I need an every day lens that will give me the best possible images for my 10D. I want to get the best opics I can for under $400.00.
The lenses I have now are 24 f/2.8, 50 f/1.4, 70-200 f/4.0 L So the zoom range needs to cover 28-70. Hope to hear from those of you that use these zooms with digital. What I am replacing is my 28- 90 f/4.5 kit lens that is not cutting it with my 10D.

I would cast my vote for the 28-135 IS, but that is a little over your target price. It is a fine piece of glass. My only comment about being an everyday lens is that, with the crop factor, it is not wide enough at 28mm.

I am using a canon 24-85mm USM f3.5-f4.5 covers your range. Cost $350.. I think you can beat that price as I got it locally. I love it!

Well the three I was thinking about were the; 24-85 f/3.5-4.5, 28-105 f/3.5 and the 28-135 IS. But the range doesnt matter as much as the optics. I want the sharpest image I can get from the three. I have a prime at the low end and the 70-200 f/4.0 L at the upper end but am finding that at times changing lenses on the fly is not an option.

This is way over the top and $1500 more than the $400 you want to spend, but I found the Sigma 120-300 F2.8EX gets a lot of use. That is the answer to 1/2 your question and I will leave it at that.

(I believe that someone has one for sale in the marketplace forum, with hood).
I use the 50 quite a bit as well - more that I thought I would.
Edit: I'd probably vote for the 28-135 IS as well, but I don't have one and it isn't worth it for me to change since I'm pretty satisfied with what I have in that range.

I need a lot of range in focal length, so I use my Canon 28-200mm most of the time.

I concur with all those who recommended the 28-135, but that wouldn't be the truthful answer to your question since I no longer own one.
The non-L lens I use the most is the 50mm f/1.4.

28-135 USM IS lens is a great all purpose lens. I picked mine up at www.bhphotovideo.com for $399 They are one of the few reputable NYC based camera places. I got my 10D and this lens from them w/out any problems and other people I know have had no problems from them either. Their prices appear to be equal and in some cases (like this lens) cheaper. I've had it for a few weeks and have been very happy with it. I agree, not the best for wide angle shots. I've read people having problems w/ the AF speeds, but I think they just had a bad lens or lack of understanding of how to use; mine has been very fast and accurate.
Peace :D

i use the 28-235IS the most too. if you can swing it, get it. if not the
24-85 f/3.5-4.5 is a fine lens. i've got some friends using the tamron
28-75di, and they like it. it's f/2.8, and goes for about $325USD.

I'll throw in another vote for the 28-105 f/3.5-4.5 USM.
It's a dandy lens, that's highly underrated. I use it quite a bit and I'm happy with the results (otherwise I would have ditched it a long time ago).
I don't see much need for IS at under 100mm.. I've never wished I had it..
For shooting over 100mm, I go 'L' :)

My 50 f/1.4 is the most versatile -- but I always try to find an excuse to use my 85 f/1.8.
If I'm traveling light without zooms, I bring along both primes. They're small, unobtrusive, and the best I have for available light photography.

I would seriously recommend the 28-105. :D
It's extremely similar to the 28-135 in sharpness but way cheaper.I keep mine ready on the 300D all the time (this from a prime lens addict)
Another serious option may be the tamron 28-75 /2.8 XR (i'm just not sure of the price)?
From the example pic someone posted on this forum it is fantastic-VERY close to the EF24-70/2.8 L for sharpness, clarity, contrast, colour, etc

Hi Dennykyser,
Tho I don't own it anymore I would go for the 28-105 f3.5-4.5 MkII, it is one of the best consumer zooms, DO NOT mix this up with the 28-105 f4-5.6 which is a P.O.S. My wife had the 28-135 IS and was very happy with it so it rather depends on how much you need IS. You should also check and see if the on camera flash sits high enough as the 28-135 has a large front optic which tends to cause shaddowing issues when used with the onboard flash. Not sure if this is an issue with the 10D but it did cause a few problems on some cameras. I would still have my 25-105 now if I hadn't replaced the range it covered with with gLass.
Best Regards

I have the Drebel with the kit lens as well as the 28-135 IS. I have not done any side-by-side tests, but the range alone, on the long end, makes it worthwile for me. The kit lens is much smaller, so it is more balanced on the camera than the 28-135, but the 28-135 is not objectionable in that regard as much as, say the 24-70 2.8 'L'. The IS is an obvious advantage over the kit lens. The 28-135 does have a 72mm filter size, so if you don't have any lenses this size, a new set of filters is in order (UV & polarizer for me).

Make sure you take a good look at the Tamron 28-75 F/2.8 XR Di.
I find mine as sharp or better than the Cannon 50 F/1.8. Cost at BH is $319.95. You'll even have enough money left for a really good polarizer.

I would go for the Tamron 28-75/2,8
It is the lens that i have mounted almost everyday on my D60, sometimes i have the Sigma 15-30 for more wide angle shots.
Both lenses are great and sharp.

Another vote for the 28-135 IS, which is not only a great range of focal length but the IS is excellent for low light shots where you can't (or don't want to) use flash or a tripod.
If you can't stretch to that one, I used the 28-105mm f3.5-4.5 for years with good results.

Well I got my lens but went against the title of this post and got the 17-40 f/4L I figured for the diferance in $ I should go with it and fill the large gap I have in that low end. since I do have the great 50 f/1.4 and the 70-200 f/4L I now pretty much have from 17-200 covered and although the 17-40 may be a little slow I have my 24 f/2.8 for those times I need the speed. Time will tell if I need the 24-70?
Thanks for everyones help on this and I appreciate the tips.

Now that I (also) have the 17-40L that is looking to very quickly take the 28-135's spot as my main lens. But, the 28-135 will definitely stay in my cache of glass.
Good choice.

Wow, that Tamron 28-75mm lens really looks like a gem!
I've read nothing but good reviews, and the price is very good.
Curious, does it have full time manual focus, and does the front of the barrel rotate when focusing? I can't seem to find that info anywhere.

My el-cheapo "most used" lens is the 28-105/3.5-4.5. It's much cheaper than the 28-135, much smaller, has a 58mm filter size, focuses faster and has a larger aperture than the 28-135. The 28-135 is nice with the IS and all, but I find it really too slow (both AF speed and aperture wise). I need to stop down to f/8 to get a really sharp pic on that lens.
