Hi. I am new to digital photography and just recently was given a Rebel XT. Ps. Im in love. Currently I am shooting in JPEG because I am still just learning about my camera and not ready for RAW (but someday I will be). Anywho, I will be going to Europe soon... backpacking for a month or so. I will be taking my DSLR and probably be shooting a lot of photos. I was looking into purchasing another CF card. I have a 2 gig card now but I am positive by that time I will be needing more. So as I slowly get to my question. I am looking for a website to host my files but be able to download them at full size. (I like to blow them up poster size, etc..) Any suggestions?

I was thinking about buying a big CF card too?? Worth it?

Thanks bunches.

How are you intending to get the image files from the camera to the hosting service? WIll you be bringing a laptop? If so, get a small external hard drive and copy the images from the CF card to the laptop and then back them up to the external drive. You'll have them in two places and if you're shooting only JPG then something like 30Gb should have enough room for all your images until you get home.

In my opinion, you should have several memory cards.

The ability to copy the files to a computer would be extremely advantageous.

If you will have access to a computer - even if you don't want to carry one with you - I would suggest taking a physically small USB 2.0 hard drive such as my 80GB Firelite. It's almost the same size as my PDA.

In addition, you would want to carry a small card reader.

Those two items and a borrowed computer with two available USB ports would allow you to copy files from the card(s) to the portable hard drive.

And consider that even if you did have access to a computer and were to upload the full size images to a hosting service, it would take about an hour to upload 500Mb of images (about 200 full size JPGs) using a very fast connection. At a more typical upload speed of 256Kbps it'll take over 4 hours, and at dialup it'll be close to 24 hours.

I don't think online storage of your images is practical, especially on a backpacking trip.

Thank you all very much. I think that I will be looking into a small external or multiple memory cards. I really appreciate all the help I get from POTN.

Any suggestions for the best places to get CFs or Externals at a reasonable price? (I am a college student paying for everything independently :()

There are several sizes. When I bought my 80GB, it was about $140 or so. These are, by far, the smallest and lightest portable drives (real hard drives, not memory sticks) that I have ever found. They are extremely fast as well (as long as the computer has USB 2.0 ports).

CF cards are available everywhere - you just need to shop for price.

The Creative Zen Video W could work for you, as a MP3 player when travelling is great for filling time and you can slip the CF card into the units slot and backup. You could load it with video's before you leave too and either watrch on the screen or plug into a TV. You won't even need to find a computer. Neat eh ;-)

Condy. Thats real sweet. Thanks for the tip. Sounds like a good idea considering my ipod crashed on me 4 months ago.
