With big shoots coming up? I know I haven't been shooting for too long(only a few years), but I still get nervous with any big shoots, but then I guess I get nervous easily in general. So maybe its just a general thing.
But I figure its a good question to ask. :p I was inspired to ask since i have a big shoot coming up today(Tuesday) at UCLA. A portrait of Aaron Afflalo. I know its not going to be a long time I have to get it done, and so I got to think on the run. So it just adds the pressure. So that's my most recent example.
So anyone get nervous.

I get totally excited and sick to my stomach.. I can't sleep for dreaming of shots..this is mostly with weddings or bridals. The night before my last wedding I dreamed I fell over the balcony during the ceremony and knocked out an old family relative....and broke my camera, which nobody seemed to care about.... It was so weird because I'm not that insensitive, I would have made sure the granny was ok before I cried over my own gear :)

Still get excited after all these years. I notice that I develop a heightened sense of detail. Checking and rechecking gear and setup allows for thinking about what is needed to get the shot.
I develop a rough plan"B" in case of unexpected changes in anything.

I get very meticulous with details and before hand I like to make myself slightly sick to the stomach worrying about the endless 'what if' scenarios.. But, the camera has a calming effect on me and I tend to go composition by composition.. I still wonder about those concerts that I shot and what the heck the musicians played..

I never get nervous. But thats probably just because I just shoot for myself
Now if I get media access to shoot for Copenhagen Historical Grand Prix this year then I might get nervous.

Well to update my situation. It went fairly well. I think I'm happy with what I got and can't wait to see it in print Thursday.

Been shooting for clients for over 30 years now...never really got nervous...but certainly get excited about shoots...and like Jon mentioned...always look to have a contingency plan for those unexpected little speed bumps in the road to success.

Ohh i defintely agree. I noted down on a notepad locations i wanted to use that i scoped out as i walked around before Aaron showed. The first one didn't work so i scraped it. Second worked perfectly. Took some time.
I had two bodies with me, so I defintely made sure of that. Charged batteries day before. Looked over great portraits by other photographers. Did my homework so to speak.

Everything mentioned is all part of that ambiguous question that pops up now and then...."what makes a pro".
Just getting money for images doesn't put you in that catagory.

I get excited and can't sleep the night before!! I'm pretty new at doing shoots. I have one tomorrow night. I got hired to do "AAA" basketball photos!! I'm really looking forward to it!! So I'm sure that tonight I wont sleep and double check and triple check my gear and make sure that everything is ready to go!!

What excites me is coming home and taking out the CF and putting it in the card reader. Never fails. Can be any subject any shoot, no matter what time it is, morning or night, I gotta come in and pop that card in to see what Kind of images I got. Then I finish up what I need to do and then go to bed! Ha Ha. Just like a little kid.
