I already have a Canon EF 1.4x II. I want to get a 2x. I am leaning towards Kenko Pro 300 AF 2x because it's cheaper and more specifically designed for the Tokina lens. I'm also pondering the 3x version. :? No AF etc. I know I'm dreaming (900mm f/8.4, do they actually sell any of these things). What do you think,
1. Which 2x?
2. Yes or No 3x?

I personally would not buy a 2x, but if I was I would get Canon.
EDIT: Corrected. Canon TCs will work with that lens. Either way I'd get the Canon.

I have seen at least one post of the Tokina ATX 300 with a Canon 1.4 t.c.

I'd go with the 2X first.. and see how that pans out before trying to get a 3X.. really you'd be better suited with AF and a combo that "may" produce decent images..
In this case,. I also think you should try that Kenko.. although scary sounding to the "L' users,. Tokina and Kenko are all part fo the same company and Tokina recomends the Kenko.. they may match better than trying it with a Canon 2X.
re; 3X...
I have looked at that t-con... I have one specific application I'd like to try it with.. but I am not to impressed with ANY of my lenses on a 2X so I just can't imagine the 3X would be very usable...
ps. ...I was thinking my 500mm with a 3X MIGHT be a cheap but usable option for astro photography.. long shutters on a tripod.. etc.. I would not consider it for anything that moves :)

Re; compatibility,. I'm pretty sure that the Canon T-cons will work with the Tokina.. they work with the Sigma telephotos..
If your Canon 1.4X works,. then I'd bet the 2X will.

So, is it a consensus that a 1.4x is o.k,. a 2x is nearly worthless, and a 3x is ha ha ha....? I figured since the telephoto was a prime and f/2.8, that a 2x was good.

Well, if it's a waste of time anyway, I guess I'll save a little money and get the Kenko. My curiousity has got the better of me. I guess I should have mentioned that the Tokina 300 is in the mail. I'll post a review and maybe a t.c. review eventually. I am out of town again next week, so it will have to wait.

On a 300mm f/2.8... I too would Definatly try a 2X.. actually the 2X aint tooooooo bad on the 70-200 f/2.8...
It's not so hot on the 500mm f/4.5 though..

That's true, but he's shooting Tokina glass. Not the same caliber at Canon L. Also, for the record, I have not personally used a 2x, so I digress, but I tend not to experiment with products that get such terrible reviews. I wouldn't mind trying a 2x someday, but I'd never buy one straight up and hope it does okay.
