I am going through the process of putting a quote together and this is in the brief:

Images would be the property of COMPANY UNNAMED and would need to be appropriate for use for at least 3-5 years.

Usage is on the Web and Print media of quite large proportions - Does this phrase outline that they want ownership of the images for good or just 5 years in total?

Also does this mean I then don't have copyright over my own work?

Thanks

Michael

Yes, and it's standard practice for most large corps. our biggest client is the L'oreal group and the contractually own all images we produce for them as we are contracted to relinquish all ownership... it's the cost of doing business with them.

Of course you don't.

This is work for hire and they own it exactly like they would own a widget that you made in their factory. You might want to add a line which indicates that you retain the right to use these images for your self promotion or even that may be denied.

Now if you had made the image previously and they just wanted to buy it then the rights remain with you unless you re-assign them.

At the end of the day you'll have to decide whether you want their business. It's fine to stand on principle but that doesn't pay the mortgage; and there is someone out there, every bit as talented as you are, who will grant that company those rights without blinking.

Thanks for the replies - just really wanted to know where it left me standing as I am now taking on larger scale jobs whilst still working 4 days a week in I.T.

Basically I am pushing my self more and more towards my main goal and want to see which angle of phtography I not only prefer but what I am good at, I have pushed myself on many techniques in both camera and photoshop but this year am striving towards self development in business practices and portraiture (hopefully).
