I have been looking around for frames and canvas pricing. From what i can see... and maybe i'm looking in the wrong places.. how are we supposed to make money on canvas and frames when they cost so darn much to acquire. I mean it seems the average price of canvas for a 24x36 online is about $140.00 and that is without a frame. That's a lot for a print, and then you have to mark it up to make money on it.. so how can you justify charging even $280.00 for it. My general rule of thumb is to mark up most of my stuff at least 200%. But maybe i'm to greedy. what say you!!

I dont see anything wrong with the prices you mentioned and the mark up? Seems pretty good value to me...

If you're creating framed 'canvas' prints, the norm is to have the pic's mounted on canvas effect board (about double the cost of the print). There's a relatively recent trend for canvas prints that are just hung unframed. They are printed 'wraparound' and they look great but are relatively expensive (about 10x the price of the print). I get slightly annoyed that want so much for my pics on canvas compared to just any old print.
I can't comment on the prices you've found because I'm in the UK.
As a side note, when working to tight budgets I've found it cheaper to buy framed prints than to buy frames.

when buying frames prints how do you go about reframing them? i mean the backs are different and you totally have to take them apart. How do you then make a new back with it looking nice and staying on?

i know it sounds like a dumb question just something i have wondered forever =)

i am just starting to research framed prints, and by that i mean, purchasing prints that are framed for me when they arrive. The problem is i can't find anyone that offers glass. you have to put your own glass in it! That means taking it apart when you get it, which well defeats the purpose i think.

currently i use canvas on demand for all my canvas needs. they are well priced (comparatively) and their site is easy to use. i have been looking to switch to mpix, but their prices are a bit higher, however they do good print work and offer a variety of other items.

if anyone has any vendor suggestions they would be welcome.

I use photos printed on canvas. Great prices and the quality is wonderful. I got a 16x20 regualar canvas on stretcher frames for $45. If you want wraparound it's $4 more. My customers have been VERY pleased with the results.

yes i've used them before. the quality is ok, no complaints from my customers with their work either. their prices are definelty better than any i've seen. i don't believe they offered framing options though. can't remember.
