I am so sick of taking pictures of people and groups of people in clubs or bars with decent lighting with my 50 1.8 and after I take the camera down drunk people yelling at me "THE FLASH!!!" Then I try to explain that Im not using a flash and they try to tell me that I don't know what im doing and that I need to re take the picture. Some people get all huffy puffy about the whole situation until they see the picture then they say "wowwww your goooood!"

Well, you could quit taking pictures of drunk people.

No way, its too much fun.

Club pictures as well as nature and architecture are so great, I just love the colors.

Maybe I expressed this too much as a problem, its funny sometimes.

Im sure if I said that the flash DID go off and they did not see it because "insert witty comment here" they would believe me 90% of the time. hehe

You could tell them you are using special night vision equipment. In a way, that's what f/1.8 and ISO 1600 is, isn't it?

In a sense yes. Sometimes even 3200

Just tell them the flash did go off and they're too drunk to see it.

Take that opportunity to pull out your 550ex on full power and blind them with it ;)

hehe.... I like both of the last 2 answers.

1/1 on my 550ex would make someone blind for hours. LOL

How about setting FEC -2? The flash will fire but it won't contribute much to the overall exposure. OTOH, this might cause a problem if the ambient light is tungsten.

Not a bad idea but I usually snap off 3 or 4 at a time. when the flash goes off people move.

Infra-Red flash.. Not visible to the naked eye. Can only get it at stores that sell "Spy" gear, and they only sell to Spys :)

Well, if they are drunk . . .

"My camera uses the most advanced technology with larger apertures and ultra fast shutter speeds. The low light abilities of this particular lens allows me to capture the available light in the room and transfer it onto the 8 mega pixel sensor built exclusively by Canon for just this purpose. When set to the correct settings, this camera can capture a moment in time so accurately in the dark, even a grain of rice can be blown up to fantastic detail . . . . "

If they don't fall asleep, walk away, or look at it blankly, you might get punched in the face, but you never know. ;)

I suppose you can walk around with the flash mounted on the camera and have the AF assist light on. When they tell you that the flash didn't fire, tell them it's a new kind of technology.

I usually get that when shooting bands.. people for some reason want to get their picture taken when they're drunk. I just point at them and test fire the flash.. if they want to see the pictures I tell them they can pick up my business card at the bar and see them online. Of course they can't, but it gets them out of my hair. :)

You can do this with a Speedlite and a 20D or higher end body - there is a custom function to fire AF Assist but inhibit the main flash. The benefit is that you get the AF Assist to help your camera focus in low light but you will still expose for the available light. I use an ST-E2 for AF Assist shooting in low light.. the transmitter has the red LED, but no white-light flash of its own (it fires remote flashes)

"The red light is the special flash, you dummy"

But I liked the film comment better!
