I paired up my 5D & Canon 15MM Fisheye to try at the Udvar-Hazy Air & Space Annex at Dulles Airport. I found that if I center the subject and then crop the resulting photo at 8x4 I get very good results. I am impressed at how sharp the 15MM can be.

Here are two of my favorite "birds" the Boeing Stratoliner -- a PanAm Clipper which flew after WWII and the Concorde...note the Connie Tri-Tail as a "bonus" behind the Concorde :)

Picked this lens up last week. Got out this weekend to test it out. Some people don't like the effect it has, but I'm LOVING it. Such a fun lens to play with and worth every penny, IMO. It's friggin' wide and surprisingly sharp for not being an L class. I'm very impressed.

Since at 15mm fisheye won't give 180° diagonal angle of view on a 1.3x camera, it won't give you the view of a rectangular fisheye, if that is what you are after. It will be wide with lots of barrel distortion and let you focus very closely and still have many creative possibilities but it might not be what you want. One solution would be to buy an 8mm circular fisheye and then crop the resulting image. Any rectangle that touches the edges of the image circle will have a 180° diagonal.

I think these days most would suggest the Canon 8-15mm f/4L USM fisheye zoom which can give you the focal lengths needed for 180° diagonal or even going wider with dark corners and then cropping the desired rectangle.

Thanks a lot.I read a lot about fisheye lenses yesterday and found out that there are different focal lengths that give the 180 degree field of view on APS-C(8-10mm),APS-H(around 12mm) and full frame around 15mm.There are two options for me since Im using a 40D and will later have a 1D series body.Those are the Canon 8-15mm as you mentioned and the Tokina 10mm-17mm.Theres a price difference of almost $1,000 between the two so Im pretty sure which one Im going to pick.Thanks for the help.

They were all shot at f/2.8 - ISO 1600, on a 50D, a 1D3 and a 5D2 respectively.

Well boys, congratulations might be in order. I am going to check out one of these lenses tonight. I have had fisheye fever for a while. I found a used Spiratone 0.05x fisheye adapter lens. It has some cool history, and I will end up keeping it for that, but the image quality, easy of use, etc, can't compete with the Canon prime.

The 8-15mm FE zoom would have been nice. But it is 3x as expensive.

I have seen some really great FE shots and hope to not post any (many) cliche images as I start off.

It's a 2009 model. Practically brand new. I see what everyone is saying about the lens cap. It fell off right away.

I like the metal lens hood and cap. Much smaller, physically, than I thought. Compared to the 14mm f/2.8 prime it is a baby.

I am so used to FTM focus that it was strange not to have it. Neat how the focusing ring gets disabled when in AF mode.

I'll have to head out with this lens for some more shooting.

I have been playing around a bit. I was curious in comparing the 15mm to the EF-S 10-22. The fisheye lens has a field of view, albeit with more curvy verticals at the edges, as the 10-22 @ 12mm. On a full frame there is no comparison. :D

what i did was find a good rubber band and then taped the cap and rubber band together. so when i want the cap on i stretch the rubber band and lock it on so it doesn't fall off.

I would also like a solution that works while the lens is mounted. I was thinking of adding an extra layer of felt on the inside of the cap.

I fing it interesting that no one came up with a solution similar the the 14mm 2.8 II's lens cap. An E-bay search came up with nothing.

For now I will just have to be careful that I don't loose it.

I am also surprised that the minimum focusing distance is only 8". I thought I could get a lot closer than that. Will have to add some tubes. Wonder how that will look. :D

Don't forget minimum focus distance is normally measured from the subject to the focal plane (i.e. inside the camera body), so working distance (from the subject to the front of the lens) will be much less.

I agree with the quality of the lens. I hear they improved the lens cap design with the 14mm f/2.8. As for the Nikon style caps, you can buy that kind (even says Canon on it) via E-bay for next to nothing.

I still haven't tried modifying the cap. My full frame went into service. ERR 80.

I compared the fisheye to a EF-S 10-22. The FE has a field of view similar to the EF-S at 12mm. With slightly more curves. Not bad really. Given that it's an f/2.8 lens versus the EF-S f/3.5. I never got a chance to take any decent pictures with both to compare the overall image quality. I know the EF-S is no slouch.



I'll be heading to Fedex store tomorrow to pick up this lens up. Can't wait to check it out! :)Congrats.

I have this lens, and all I did was take a thin strip of velvet tape and line the inside lip of the lens cap. It holds the cap on snugly, and you couldn't shake the lid off if you tried. Simple, elegant and invisible.

I have this lens, and all I did was take a thin strip of velvet tape and line the inside lip of the lens cap. It holds the cap on snugly, and you couldn't shake the lid off if you tried. Simple, elegant and invisible.

Where do you get velvet tape a fabric store?

The only way I'd ever sell mine is if a Mk II version was released. The lens isn't ideal for most situations but when you find the right time/place to use it, the results can be great:

I'm not really a zoom user :) the only exception is the 17-40L I got but I like shooting with primes much more. I enjoy primes more then zooms. :)
