you'd probably be better off with something wider. Sigma just made a 10mm and 4mm FE. The 4mm would have black corners so it's not what you want, but the 10 would be very similar to this 15mm on FF. The 15mm is designed from the ground up for a FF sensor (it was originally made pre digital). So don't get this lens for a cropped body. Also consider the tokina 10-17mm zoom. If you go back through this entire thread (or maybe another FE thread, not sure at this point) I've posted FF 15mm FE shots with the crops drawn on them. If you can't find them PM me and I'll post them again, but double check this entire thread first.

i was looking for pic differences b/w a camera w/ a crop of 1.3 vs 1.6

I've take 2 images with the 15mm FE and drawn in where it would be cropped to on a 1.3 and 1.6 body. I did this by setting the images size to 36mm x 24mm, then cropping that to 28.7mm x 18.7mm for the 1.3 and 22.2mm x 14.8mm for the 1.6. This considerably removes the fishiness of the lens IMHO because the distortion is much greater at the corners.

Here they are:

http://www.newschoolofphotography.com/wp-content/gallery/17-40mml--vs--12-24mm-ex-dg-comparison/IMG_2310.jpg

If you're on a 1.6 crop (your 40D) then a 10mm FE will be very similar to the entire image posted above. But if you put the 15mm FE on the 40D you'll only get the inner box. The middle box is for a 1 series non S. I highly recommend the tokina 10-177 FE because it's a 10mm FE, but also zooms if 10 is too wide, so why not? The Sigma 10mm FE (DC, so not for FF) is also another option, but I'm not sure if it's out yet.

Good Luck!

and make sure you don't just shoot with FEs because that's what you see online. They're way overused/played out in the action sports realm.

Excellent illustration of the diminishing effect of the 15mm fish-eye in crops Ben. I'm looking forward to seeing the Sigma 10mm, but it looks like the price may not be much different from that of the Tokina zoom.

thanks jacobsen,
theres a pretty easy comparison. i luckily found a store that had a tokina 10-17mm and its definitely what i want.
and i dont plan on using the FE all the time, because like you said, it is way overused....but it does work for enough shots.

good to hear.
They are a ton of fun. I've wanted one for 10 years but thought I'd either never use it or use it too much... So far I'm using it a good bit, but hopefully not too much. As long as you think about what you're shooting you'll be fine, it's just a ton of new people want to get into action sports photography and they thinking buying a camera and a FE will have them set. You sound like you understand it's just one part of the bag of trick so you'll be fine. Enjoy it and share pictures when you get it.

even as new as i am in photography, i know that sticking with one lens primarily like the FE, can get boring after a while....unfortunately im the type of person who cant keep something "stock" from factory. im sure within the next few months ill have more lenses than i need/want.

I know I shoot with the FE a lot, but IMHO for what I'm shooting it's the right lens. The only times I should have used something else are for the shots of my buddy Jeff (the other skier I'm following). The FE was a bit wide for that, but it was on the camera, and that's the same run I did the self portraits, so I didn't feel like swapping mid run.

Ben, those are great. It's hard enough to shred the hill and shoot at the same time, worrying about focus, etc. The FE works great for that kind of shooting. Not to mention making the gondola seem actually large. :)

jacobsen1
17th of December 2007 (Mon), 09:17
Yeah, thanks.

Shooting myself was easier than I thought. Because of the insane DOF the FE gives you I set it to Tv and 1/125th... That put the exposures above f8 so I put it in MF, dialed infinity to f8 and snapped away. With infinity at f/8, 6" was centered on the focusing ring, so I knew I was OK. The other nice thing with the FE is the sun takes up much less of the picture if/when it makes it in, so that one part gets blown, but not the whole image. Then I just had to figure out a way to hold on to the camera. I had the strap wrapped around my arm so I wouldn't completely drop it if it slipped. I did get a cold hand though...

I just visited my account on the B&H website and discovered that my wife found my wishlist and ordered the 15mm f/2.8 fisheye for me for Christmas. (Cyber equivalent of peeking in the closet!) While fishing for comments about how it works with a cropped camera like the 400D, I thought the following from jacobsen was worthy of another post and a heart-felt thanks. Guess she didn't scroll down far enough to find the 5D on the wishlist!

I just recieved my canon 15mm fisheye in the mail from B&H, I have to say, since I don't often have the luck of getting the 16-35 from the photo suite at my local paper (some other photog with more experience gets it first as well as the 5D), this has become my UWA. I am going to catch up to that guy with this lens mounted on a 20D, his equipment is always good, but I tend to get better angles, shots, etc. (on account of my small stature of a 17 yr old HS senior vs. 56 year old senior photog)

Well, 4 months later and I just bought one... should be here tomorrow.

