I'm going to buy a digital camera in next couple of weeks and I've narrowed my options to 2 cameras now. Can't decide whether I'll go for Canon Powershot S50 or Canon Ixus 400. Looks doesn't really matter to me and my main aim is to go for the best picture quality. I'm going to buy one from Hong Kong as I'm going there in two weeks time and the price difference is only £20! I mean Ixus400 is cheaper.
I am an IT professional so I want a camera which has got some sort of advanced features too!

If you like to occasionally have more control over your exposures, then the S-50 would be the choice.
On the other hand, if you want something that is about the size of a pack of cigarettes (and much safer), the S-400 is it.
I have the 400 and I'm happy with it, but if I didn't have an SLR or two, I would have gotten something with more manual capability.

You cannot go wrong with either camera. There is absolutely no excuse not to carry the S400/S410/S500 with you aywhere you go. It is a point and shoot that's versatile, light and small.
The S50 has a lot of advanced features such as shutter and aperture priority. It is an inch longer and 4 ounces heavier.

The S400 is a fully automatic camera, while the S50 has manual controls of aperture and shutter speed, exposure mode, flash compensation etc. The S50 also support the RAW format, which allows easier post processing. You should definitely get the S50 if you don't mind the size.

Last night I was going through an old digital camera buyer magazine and they had a lot of praise for Canon G3. But I doubt it I can buy it from shops anymore because no one on internet is selling it anymore. I don't want to buy a second hand though.
Is Powershot S50 as good as G3 if not what's the difference?
Thanks to everyone who's replied to my previous questions!

You can't buy a new G3 but you can buy a new G5! The G5 is a newer, 5MP version of the G3.
No the S50 is not as good as G3 in terms of features and image quality. The G3 has a high-quality 4x zoom lens with fast F2.0 aperture. You can attach external flashes and convetor lenses to expand its abilities. By the way it offers even more manual controls than the S50.
It really depends on whether you want features and image quality, or size and convenience.

Oh I forgot to mention the flip-out LCD of the G3/G5, it is extremely useful. By the way, have you considered the A80? It has manual controls and it is a bargain.
