gold member have to be better than JUNIOR MEMBER!!!

I must admit, i have learned an enormous amount about photography from this forum, and i believe that's the point of it... not what your title says

I want 'Pan Master' - referring to my against-the-grain appreciation of panning, usually with stupidly slow shutter speeds (with non IS lenses) in the Motorsport forum :( everyone calls me the Pan Master anyway

How about a title for the highest "Last Post Count" on a thread.
"Thread Buster" or "Topic Killer"
You could do this by percentage instead of post count.
Mmmm, maybe not.
