the lens is super cheap, build quality is mediocre...so i have been told, however, i dont see it as that bad, but i have never used an L lens, so i have nothing to compare other than my kit lens. they say autofocus is slow, again, cant say i have noticed that. i do know, that the quality of pictures taken is increadiable!!!! i absolutley LOVE the way they turn out!!!!!!!

That's what I did in the beginning. The little bugger really was a tremendous help in learning and in many ways it acted as a bridge to the higher-end glass because it helped me actually see what the camera was capable of producing. (I guess you can also say it was the devil in disguise!!!)
Have fun...it's a fantastic bargain...that little bugger!

It's definately a fun lens. It will be faster than anything else you have, and it will help you figure out if FAST is even a requirement for your style of shooting. If you find out that you don't need FAST, then it's better to find that out for $70 than $300+. You should get some extension tubes to use with it. Lots of fun, and a cheap macro setup!

OK..even cooler is the Canon 50mm 1.8 Series I. Internal focusing, METAL bayonet mount. I got mine off of Ebay for $55 about three years ago.
It takes me back to when we old guys were learing to shoot with a 35mm rangefinder body with a "fast fifty" (f 2 or f 1.8 or even f1.4) Canon even made an f1.0 I think.
Anyway, we shot "available light" with TriX B/W ASA 400 film. If you were good you printed only full frame...no cropping...to prove you could really compose and used no meter. Avearge room light exposure was 30th at f2.
Ah well...that lens takes me back....
It also gets shots you can't egt with the fancier stuff.

I thought that the 50 1.8 was the thrifty and the 50 1.4 was the nifty? any thoughts on this?

All true. And if mine fell off my camera today, I'd buy another one tomorrow. I think you can get them in the checkout line at Wal-Mart now. ;)

I am totally totally new to DLSR photography. Have just ordered a 400D to replace my ageing canon A80. Trying to understand all this new jargon and after owning a point and shoot its going to be a steep learning curve. Will stick with the 400D kit lens for a while but the nicely priced nifty fifty keeps popping up in threads and although probably a dumb question what is this lens ideal for and how does it differ to the kit lens ?

Not a dumb question at all! Two things:
1.) A 50mm lens approximates what the human eye sees. Go much wider than that and physical features (noses, etc.) can begin to take on an unflattering characteristics. This makes the 50 very nice for taking portraits.
2.) The "nifty fifty" is a "prime" or "standard" lens, meaning it is not a zoom lens which has varying focal lengths. This requires fewer lens elements. As a general rule the fewer lens elements the light has to travel through, the less chance you have for distortion. This helps give the "nifty" very good quality even though it is very inexpensive. There is more to it, but I think this is the most basic explanation.

Thanks

Mk. II is the newer. Optically they're identical. The Mk I is sturdier, so will cost more where you can find it. It's also out of production.

On a crop body wouldn't a 35mm lens more approximate the "normal or standard" that the 50mm does on a full-frame?
Now granted the 35mm Canons are a bit more expensive than the fifty and doesn't have a 'rhyming' sounding name...but there are certainly sigma versions in that range as well.
I love my 50mm, but in the crop world it still feels a little 'zoomy'

$70 ??
You guys are super lucky. Over here I can only find them on amazon / ebay for just under £60 + delivery for a new one and £50ish for used on ebay.
At current rates thats about $115.
I'm a total newb I suppose. I bought my XTi / 400D on a road trip round the South West US and love it to bits, put must have put 2000 shots through it in a month. Got some shots I'm happy with on the stock lens and have got an 75/300 II as well and bought a super cheap 28/90 canon f4 for intermediate stuff which I'm thinking about listing off if this tamron 28/300 I've just bought works well enough - but the sight of some of the shots coming off the 50mm are making me a tad exciteable, so I'm interested - just trying to find out if they are good for me interests.
I'm big on nightime and low light shots (I live very close to the coast so lots of sea and marine backgrounds) and also landscapes / building shots.
Any advice would be welcomed, like everyone I'd like the 1.4 but I'm not flush or good enough to get the return.
Cheers in advance!

The 50 1.8 is an awesome lens. I love it for portraits.
WEll worth the $70-80 it cost, IMO.

I'm a newb and even I've got 3 x 2gb cards!
I've got 2 of the Lexar 133x's which I wasn't sure about but they are noticeably quicker than my Toshiba card. I got a $50 mail in rebate for the Lexars as well, so might be worth checking your local stockists.
Still, sub $50 for 2 gig is nothing!
As for storage, I shoot in l+raw all the time now and they are around 12mb a pop + jpg so maybe 4 shots!
Even my mobile carries a 2gb sony pro card...:p

You might be just as well off buying from adorama.com, b&h, or amazon.
Prices run starting at about $70 USD on those sites.
After adding shipping and insurance on eBay - i think i paid about $60 for mine.
The extra $10 + shipping might be worth it to get a new one?

I shot almost exclusively with my 50mm 1.8 for awhile. Took about 1,000 shots with it and the aperture blades started sticking and making my camera ERR. What a POS! I'm going for the 50mm 1.4 next.