Not sure what my plan is for this--probably do some landscape, I think it could be fun for groups of people, car shows and I am taking a trip to Italy in the summer, I think it could be fun to use there as well. Hopefully I'll get some good use out of it though. :)

All that happens is that you get a crop of the central area of the full-frame image, which most people consider neither one thing nor the other. It is certainly not a 'regular wideangle', but the fish-eye effect is not very strong either.

If you don't want the fish-eye effect, but want maximum wideangle with a 40D, you've got a choice between the Canon 10-22 and the Sigma 10-20 (aside from using a fish-eye and then 'defishing' with Photoshop). It'll be interesting to see if Sigma (the most likely manufacturer to make extreme lenses for crop cameras) release a wider prime, equivalent to the full-frame 14mm, which would have to be around 9mm. So far there's no such thing on the market.

ultrawide = canon 10-22 or sigma's version 10-20
fisheye = tokina's 10-17 (for the fisheye effect on a 1.6 body)

So, this is kind of a noob question. I just picked one of these up and it's my first prime lens, as my others all have zoom factors, 17-85 mm, etc. Why does this lens have an AF and MF switch, wouldnt it always be in MF? Is the AF just kind of a locked in position once it's focused to where you want it?? Thanks for any help..

Huh? MF = manual focus, AF = auto focus. Sure, when you lock on focus in AF it stays there until you focus again...

Yea, I am just used to, when I have my other lenses on Autofocus, the lens adjusting to focus in on something (ie, I hear the lens adjust) With the prime, autofocus basically does nothing, it does not readjust if I move closer, etc...so why is it on there, am I doing something incorrectly?

Auto focus works the same on every lens - you press the shutter button halfway (or use the "*" button) and the lens focuses on your selected AF point. Are you saying the 15mm doesn't do this? It doesn't buzz and change focus? If that's the case, it's broken. ;)

The depth of field you get with such a short focal length may make it hard for you to notice changes in focus. Also the barrel won't move very far, so may produce less of a sound on focussing. It is probably working ok, but it would be best to make sure by pixel peeping shots of near and far subjects, while it's still new.

JCheungPhoto

all u need to do is focus on something close, like a foot away. Then focus on something several feet away. If you hear a whining motor-like sound your EF fisheye is working fine

yep, it's not a very new lens either. However I doubt it will be replaced in hte near future because the uses of a fisheye rarely nessesitate quick/silent focusing

Exactly... It wouldn't really matter if they never put USM in it, etc. Would it be nice? Sure. Do I care? No, not really. As it is, focusing is almost unecessary, especially stopped down. Set it to f/16 at the hyperfocal distance and just shoot away...

Love this lens--my 15mm is sharp as a tack and works for all my Canons. This shot, however is on a 1Ds Mark III and prints nicely to 17" x 25". What you see here is an 800-year-old live oak near Ormond Beach called the Fairchild Oak. Its limbs run from the trunk in the center to the edges of the frame on either side. Outside of a stitch, this is the only way to shoot the whole tree.

I've taken a lot of bad photos and some keepers with the fisheye. Not because of image quality, but because sometimes the distortion just doesn't work. Doesn't stop me from playing with it every chance I get though ;)

Here are a few pics worth noting:

Works great in tight places, like inside this ultralight airplane:
http://electricpickleonline.com/images/potn/fisheye_airplane.jpg

Or how about looking up at trees?
http://electricpickleonline.com/images/potn/fisheye_fall_colours.jpg

These ones show the curve distortion over a lake:

Nope...but, when I want to use the 15mm to be 'really' wide, I try to find a point where it's least fishy...and then can/will use CS3 to remove the little bit that may be left over. Try it out sometime...though, it's not the best option, it sorta works.

I was thinking of getting this lens but I am reading this cop factor 1.6 thing....help.

What is the crop body of my XSi ?

Madweasel

You don't have to go full frame to get fish-eye. There are now the Tokina 10-17 fish-eye zoom, the Sigma 10mm and the Sigma 4.5mm, all made for crop bodies. You can also use the Sigma 8mm and the Peleng 8mm, but for both those you'll have to crop the corners a little as they are really made to give a circular image on a full frame sensor. Fish-eye lenses of 15-16mm on a crop do not give a good effect. To see it, just imagine the central half of the images in this thread. Note that it's really out towards the corners where the effect is strongest.

FociBC
16th of November 2008 (Sun), 02:56
your absolutely correct Madweasel and this was one of the reasons I considered a ff body. I tend to prefer the canon lineup of lenses, knowing that you can get a good lens from a 3rd party I have considered this. I am also looking long term, whilst keeping realistic about my choice for what lens to buy.

-Tokina 10-17 fish-eye zoom mixed reviews from what I've gathered
-Sigma 10mm is one I'd consider
-Sigma 4.5mm hard to find any info

cheers
