Anyway, I will focus on the merganser photo. My first reaction was that I liked it. I kind of wished the ducks were a bit closer. I recognize that with three of them, you can't bring them "in your face" like the mallard in the first photo. And that's Ok with me. I am finding that I like an intermediate sized duck in the photo somewhere between the mallard and the mergansers. But that's just my preference.

Also at first glance I like the colors. I like the way the mergansers and the reeds, etc in the background seems to work together in the photo. But as I looked at it longer, the reeds in the background started to be a distraction. I started to wonder why and then I came to conclusion that it was the depth of field. You probably shot with the aperture stopped down quite a bit since the reeds making up the background are so clear. I would have preferred it if the aperture was opened up causing the background to blur. That would have kept the color which I like so much but removed some of the distraction from clear background. Again that is just my opinion based on what I like. You have had something else entirely in mind when you made the photos.
