How do you guys like this lens. I dont hear much about it and was wondering if it gets much use? Any drawbacks to it. Seems it would be a good choice for the 1.6 Crop on the 10D

I have not used it a lot, but... Very nice lens, extremely well built, fast AF. Funny, I find it a very good balance on the 10D (no BigEd), which makes it very easy to use. So far the pictures have been quite nice, but I haven't really stressed it yet.
17 x 1.6 = 27.2, so somewhat wide angle. Certainly better than the 28-90 I had as a first lens. :)
While I could imagine times when I'd want wider, this will certainly do.

I just purchased this lens and love it. I don't have the need for the twice-the-price 16-35 and from the reviews I read this lens is on equal par with the 16-35 and even beats it out at the 35 mark. The 16-35 does outdo the 17-40 wide-open, but that's to be expected for the price you pay for it.
However, I spent four days at the Oregon coast this weekend and shot exclusively with this lens the entire weekend. I have a feeling this will beat out the 28-135 as my new walkaround lens.
And I'll love the extra WA I'll get when I get the 1D MKII.
The lens is everything you'd expect in an L-class lens. Perfect build quality, silent AF, butter-smooth zoom operation, crisp, contrasty, color-rich photos.
I'll post a couple over the weekend...
If you don't need the 2.8, then the 17-40 is the winner. I also considered the Sigma 12-24, but read too many reports of build and photo quality issues. There are also great reports on the Sigma lens, but I wasn't comfortable spending that kind of money with those kind of real-world reviews out there.

Not so! Lots of posts in this forum on this lens and all good reports (like the excellent feedback on this thread by RFMSports).
It has been said that the 17-40L is Canon's best selling L lens.
That fits with the usage statistics on the PBase camera/lens database ( http://www.pbase.com/cameras/canon -- scroll down past the camera data) which shows a lot of shots and users of the 17-40L which is less than a year old in the Canon lineup.
The 17-40L was my first L lens and, for most situations, is my on-camera walk around lens.

I've had this lens for about 5 months and I have to say I'm starting to use it a lot more. I had to do a family day shot at a local hospital and this was the best lens to use up close & for large group shots. I'm glad I made the purchase.

I red so many posts before about the famous 17 40 L canon lens. as you can've noticed, it's most of the time a comparison between this lens and its gold rival : the 16-35 f2.8.
with all what have been said, my main concern minutes before ordering the 17 -40 is the DOF difference. is the 2.8 DOF in close up much remarquable comapred to F4?
thanks for taking the time to answer

Don't hear much about it? It looks like in the forums here at least once a week someone asks about this lens....
Anyway, it's very good - I like the metal finish, weather sealed lens mount, it doesn't extend when zooming or focusing (the mechanism is entirely internal), and you get a hood and pouch with it. Also it's not expensive for an "L" lens, around $700.
Here's a comparison between the 17-40 and the 16-35 from Luminous Landscape: http://www.luminous-landscape.com/reviews/lenses/canon-17-40.shtml - Looks like they conclude that the image quality is even better than the 16-35, which is twice as expensive (but which also goes to f/2.8 instead of f/4).

The range 17-40 mm makes it a great "standard zoom" on the Digital Rebel or 10D. I'm also using it on my EOS 30 (= Elan 7E for Europeans....) and 17 mm is REALLY w i d e ... :)

This was my first lens that I bought with the 10d. The range is indespensible and the quality good. I use this lens about 90% of the time, however it does have it's drawbacks. My lens shows A LOT of cromatic aberrations (especially magenta). I am not sure if it is just my sample but sometimes it is so bad that the picture is not really usable (sorry I am very demanding  ) I shoot at f11-f13 about 90% of the time so there shouldn't be such obvious defects (unlike at f4 or thereabouts)(at least not to my knowledge)
For my night shots it is great since it has a fair bit of flair control. Otherwise it is a useful and fairly sharp lens.

It's my walk around lens. I love it! When I bought my Drebel I passed on the kit lens and bought the 17-40 instead. I am so glad I did what I did. :D

I love mine. It's great with a flash indoors and rocks outside. It's a bit slow inside with no flash.

Great lense, use it a lot at wedding receptions.
Built good and sturdy. Works pretty good with the 550....

OK guys you twisted my arm, going to get it tonight if he comes down a little on price. How much more would you pay the local store over B&H?

I bought mine at a local store (Samy's) for $50 less than what B&H wants. And, they had a "no tax" sale going at the time, too. Great lens!

Well, I think this lens is a great lens, and very good value too!!!
I actually use it as my 'walkabout lens because of the range it covers.
Sharp, fast af, nice contrast and a sexy red ring round the front
what more can you ask.
The AF is good too, it can keep up with a you labrador and a puppy while they play!

I love it and usually keep it on the 10d as my walking around lens. It's an "L" , so you can expect and will get exceptional picture quality..Bob <><

Oh, what the heck I might as well take a slightly different tack....
I have the 17-40L, and I love it. It is everything a person could want on a wide-angle zoom. Even so, it is not my first choice unless I know I'm really going to need the extra wide-angle. Otherwise, my favorite lens is the 24-70L. The range is just a bit more useful to me for all-around shooting.
The 17-40 is a wonderful lens. I don't dispute the contention that it's the best available for the money, nor am I at all surprised that it's Canon's best-selling L lens. It should be.

This picture looks like a real gem! What an expression! I'd take him out of this and place him into another environment though...

Thanks. It was just a snapshot with my (then) new 17-40 and bounced 420EX. I snapped a half dozen and picked that one as the best expression. I was not even looking at the background, as usual. (Focused on my son, and all...)
I was enjoying his cowboy get-up and the new lens at the time.
