Hey folks. I recently bought a G7 as a carry around camera, just out of curiosity does anyone know if the 550EX will work dedicated on it?
I could not find a mention of the 550ex or the 380ex in the manual.
Maybe because they are older flashes!
Thanks.

I asked something similar about the 420EX.
Although the 420EX is not listed because it is discontinued, Toogy reported it works fine.
I do not know for sure if the 550EX will work, but it is similar to the 580EX and I guess it should work.
Check the thread Flash for G7 (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=241245), mainly this post by BNF (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showpost.php?p=2284850&postcount=7) and this post by Toogy (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showpost.php?p=2293581&postcount=8)

the 550EX is designed to work with all ETTL and ETTL2 compatible cameras, so yeah, it should work (it'll look kinda funny though :D)

Thanks Rafael . I was just curious and thought there may be some reason canon did not list it in the user manual. I will give it a try out.
Thanks Leo and I agree it will look quite strange having a flash bigger than the camera. It normally sits on my 20D. Just want to give it a go on the G7 to see the results.
Its a bit of a test I am doing. To do a photo shoot with the G7 and submit it to one of the mags I do work for. Just to see if they notice anything. With the results I have seen so far with only a few test shots, used the right way this camera is a GEM.
Thanks again.
Tony.

It looks crazy. Dont know what is heavier the camera or flash. It works all ok though.

Hah! That's a funny sight, but a great combo.. I'm sure you'll get plenty of good shots.

I have a G7 and a 580EX and two 430EXs. Before I bought the G7, I took my 580 to the camera store and put it on G7 just to see how they would balance. My opinion is that they don't balance well, but it is a usable combination. I just put my left index finger up alongside the flash for a little more stability. Keeps the flash (which makes the camera top heavy) from tilting down so much.

Hey Mark.
Its a tricky combination to use balance wise, but I agree that it is a workable combination and a real handy carry around camera when you dont want to lug the SLR stuff around.

Flash shutter release delay with the 550EX has been the sole disappointment for me. While registering the G7 for its warranty, I took the opportunity to ask whether a firmware fix is on the way. Sorry and no are the gist of their response. If you, too, are less than pleased, perhaps a chorus will get Canon's attention. Yours, Cameron
