I have a little mad money and was considering a lens, but I think that I have decided to get a polarizer and maybe another ND grad (or two). I have settled on the Sing-Ray LB warming polarizer. I have never really used step rings before so these may be silly questions, but I will ask them anyway.

1) My lens sizes are 52mm, 58mm, 67mm, and 77mm. It seems like a big step from 52 to 77mm, will this be okay? The 52mm diameter lenses are my 35mm and the 50mm lenses.

2) The 77mm diameter lenses are my Canon 10-22 and Tamron 17-35. I know that I may see vignetting (especially on the 10-22) but how bad should I expect this to be? If it will be really bad I could opt for a 67mm filter, but I would really like to be able to use the polarizer at wider angles.

3) What is your opinion of hard versus fade edges on graduated ND filters? I have a 2-stop fade (looking to get a 3-stop) and have sometime had a difficult time getting the fade correct. I know that there is no black/white answer to this one, I am just looking for opinions.

Thanks for your help in this, it is greatly appreciated!

First, my understanding, although I have never used one, is that warming filters are corrected by the camera and therefore have no effect. Second, keep in mind that 'steping-up' even a bit could prevent you from using the lens hood.

Be warned, its amazingly easy to get a polarizer stuck on a step up ring, works fine for other filters I have but for CPL's i've gotten 2 to suit the sizes I need most.

I just purchased a 77mm CP filter, and I got the rings for the 58 & 72, something I never thought of was that you cant use your lens hoods after you do this :(

for example on my sigma 17-70 I have to put the hood on and then put the filter on and its very difficult to get it on there, the scary part is that if I cant get it off I would have to cut the hood :(

i use a cheapie screw on hood with CP. the screw on hood threads onto the CP and affords some protection from bumps and flare and makes it easier to adjust the CP.
