I say just get it. It's a specialty lens, so not everyone is going to have it like a nifty fifty, kit lens or any of the other popular zoom/prime focal ranges. It'll probably be my next lens. God knows I've put off buying it for years. Looks like a lot of fun though.

Hawg: were those cropped, or can you get them straight from the camera with no vignetting?

Hawg Hanner
16th of January 2007 (Tue), 22:21
Yes, they were cropped...but just a bit on each side. There is no vignetting with this lens on a full-frame sensor because the EF 15mm f/2.8 Fisheye shows a 180º angle of view using a rectilinear design.

jdos2
16th of January 2007 (Tue), 22:35
Here's one I took of a food court.

Choose subjects carefully, and the lens is amazing: don't, and it gets boring quickly.

And don't forget the pictures can easily be straightened.

Oh! 5D.

Miyagi-san
16th of January 2007 (Tue), 23:34
Some great examples here :)

So what would the end result look like on a 1.6x crop exactly? i mean, obviously it will be cropped a bit, but vignetting was mentioned....would this not be a great lens for a rebel?

I think I may be leaning towards the tokina 10-17....but won't be picking up a new lens till spring rolls around, to give me time to save as well as research.

the 10-17 sounds great, but the 15mm's 2.8 does sound nice :)

Hawg Hanner
16th of January 2007 (Tue), 23:55
If you truly want a fisheye look like you see above you would not be happy with this lens on a camera with a 1.6 crop factor. For that I recommend the Sigma 8mm f/3.5 EX DG or the Peleng 8mm.

jdos2
17th of January 2007 (Wed), 00:12
It's a "wide with distortion" on a crop body. Go with the above recommendations, or get a 135 sensor camera.
(if it were only that easy!)
:-)

any pics with a 1.6 crop camera?

Hawg Hanner
17th of January 2007 (Wed), 01:05
No, because it doesn't look as 'fishy' on a camera with a 1.6 crop factor. There are better alternatives. See previous posts above.

Thanks, Gene. Those are great shots. I was hoping someone would post images taken with the 1D. I broke down and ordered this lens yesterday. Have you ever corrected the distortion using DxO or PS to get a true 16mm FOV in the final image?

when I first read the post title, I thought it was asking about the much maligned 14mm f2.8. It didn't say fisheye, that's what fooled a fool like me.

Well, I wouldn't be getting FF soley for going stupid wide, but for those times I want to focus on general photography, maximize IQ, force myself to see more creatively with a single lens, and don't feel like lugging the bricks around all day. Yeah, I can do all that with a 1D, but the 5D has a special quality that has left me wanting since I traded it in for the 1D2N.

It makes a big difference whether you are using a crop body (like 400D or 30D etc.) or not (like 5D, 1Ds etc). You'll only get the full 180-degree fish-eye effect on a full-frame body.

Could you put that in noobie terms? I am getting an XTi 10.1MP. So will this lens work with my camera? Or do I need to get a 30D?

400d and 30d are both crop bodies. The lens will still work but it won't be as pronouced as on a full frame (1ds, 5d)

On the cropped sensor cameras, the 15mm fisheye will pretty much be an ultrawide angle lens...not much of a fisheye effect at all. On my 5D, I get the true fisheye effect. Not so on my 30D. For a cropped sensor, you'd want something else such as the Peleng 8mm or possible the Tokina 10-17 fisheye.

I rented the lens for a week and had it on my 5D body. I was very impressed with the lens IQ, but I could not justify spending $550 on a specialty lens. I'm shooting a wedding next month, and I might rent it again for that, but it certainly gives very good "fishy" results - paritcuarly on a FF body.

Thanks for the link. As for the price, new they're $30 different from the USA canon to the sigma at B&H. If you go with the imported canon they're $10 apart. So price isn't really that relevant, but everything else sure is. If buying used, whichever one pops up fist would probably be the one to jump on if it's $100+ less than a new one.

