I had planed on buying the 100-400mm but i may have to buy a car soon and this may not be an option anymore.

Before i had chosen to get the 100-400mm i was going to get the 50-500mm sigma but was never so sure of this as the huge magnification, just doesnt seem right.

I want to be able to shoot night football games, fields are well lit and i have a 550ex...obviously a 2.8 canon would be ideal, but not practicle with my budget.

Don't buy the 135-400 it's a wonderful lens for birds but not for sport, the lens is rather soft at 400mm and need to be stopped down alot, so a tripod is necessary, the fast motion of sport will prefend this.

Look at the 80-400OS for sports at night, because of the OS system, but that will out of your budget.
Also you could try to get a 70-210f2.8 from Sigma I own that lens and it's totally amazing, its very very sharp on f2.8 and 210mm and it's cheap on the net, compared to my other lenses this is still the best.

Connect a 1.4x extender and you will have more than enough reach for football.
