sorry, one more post
I'd like you to look at this one

In my shots, it is very important to me to direct the eye. I spent a lot of time working on this photo.
It is not a picture of a crowd, it is a picture of a person.
Notice how all the others seem to be wearing dark colors? That was all hand-done.
Anyway, I'm not calling it out to brag on it -- I just spent so freaking long editing it... I wanted someone to see it :)

haha - ok, one more post -- but for a different reason.
Some kids saw me shooting, and started yelling "Photo! Photo! Photo!". I like candid work, so I didn't think much of it... I just swung the camera around and shot it.
http://www.hejl.com/media/Snapshots/madrid/large-51.html
The kid on the right just made that great pose, and the kid on the left has his cell open. I don't think it is a spectacular shot or anything -- but I think it captures the "youth of today".
Anyway, it's funny --- to spend so long looking for shots, then to have one given to you.
Ok, it's midnight now. Night everyone.

The first thing I looked at was the person on the middle of the picture. Cool stuff!

And what a great subject you have tagging along with you!
That subject is Laura, my wonderful wife. She is doing a journal of our trip, if you would like to see it:

Entire gallery is really great. I especially like the street clown capture. In my beginner opinion every shot has superb composition.

Thanks! On a related subject - does anyone have tips for "going pro"? I see myself doing advertising work - not a private studio.
One issue is that I have a very, very good job now.
My hope/desire/fantasy was that I could stay employed and still shoot some jobs. Does anyone do this? I'm really walking in blind... I don't know the first thing about how to get started with an agency.
I'm not in a big rush. I still have plenty to learn.
And I've been shooting, and shooting, and shooting...

Very nice shots- I like the wide angle used. Not your average holiday snaps!

Really great stuff!!! I love the one of the girl putting on her jacket, and you can see the motion blur of the jacket, too cool!
Excellent work!

I really like your photographs of Madrid. I went there last september, I could 've stayed a complete month just to take photographs. The city is very interesting, specially at night.. :)

Love the last elevator shot, btw.
I've been seeking out fluorescent light lately. I intentionally don't white balance and get that cold, institutional look. I actually didn't 'post' that image at all (other than histogram) -- that's the data straight off the sensor. The lights in that elevator are old-school ... The temperature must be way up in the 4500+ range.
Anyway, that shot is a self-portrait. Shot-fromt-the-hip. :)
Cheers,

Haha... Yeah, it is 10:30pm right now (on a Wednesday) and it is just starting to get loud outside. It hits a peak around 3am, then starts to die down. (But I still see people out at 4). When do they work!?
I'm on vacation -- so I'm allowed to do this :)

Hi Everyone!
I uploaded some new photos last night. My G5 is stuck in customs (arg), so I'm doing all the photo editing on my laptop (read: slow). And, without my tablet, my dodge/burn sucks. I may re-edit some of them when my "real" computer arrives. Overall I'm happy with them though.
http://www.hejl.com/media/Snapshots/madrid/
Note that I also changed the order – now the newest photos are first (so you don’t need to dig through all the old ones every time)
I also added captions, to help explain the shots.
Comments welcome!! I like getting feedback!
We are having an awesome adventure — and it has been fun to share it,

ps - I'm sucking up a ton of bandwidth with FTP today, so I'm sorry if my site is a little slow

Again Jim, really nice work! It inspires me a lot. You seem interested by the same subjects I would be interested to, but it turns out differently than what I do. :)
I also have the 24-105 lens and I love it. What lens di you use on this photo ?

I shot that photo with the 24-105. It's the only lens I use. In that shot, the lens is wide open, and I am holding very tight to a lamp post. (Anything to avoid eye-level sometimes...)
The 5d is full frame, so I really do get 24mm.
That my work inpires you is really the highest compliment one can give. It means a lot to me.
Cheers Chris,

JimHejl: Ahhhh yeah !! Right, forgot about that, I have a 30d. Wow, 24mm is really wide :) That's why i'm thinking of getting a 10-22mm. Please continue to shoot, you're very creative.
Akula: At least you're not in Canada :)

Neat find, huh?
