Just picked up a Gitzo 1348 and Arca Swiss Monoball B-1 to sorta replace my Gitzo 2220 and Gitzo 1276M (keeping it for macro work). First thing is the 1348 is far lighter than the 2220 and far more sturdy. It also folds to a shorter length, a plus for travel and hiking. The 1348 combined with the Arca Swiss is so strong and sturdy. I placed my 300 F/2.8L IS and 1DMIIN onto the combo and it was held sturdy, in fact, very sturdy. The weight of this set-up was too much for the 2220/1276M.

Only negative points of the 1348 and Arca Swiss is the price. And after you get the Arca Swiss, you need to purchase plates for the lenses and camera plates for the camera's when not using tri-pod ringed lenses. Adds up quick. My next purchase will be either a Wimberley Sidekick or the Full Gimbal head for my 500 F/4L IS someday

Hello Cat,
Can you scan the G1348 user manual for me ?
I got it too, 2nd hand, 2 months ago without the Manual.
TIA

Nice Cat.. I just upgraded my ballhead as well, very impressed.

The initial investment in the Arca system hurts, but you can always carry it with you when you go. I was 'broken in' on an affordable Arca workalike, so I had all the plates when I upgraded. I absolutely cannot understand why people buy into proprietary systems and plates and then they find the system won't scale to what they want to do - end up dumping all of it at a loss and re-buying. For those whom the real Arca is too expensive, there are workalikes, but the plates are compatible, so there is really no excuse. But then again, what do I know....

I've owned two Gitzo CF tripods, one now, and a gitzo cf monopod. The manuals really show nothing other than a parts breakdown, "exploded view."

If you go to gitzo's website, you can download it as a pdf file.

Nice, Cat, real nice. Your wife is right, you're sick in the head when it comes to photo equipment. Now me, I'm a much more reasonable guy.

Me too. And as soon as the 16-35 hits the market, I'll feel much better.

But then I'll be feeling not well again; that is, until the replacement 1DsMKIII arrives.

Someday, I will own it too.

Not too sure about the head though.