I've take 2 images with the 15mm FE and drawn in where it would be cropped to on a 1.3 and 1.6 body. I did this by setting the images size to 36mm x 24mm, then cropping that to 28.7mm x 18.7mm for the 1.3 and 22.2mm x 14.8mm for the 1.6. This considerably removes the fishiness of the lens IMHO because the distortion is much greater at the corners.

Anyway, it's $200 cheaper for the same results. Your call.

Why do people always mention things like this, ESPECIALLY WITH WRONG INFORMATION!?

From B&H:
Canon 15mm USA:$579.95
Canon 15mm Imp:$559.95
Sigma 15mm USA:$549.00

So regardless of what you say on the IQ differences, it's a $30 difference, NOT $200!!!

I bought the canon simply because I like their build quality a lot better than the sigma (and I've owned 4 different EX DG lenses as well as 2 TCs).

No need to shout - I can hear perfectly thanks.

The Newegg page for the Canon said $600-ish.

I looked at Sigma4less at the the Siggy and it said $400-ish - but I looked at the wrong one. I looked at the Minolta. My bad, I apologise to the OP.

Smelling a rat I went back and looked again and the Canon version is there at $480-ish

Now 600 - 480 = uhhhhh ..... waitaminnit .... ummm .... carry the 1 ...... $120!!

If you'd like me to shout it to get my point across - just ask

No I'd like you to make valid comparisons. Sigma4less charges a ton for shipping and their lenses don't come with US warranties. I have ordered from them before, but don't anymore for reasons I won't get into here. It's not a valid comparison to quote different prices from different vendors. I'm all for substituting sigma lenses when it makes sense and I save a large percentage of the money, but it's certainly not $300 different(which would be more than half) of the original price on the canon.

I just find it humorous you're quoting newegg on the canon (a typically high source for camera gear) and sigma4less for the sigma (the lowest price you'll find online for sigmas, but with twice the shipping and not the same warranty). It's obvious you don't like the canon.

I only went to Sigma4less because because Newegg don't sell the Siggy. Conversely, I believe that Sigma4less don't sell the Canon.

Where did the $300 dollars you quote come from ?

I quoted Newegg because the OP did.

I quoted Sigma4less because they are well known and, well, sell Sigmas for less........

I'm glad you find it humorous, but it's not real big on my agenda.

Warranties and shipping, well whatever. If you know somewhere cheaper tell the OP not me.

If you read my signature it's obvious I do like Canon - it's just not obvious to you.

Shall we let the OP have his thread back ?

This brings up interesting point. I am planning on getting the 5d, and wanted to get the 15 fisheye too. I do have a Tamron, 11-18...wouldn't that be redundant?
There is quite a difference between a rectilinear image and a fish-eye one, so the ultrawide would not be redundant for that reason, but it WOULD be redundant on a 5D where the wider end of the zoom range would heavily vignette through too small an image circle.

don't do it!!!
The 15mm FE is so much wider than a 14mm... It's wider (and more fun) than my sigma 12-24mm was at 12mm... You need some sort of UWA zoom IMHO. Didn't you have the 16-35 previously? The 14mm is just too expensive for me.

nope, and I doubt you can. I'll try my Cokin x-pro CP the next time I have both out. I use a 5D with a custom image style (I shoot JPEGs 99% of the time) then very mild PP.

I'd strongly recommend the Canon 15mm fish...very fast focusing, and pretty darn sharp from corner to corner. I posted a shot of Horseshoe Bend on page 8 of this thread (don't know if you saw it...for some reason I had to repair the link earlier today). That was taken on a 5D...you'll probably get a slightly reduced FE effect on the 1.3.

I'll see what I can dig up tomorrow, but personally get the 17-40mm first. Another option is the sigma 12-24mm as the 12mm end is very similar to the 15mm, just without the crazy distortion. The FE is a gimic for sure, you have to pick your shots wisely. The 17-40mm is my daily lens.

The biggest difference will be that the 17-40 isn't fisheye, i.e. straight lines appear straight with the 17-40, they don't with the 15 (unless they are absolutely through the dead centre of the frame)

The 15 is a LOT wider too, but the straight line distortion is the biggest thing IMO;)
