Roy this is the memorial at Puys Beach, Dieppe to the soldiers of the Royal Regiment of Canada. This is one of the beaches used by for the allied landings in France on the 19 August 1942. The raid was a disaster with heavy casualties.

On the 6th June 1944 the allies successfully landed in France and that is what your memorial commemorates.

The lessons learned during the 1942 landings were contributing factors in the success of the 1944 landings, hence the title.

Thanks for that, Neil - extremely interesting. I didn't know of the Canadians' abortive attempt - but I did know what it was that my memorial commemorates!:)

Until I went there, I must admit that I didn't appreciate what an unbelievably huge operation it was! (The D-Day landings).
