View Full Version : Suggestion: Canon S Series section (S1, S2, S3)

I think it would be a great idea to have this subsection because it doesnt REALLY fit into a "Compact Canon" nor any of the EOS/DSLR sections... I'm sure there are others that would agree.
Has this been brought up before? Could there be a reason for this? Just an idea...
Thanks

It's a compact/point and shoot camera. Yeah, I know there's a "manual mode", but it's still labeled "point and shoot". I think it fits right in with the g-series. Maybe the G-series forum should be renamed "G and S-series cameras" or what not.

While considered a P&S camera, are you going to tell me all of the "P&S" cameres like the A10, A20, IXUS, S20, S30, S40, S110 etc. are just as advanced and a grade of quality like the S3?
You seem to act like DSLR's are the only way to shoot great photos. Someday when i have the time and money to spend with camera's i may very well own one, but at the same time it's good to have somethin family friendly, smaller,, cheaper, somethin that takes QUALITY photos, and that i CAN and do have lenses, filters, etc with and still (if i had the expierence) take some high quality photos similar to a DSLR. Lenses and accessories may not be as high quality but knowing how to use your camera and manipulate and capture what you want is the biggest part.
just b/c everyone doesnt choose to shoot raw and do extensive PP doesn't matter. And sometimes, it's nice to shoot 30fps video...
like i said, someday i will probably own one but don't bash the thousands of ppl that want quality without going the DSLR route

maybe your right...

Of course not. Never said that. That's why I grouped it with the G-series. It's an "advanced" P&S.

Never said it. I took some great photos with an SD400 for many many months.

I rarely do either of those.
don't bash the thousands of ppl that want quality without going the DSLR route
I didn't.

Geez, you're just a little out of line here. I'm not sure why you're even saying those things. Nothing like this was said, or - in my opinion - even implied in any way. Calm down.

I think lots of things were implied, the use of inverted commas is generaly a good sign something is being implied.
In this case it would appear it was a complete lack of respect for the orginal posters position about the ablity of the S series cameras. :)
But, then we all know by now that Ronalds' hands are simply to big to use anything smaller than a 5D, so we put up with his "SLR's are the only real camera" type comments
As for the orginal topic, I can't see the point, or need for a seperate S series forum.
In terms of operation they are very similar to the A series cameras, and both are very, very capable. Just because the S series has a longer lens and IS dosn't make it a superior camera, or warrent a seperate forum for its users.
After all the camera spesific forums are aimed at technical discussions, hence the seperation of compacts, G series and SLR's. Done not because of any inhierent superiority in each type, but to better manage traffic levels in each forum and allow users to more easily find specific information, and get answers to questions.
Quite simply form a technical view point the S series cameras operate much the same way the A, SD series etc operate, and often prone to similar problems and fixes.

Thanks for the friendly comments, Moppie. Jesus. It's a point and shoot. If I say that, I'm an ass? Fair chance I've got then, huh? I never said "why not buy an SLR? It's a lot better". In fact, I never said it was a bad camera. I said it was a point and shoot, and classified as such. That's not an opinion, an insult, or anything negative. It's just what it is. For your information, I don't have a 5D. Never said anything about SLR's being the only camera. I didn't say anything mean; you did. We don't need that stuff. I said the same thing you did after you bashed me.
Thanks again.
A sincere thank you, however, to Scottes. He lives in reality, and understands what I said.

Oh, and the use of quotes doesn't magically imply a mean, sarcastic attitude. It's a quote. Quotation marks aren't the work of the devil. It's called "Manual Mode". That's why I put it in quotes. "Point and shoot" is a term. That's why I put it in quotes.

Sorry, Ronald, but Iv never seen a postive comment from you towards any compact camera, or for that matter thier users. Implied or otherwise.
Not everyone lives in the same reality :)

C'mon guys. This isn't worth all the angst.
Some people swear by their P&S (I, being one of them), while for others, it's just not enough camera for whatever reasons. Because it doesn't work for one person does not begin to imply that it won't work perfectly well for someone else, or that it's in any way an inferior technology.
I would suggest that you kiss and make up except that logistically, it's probably not a practical solution to the problem at hand. Instead, I'll just ask that you both stow your righteous indignation and let this thread get back on track.
Please, please, please don't make me lock this thread.
Thanks.

No problem Tom. I won't kiss him, but I'll stop replying to him.
Let it be known, I did nothing to make anyone badger me, or warrant such behaviour.
I do think, anyway, that the S-series should be included in the G-series forum, and renamed as such. The G-series isn't so exclusive these days, eh?

The G-series has gone down in my esteem. The G7 doesn't support RAW, and that makes it useless to me. I'll just keep limping along with the G5 for now.

I wouldn't worry Ronald, nothing wrong was said.
There are really only two groups; PnS and DSLR's. They definately aren't an SLR, so of course they fit into the Pns category. That is in now way a criticism however.
