Hello everyone,
I'm in the process of deciding on which camera to go with.I'm currently the owner of a G3 and love it ,But I'm looking to upgrade to something a little more advanced/capable.I'm very interested in the 10d but I'm worried that it isn't as rugged as the 1d.I know the 1d has been around for a while now,But it still seems to be a nicer camera then the 10d.My question is: Is it a better camera considering that it has a lower mp count and still costs more USED then the 10d does new?Well I'm at a crossroads here. What do you think????
Any help here would be great!!

It depends on what you want to use it for. If you need high fps and fast AF go for the 1D. If you want exceptional color go for the 10D. There is a review of the 1D at http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canoneos1d/. It has a different kind of sensor then the 10D. It is a CCD not a CMOS.

Yes, the 1D is a more rugged camera. It's a professional camera. The 10D is a prosumer camera. The 1D is also weatherproof where the 10D is not.
The key is, as Scott mentions, is what are you using the camera for? Answer that question and we can advise you more easily.

well fps aren't really much of a cocern for me.I mostly photograph landscapes, nature and some astrophotography.I also enjoy macro photography. Is the 10d a fairly tough camera considering it's a metal body?Don't get me wrong I don't plan on throwing it down a flight of stairs.I just don't want to be afraid to get a little down and dirty with it.

Were you planning to use the 10D in a much harsher environment than you used your G3 or maybe even put it through more abuse than the G3? If not, then I wouldn't worry about the sturdiness of the 10D. It's a lot sturdier than the G3, that's for sure.
BTW, welcome back. Haven't heard from you in a long while. :)

I think that you would find the 10D to be rugged enough for what you are mentioning. I have put over 8 thousand images on mine in the last year and it never misses a beat. It travels real well and I'm not worried about getting down at ground level with it, although caution is always in mind.
You have to keep in mind that you have interchangeable lenses now and there is always the issue of dust bunnies on the sensor but I have found it relatively easy to clean.

thanks for the welcome back pacace.I've been super busy with work thats why I haven't been around for a while.I'm finally finding some time to take pictures again. It's the only thing keeping me out of the psychiatric ward.

If you don't mind me asking, how much is the refurb 1D? I am in need of a second body and would love a 1D over 10D. As someone else has said, the 1D has a CMOS sensor, which in my opinion are far more superior...Dean

I don't plan an being any tougher on the new camera than I was with my G3,But I just like to know it can take a little abuse and keep on ticking.

I'm approaching 18K shots on my 10D and it hasn't hiccuped once. I think the 10D will serve you much better than the 1D especially when it comes to astrophotography. The 10D has much less low-light noise than the 1D. And it has more pixels and has a better color resolution than the 1D.

MALAXOS1,
I'm not sure how much the refurbished 1d's go for,But that's what you'll have to settle for because they've been discontinued.Either that or a used one.I've seen some used ones go for around 2000.00usd.btw the 10d has the cmos sensor and the 1d has the ccd.

thanks RFMsports,
I've seen a few sites that featured the 10d for astrophotography. That's why I was leaning towards it.

Good about 1D: faster AF speed, faster shooting, 1.3x crop, better dynamic range, better color, some note sharper images.
Bad about 1D: very big and heavy, no on-board flash, smaller 4mp sensor.
From your requirements though, seems you want the best "all around camera". IMO, the 10D is the more versatile camera. Size is a big factor to some as well.
From a standpoint of image quality, from what I read it seems like a wash.
From the standpoint of ruggedness, you heard that 1D is weatherproof. The 10D is no slouch though, I've had it wet, cold, and dropped it on an occasion, and it doesn't miss a beat.
It would help to know how much the refurb is. Its probably going to be at least $2k or more. So figure if you get the 10D, you can afford a nice lense as well.
Remember that the 1D sole purpose in life is to be a pro-level PJ and sports camera. The reason people pay a premium is to get the faster shutter and bigger buffer. If you don't need those things, chances are you are better off with the 10D.

Teah, I made a mistake. I perfer a CCD over a CMOS sensor. It is true that the CMOS sensor are better at controling didital noise over a CCD, but there is a reason they put CCDs in their pro models. Over all they are better. I have found a CCD much more sharper than CMOS images. I also perfer the color, its the noise that is the problem, but then again, theres neat image...Dean

There WAS a reason back in 2001 when the 1D came out,., and it was speed,. at the time Canon had not overcome the CMOS speed hurdle,. that would have prevented the 1D famed 8fps that set the bar to this day on high speed FPS.
Canon has conquered this hurdle,. and since then ALL of Canon's PRO cameras... in fact all of Canon's DSLRs are CMOS.
Seeing as how the 1D is discontinued,. there are currently no CCD Canon DSLRs

If fps is not a concern I would select the newer technology present in the10D

I dont buy refurbished. If im spending alot of money on something I like it new. You have no idea why it was refurbished.
I am the proud owner of a Digital Rebel, and it is plenty rugged for me (the 10d is built even more rugged). So I dont think you will have a problem with it, unless you intend to drop it from a cliff while shooting.
Just my two cents....
