Has anyone that uses AcDsee and "upgraded" to version 6 noticed that it is terribly slow? I email tech support and they said that was an issue. They gave me some setup tips to try and help, but it is still slow. Why would they release it if it was "an issue".
I am thinking of requesting a refund!

That kind of defeats the purpose of ACDsee!!!!

I still run 4.. what does 6 have to offer?

I am still trying to figure that out. It is a database driven program now...they are leaning on more of a archive managing direction than quick viewing. It really sucks, because I don't use it for keeping track of my archives. I used it mainly for speed. Now, everytime I want to open a pic up quickly I might as well do it in Photoshop...

I have version 5 and it works well with browsing and conversions. I'm to scared to try 6 & I'm glad someone finally made a post about it. There is a review written on it in one of the past months I believe shutterbug or one of its equals.
Version 5 has opened my RAW files but its weak in color management.

I also use ACDSee 5 and occasionally the program would hang. But overall, it's a fast program for managing my photos.

As someone else mentioned, ACDSee 5 is able to open CRW (RAW) files created by my G3 and display it onscreen. But when I tried to change the zoom level, ACDSee just displays a black screen. Anyone know why this is? Is it some setting I need to change in ACDSee to get it to display RAW files at different zoom setting?

I have two versions of ACDSee on my system (PIII/800 - Win98SE) - version 3.2 which is my default viewer and version 5 which I use for batch renames, categories, etc.

I'm really not very happy with version 5 - extremely slow to load which is why I use 3.2 as my default viewer. I was also getting the black screens mentioned by mookie but found if I waited long enough the image would appear.

I've seen version 6 on someone else's machine and I wouldn't buy it. Even slower than 5 and it doesn't seem to add a lot of benefit in the way of features.

6 blacks out on raw files too. I wish breeze browser had some of the function that AcDsee has and it would be perfect for me....

I am dissappointed in AcDsee for the verions 5 and 6. I am going to unistall 6 and stick with 4....newer is not always better...

Off topic but another program that has fallen to this is Microsoft Money..
200 was simple and had a nice GUI. Now Money 2003 has way too many features...

I had 5 and upgraded to 6 for about 2 hours. It took me 15 minutes to discover it didn't work for me and over an hour to get rid of it again and re-install 5. I wonder what the company had in mind when they developed 6, especially with not supporting RAW-files anymore.

I have owned them all, installed them all, used them all (sometimes briefly), and now I'm back to 2.43 (Classic).

I couldn't be happier.

For anyone interested, you can download the older versions, all the way up to version 4.02 from here for free. Don't worry, it's legal.

Yeah, I use version 6 too and I've noticed the sluggishness of the viewer compared to the older versions. It's morphing into a database as you say.

For just rapid fire haul ass viewing, I use a program called IrfanView, available at www.irfanview.com

It's the fastest viewer I've ever used. Very compact and useful. And, it's free. It may suit you for quick viewing. It really is blazingly fast. I use it all the time.

I have Version 6. After the trial of Version 5, I went to buy when the new version came out so I got it instead. It is really slow for me (repeating what everyone else is saying).

I am planning on putting a second hard drive in the machine to hold files and to use as the scratch disk in Photoshop. Has anyone any experience of whether this speeds up ACDSee as well?

Hi Laz,

Can't imagine why it would be legal since ACD Systems is still selling ACDSee Classic 2.43 for US$34.95 -- http://www.acdsystems.com/english/products/index.

But this is just an observation... I don't own (or want) a badge. :) I still recommend 2.43 for viewing, however it's obtained.

Well, they aren't free. I didn't realize that at first  I've never downloaded anything from there before... until just now :)

They still have to be registered after thirty days. It does have versions there that ACD Systems doesn't offer anymore though, which would otherwise be unavailable.

Good catch Don

Hi Laz,

Good... someone who takes things in the spirit they're offered. Cheers.

You (and they) are right, though... sometimes newer isn't better, and one of the prime examples of that in my own computing/photographing life is ACDSee. Reminds me of the original Thunderbird with porthole windows that slowly evolved into a Gran Turismo Blimp.

Thanks for the link... I'd seen it long ago and forgot about it.

Many moons ago when I started using ACDSEE I became hooked. Their newer stuff is very slow and cumbersome. Notice they still have "classic" available which is still fast. But, "classic" is pretty-much a viewer and in later versions they tried to be all things to all users. I don't use it anymore.

I tried using ACDSee6 trial version and was pretty ticked off with all the icons that showed up on my desktop. I uninstalled it right away. I'm sticking with CompuPic (http://photodex.com/products/pro/index.html) It has served me well for many years, is quick, and does everything one could ask of image management software. 8)

They just emailed out a notice of an upgrade to 6.03 for free. it is supposed to fix some of the stuff we are bitching about...

I loaded the upgrade and so far it seems a whole lot faster. It loaded in 6 seconds on my p3 500mhz. Strangly though, it loads slower on my p3 1.8g laptop.

<Sigh> I have the same story. Downloaded 2.43 and used it enought to find out I liked it. Then I bought v5 at the store. AFter a while it quit working. I DID get a reply from their tech support telling me to delete two files. It worked when I did this but I have had to delete those files every time the software wouldnt load. The review at dpreview.com seemed to indicate they had fixed some of those bugs, but I see here it isnt true, and its still $34.95 for v6!

For me they have shot themselves in the foot. I'll keep using 2.43 and ignore the nag screen.

Don't know what there doing. I have been using version 3.1 for almost 4 years now, after DL'ing and promptly uninstalling several versions from 4-6x. They seem to have taken some major steps backwards it appears.
