^yeap. Just add a line or so of black electrical tape, and it'll keep it on. Tricky little lens cap. Oh, and congrats. :)

Well......I just folded and finally after nearly a year, clicked "buy"....Hopefully I'll have some shots to post soon.....Sorry, had to tell someone, might as well be the folks in this thread, after all, the shots posted here pushed me over the edge......
Someone tell me about the lenscap situation.....you have to tape it to keep it on?

Congrats!

I keep mine in a Canon LP811 lens pouch (the one that comes with the Canon TC's) and it works great. Lens fits in snug, and the cap can't come off so I never have to worry about it scratching the lens. :)

Manish, don't you get tape gunk on the lens barrel?
Man, kinda looking forward to getting creative with this lens, glad i have the space needle basically in my back yard:)

Nope, as I do what Tim does. Keep it in a pouch. ;) However, I beleive that the tape should be attached to the lens cap, not the lens itself, but, I've always hesitated to try it. The pouch just works for me. ;) Also, the pocket that it sits in, in my bag, keeps it snug, too.

'Tis a fun little lens, and sharp as heck. I'm sure it'll be fun for you, too. Not really an 'everyday' type of lens, but, for creativity when you need it, it can't be beat. :)

I hear you, me too. The pouch works out great for me because this lens is so small that I can usually find somewhere in the camera bag to put it, and since it's in the pouch I don't mind if that somewhere is on top of another lens, or something like that. :)

how did you get the pictures to look like this, like how the colors and the pictures themselves are clear, bright, and shiny. Or were they taken like this. I've been trying to figure this out for awhile but never knew what or where to search,so if photoshop or anything was used to make photos look like this, how do you do it?

ScootersDaddy
27th of August 2009 (Thu), 10:29
I'm certainly no expert, but I think those are probably pretty close to what you get straight out of the camera. The FE is sharp and colors look pretty faithful to the actual scene at least on my camera.

But it's a solid lens, a solid performer and has a datecode, so it resembles an L, I'm kinda glad it's not an L or I'd have had to pay another $500 for it.

Very old school. Canon recently sent me a promotional poster with all their lenses and the year they were released. The 15mm was first released in 1987. This info has probably been mentioned before in this thread, but worth rementioning. It's a great lense.

Well, I had to try it out myself. The fish-eye effect really is reduced with a cropped body (500D). Too bad, this would have been a real bargain, as it had been returned, and was about 30% cheaper than a brand new one. Well, I guess I'll start saving for a Sigma 8/3.5 EX DG or the 10/2.8 EX DC HSM, or *cough* a 5D *cough*

Probably not, in terms of the fish-eye effect. Now, a 5D vs a 50D, yeah, you would. ;)

The effect is more pronounced b/w FF and Crop cameras.

Yeap...suspect of the not so fishy look. Next time, take the car to a wide open space, at around the same time to get nice light but keep it a slight distance away, and then 'bend.' See if that helps. ;)

Here is one for comparison, with a FF camera.

OK, I gotta ask a dumb question: how come some horizons are more or less straight across, while other horizons are curved (see post 429, 487)? I think it is straight when the horizon is exactly in the center of the frame, while the horizon gets distorted when it is off the center.

I think it has to do with the 'bend' (or fisheye effect) created by a FF vs. Crop camera. Sure, you can get a horizontal that is 'almost' straight with a FF cam. at 15mm, but, that's not 'technically' what the fishy is for. :) Does that answer your question?

Oliviero
16th of October 2009 (Fri), 08:17
Totally depends on where you position the horizon in the frame. As you said, horizons which are centred tend to be flat but those at the top of the image will be convex upwards and the opposite for those positioned in the lower part of the image. This applies to anything, not just the horizon.

Madweasel

You have it right. It's to do with the geometry of the image projection of a fisheye lens. Lines that pass through the centre of the image are not bent, whereas lines that run perpendicular to one of those lines are progressively more bent as you move away from the centre of the image.

No, the image circle of the 15mm is sufficient to cover the entire 35mm-format frame. If your camera has a smaller sensor, then the 15mm is not the best fisheye to choose, as you lose a lot of the fisheye effect by cropping out the edges of the image.

Mmm perhaps I'll just use my 16-35 and crop. Saves on buying a telephoto.

I am pretty sure I tested this once and a "straightened out" 15mm fisheye is about the same as the 12mm end of the Sigma 12-24.

BUT a non-straightened out fisheye will get more stuff on the sides than the 12mm end of the sigma. So it's wider... if you don't mind the fish look... which is what this lens is about really isn't it?! :)

XTI has 1.6x crop factor. You wouldn't get the full effect of the 15mm FE on that body. I like how this image (http://digital-photography-school.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/08/full-frame-crop-factor.jpg) shows the different crops.

Yes, both 5D bodies are full frame. As are the 1Ds bodies. 1D bodies are 1.3x. Everything else is 1.6x, I guess.

Greetings. Brand new to this forum, and brand new to fisheye lenses. I'd been considering one of these for a while now, and some of the amazing images in this thread tipped me over the edge.

I love this lens.

I got it Friday after dark, and straight away took the 1st shot. It was a quick test to see how wide this thing is. Standing about 3-4 feet from a 14' wide wall -

Camera body is a D5-MKII

http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i61/rsamos/first%20fishing%20trip/ht-fished.jpg

This morning, I downloaded PTlens. While it's clear I'd want to plan the shot ahead if I'm thinking of using it this way, and I still need practice with the software - this is a great tool for what they're asking ($15) -

http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i61/rsamos/first%20fishing%20trip/ht-defished.jpg

Yesterday, I spent a bit of time at the local zoo to see what it would do. Kind of a strange lens to bring as your only glass, but it was a blast to play with.

This one's a crop (for composition) - largely I wanted to see how sharpness in this lens is. It holds up much better than I had expected. And I really liked the foreshortening affect of the close shot with the 15.

http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i61/rsamos/first%20fishing%20trip/playfull.jpg

Lastly, a couple that were I simply like the way the distortion worked for me.

The 5D body may have influence on the sharpness as well, insofar as it will utilize high-precision cross-type AF for all EF lenses that are f/2.8 or faster. Regardless, I also love playing with this Canon lens. George

I just joined the fisheye club a couple of weeks ago. Bought it and used it right away on a shoot. I was pleasantly surprised by it's operation. It focuses extremely well in low light, and it's super sharp as well!

And yes I agree, loads of fun on a FF sensor!

Here's one we shot of a couple in front of ION Shopping centre here in Singapore.

Optically, you'd think it would be! This lens is really quite sharp. But alas, just about everything else is totally NON L. It's one of the oldest continuously produced EF lenses in the lineup today, using AFD (Arc Form Drive) for AF (a.k.a. "bee in a matchbox").

Still, it's a really fun lens and delivers optically!

Geez, it must have been very dark. I wouldn't know what to do with myself on that long of an exposure.

It was quite dark. In the photo with the tree, the only light was from the stars and light pollution from nearby towns and cities (foreground illumination boosted in LR3). I walked back to my truck and surfed the 'net on my iPhone - partly from boredom and partly due to the coyotes howling in the distance being a little unnerving.

In the waterfront photo, there was foreground illumination from a dim streetlight nearby.

I honestly find that the closer you are to the subject, the more distortion, and thus, the more "intense" the effect. I can take a photo of the horizon in a wide open scene (field, sea, etc) and put the horizon dead center, and the fisheye effect is minimal. Put the horizon at the top or bottom, and the effect is MUCH stronger.
