For my 400D on a tripod. I understand about 'Mirror Lock-Up' and what it does. I am not sure what happens when using a cable release.
Do I first have to set up the focusing etc. using the half-pressed shutter button or is this all taken care of with the cable release?
Any tips on using a cable release would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

The cable release should have exactly the same functions as your shutter button, press half way for focusing etc, and all the way to take the shot. Some have a lock for long exposures, so you don't have to keep your thumb on it. ;)

If you use CFn.4-1, the cable release will only fire the shutter. I prefer to focus myself using the * button and then only have the cable release fire the shutter to avoid vibration.

The Custom Functions are a whole new ball-game. I haven't looked at them very closely, but I see there are some very useful settings hidden away there. Using the * button to focus, will I still be able to use the mirror lock-up as well?
The end result (I hope) will be a few half-decent HDR images. Thanks for the tip scottberger.

If you've enabled Mirror-Lockup under custom functions, then fire off the first shot with your cable release (this will slap the mirror up), wait about 5 seconds for any vibrations to disapate, then fire again.to open the shutter.
Remember to lock the cable release in if you are in Bulb Mode!
I have no idea about using the * button to focus though.. I thought this was an exposure lock button? Shows my noobiness I guess.

CFn. 4-1 moves focusing to the * button. The shutter button then only controls the exposure. It shouldn't interfere with the mirror lock up.
