View Full Version : 1 Series and 300 f2.8: Bag?

MDJAK

If all goes according to plan, I'll FINALLY be the proud owner of the 300 f2.8L tomorrow. Is there a simple shoulder bag or sling bag or backpack, that will hold just that combination with little else?

Thanks,
mark

PS: Don't tell me to search. I don't search, I call 411. That's you.:)

I use the Lowepro 600aw for the 300 with hood attached and 1D or the Photo Trekker with the hood reversed

Gee, thanks, colickeycat. ;) :p

What, no picture of it? No link to the bag? Sheesh, and all the help I've been to you over the past 20 years. I'm telling your wife. And I'll be the first to let Dante know when you DO fall off a cliff so he can steal her.

You are going to see my smiling face cradling that baby tomorow when I post it.

Just looked at the 600 on B&H. Thanks for making me do the leg work.

It says it can carry a 600 with a pro body. I don't want it that big. Is that a backpack, btw?

I'm going to look at the other one you recommended sans link. :)

The 600 is a backpack. It will hold the 300 with the hood on, most bags are going to have to be hood reversed. Here is your link ;)

How stupid am I? My backpack is the photo trekker. Don't like it. I only use it when I go on vacation and want to take everything I've got. Then it stays in the hotel room and my smaller bag comes out with me.

Now get with it, folks. I demand more suggestions. ;) NOW.:)

please. pretty please.

The only backpack she'll wear is one carrying library books. A real book worm.

I presume you will take along lenses other than the 300 f2.8 as well?

then how about the Think Tank Airport Antidote? A smallish backpack that is 6.5" deep, enough for the lens hood of the 300 and a 1D serieis body with L bracket is also 6.5" tall. check out the links "view configurations" and "view all features".

http://www.thinktankphoto.com/ttp_product_ArprtAntdt.php
The Antidote is also is designed for a tripod, and you will need one with the 300 2.8, after all it is almost 8 lb by itself.

The largest slingbag is the Lowepro Slingshot 300, but I would have the strong doubts about the comfort of carrying the 300 f2.8 and a few other lenses with it, even if you got everything to fit ok. Basically the one strap design of the slingshot series gets rather uncomfortable as the bag gets rather heavy. This negates the accessability advantage as you don't want to go very far with a loaded up slingshot. The 300 does have a waist belt to bear some of the load, but this is a compromise as it gets in the way of rotating to the front. And the sling bags do not accomodate a tripod.

Kinesis L-311 is a great bag for that combo, has a small pouch on the outside that can be used to carry converters and spare batteries or a second camera. www.kgear.com

I have the Lens Trekker 600, and it will certainly hold the 300, but I think it would be overkill. My FD 300 f2.8L swims inside of it. If you want to scale down a bit and still hold it with the body, take a look at this Tenba bag:

Hey MDJAK,
the mini trekker holds the 300 with the hood reversed if you take out one half of the dividers. then theres still room in the other for a 70-200 or flash or smaller lenses or whatnot.

PS you are going to want to get a Hood Hat to replace to crappy canon cover. i BELIEVE its the XXL for the 300 2.8, but dont quote me on that. I gotta tell you its the best thing ive bought for my 300 yet lol

Kinesis and Lightware both have bags that fit the 300 and camera. However, I also prefer the Lowepro 600 becuase I really don't like reversing the hood. It's got room for the cam, lens with hood forward, and extenders in place. Just take it out and you're ready to shoot. Be a man, who cares if it's big?:p

I don't care that it's big if I'm out hiking in the country, but to walk around Manhattan with that monstrosity? Uh-uh.

As to Kinesis, I can't tell what kind of bag it is. Is it a shoulder bag, or a backpack?

thanks

Yes, yes, a thousand times yes.

May carry the 85L in a pouch for good measure. Now I need the 16-35.

Do you think a straight up trade for the 100-400 is a good deal?

To be honest, I wouldn't carry that thing around the city either.:)

The Kinesis is a shoulder bag that can be converted into a backpack with an optional strap.

Anybody have experience with Thinktank's Glass Taxi? It looks good. I have a few of their other products.

Hey Mark,

What about the Domke Iguana 20 (I just picked up one on Ebay and checked out the specs on B&H...it looks big enough for what you are wanting)

Not a bad bag; holds a bunch but may be a little big for just his camera and 300. I've got one in my closet along with some other parts of the Quest line-up (which has reverted to Kata).

Not sure if ya're still looking for a bag MDJAK, but I'd advice the Kinesis stuff !

The L311 holds the 300mm, hood reversed, with an extender and a pro camera, the L511 allows you to mount the hood as well ! Which is VERY handy !With some optional stuff you turn it into a backpack.
I use my 300mm a lot, I still don't have the bag since I want to combine the backpack with a system belt and that takes some thinking and planning :)
But it's soooooo comfortable to be able to put away the 300mm, just like that, with your camera and hood mounted.Less chance of damnagingor falling hoods or ... missing a shot.
It's a nice combination to have one body, trigger ready, on the 300mm and another body with a wide angle or a 70-200 around your neck :)

I'll be dead before I stop looking for bags and camera gear.

Thanks for that link. It is interesting. At this point, I just use my Lowepro Nature Trekker II. While I have to turn the hood around, once I take it out, I usually keep it out all day with no need to put it back.

Those bags that hold it and the camera with the hood in place are just huge.

I'm sure that you'll find, after working with the 300 f/2.8 that the original case will work fine for you for transporting the lens. I bought one of the Kinesis bags to keep my 300 with the 1D attached in and after using if for a day, I ended up chucking it and just going around carrying the 300 with the camera on my shoulder or with the lens strap on my shoulder and the combo hanging down near my waist where I could hold it with my hand. The bag was just one more thing I had to carry that got in the way when shooting. :)
