Just visiting my father who bought his camera about 2 weeks after me. I noticed that his has a focus assist lamp (i assume thats what its for, it lights up when focussing). This lamp is just under the 10D logo. My 10D doesn't have this feature. Both have the same factory installed 2.0.0 firmware.

Whats up with this?

That's not a focus assist lamp. It's the redeye reduction/selftimer lamp. It's function is detailed in the manual, but here's the skinny. When set to reduce redeye this lamp comes on for a few seconds before the flash fires to partially blind and disorient your victim err "subject". The lamp either makes them squint or forces their pupils to dialate thus it reduces the chance of redeye. In self timer mode it pulses to let you know how soon the camera is going to fire or was it how soon it's going to fall off the fence post you've balanced it on to take a self portrait. I know it's one of the two.

For focus assist the 10D uses a pulsed pattern from the built-in flash. It can be used even if you don't intend to fire the flash with the picture. The details for using this feature are also pretty clearly laid out in the Manual.

Don't worry, you didn't get ripped off.

I don't suppose anyone knows how to turn that timer light off? ???

It really annoys me when taking closeup shots of reflective surfaces because the light only turns off after the shutter has opened, leaving me with a bright area in the photograph!

Why not use the mirror lock feature instead of relying on the timer or maybe use a remote release.

I use the timer because I don't want vibrations from my hand to shake the camera, the way I understand mirror lockup (& correct me if I'm wrong) is that you still need to touch the camera to take the picture.

I guess a remote release switch is the only way :(

I just had another thought but can't confirm because I don't have my 10D with me. Do you have red-eye reduction turned off? I'm wondering if it's the timer that keeps the light on even when the shutter is tripped or if it's the red-eye reduction.

If you do a lot of closeup or macro work, the remote release might be a good investment. I use it all the time whenever I'm doing macros and copies.

Redeye reduction is off. The timer / redeye reduction light on stays on for a fraction of a second after the shutter goes up, but its enough to be a problem.

I've been thinking about getting a cable release for a while now, especially for my night shots on my film EOS.

I used to use the self timer and mirror lockup to get shake free shots before I bought a cable release.

The timer light definately turned off before the shutter opened. I know because I checked.

I would suggest you check it again because I'm sure it isn't supposed to stay on once the shutter opens.

Cheers

Ian

I didn't know where the extra light was coming from to start with until I did a test & had the camera take a picture of itself in the mirror (using the timer), the light was definately on.

or use one of those little kids band-aids... it wont leave any sticky stuff on the camera when you pull it off and they are small...

But add a red stripe and then after removal, market it on ebay as "slightly used, mint condition L tape".

What sort of specs would said "L Tape" have?

I'm thinking it would probably cost £30 per meter, only be compatible with Canon SLRs, function as a backup neck strap, contain an Ultra Sonic Dust & Water repellant and be deliciously tasty so that Scottes could eat it. :D :D :D
