I am upgrading my pc's ram to two GB, but do find prices of 1GB rammemory quite high (212us$). Is it wise to wait in the hope that prices go down?

Prices go up, they come down all the time although $212 US sounds very gigh. A quick look around the web showed that the average price for a gig is a bit over $100. Are you looking for a specific type of memory, maybe a more expensive type?

Without knowing exactly what you need and what computer that you have, I would say that it should only cost $100-150 USD.
Of course, with you being in Oslo, your prices might be higher.

The only problem is that I just checked and NewEgg doesn't ship internationally.
If that is your correct location, Oslo, then you might know someone who can send it to you.
You mught also check crucial.com.

RAM seems to be one of those commodity items, almost floating up and down in price like the market. As new plants come on line, or shortages appear, the price responds accordingly.

It's wise to wait if you don't have to upgrade right now. Prices goes down in a span of like 4-6 months. I'm assuming you have 1 gig right now and planning to get the same exact 1 gig ram right. When you upgrade/buy ram it must be the same memory/brand/model as what you have right now if not, mixing 2 diff brands/models, you can have boot problems. May i ask what ram you have right now? Good brands on ram are OCZ,Gskill, Patriot, Corsair,Crucial....

You have to look at the value based on time. RAM prices fluctuate but not all that much. It might be $110 today and drop to $100 in a few months, but is a $10 savings worth waiting for say 3 months? That’s ~ $1 a week. So ask yourself, is the added Ram going to improve my productivity, make my life better by ~ $1 a week? If so then why wait. Upgrade now.
But if your buying it on a whim, just because, with no specific problem in mind that’s a different story and you might want to wait until prices drop. Last time RAM prices fell, I choose to upgrade 2 of my machines just because prices were low even though I at the time did not need more RAM.
Secondly, RAM is a very misunderstood commodity. Many believe that by increasing RAM, they will get more performance. This is not always true. The only time you will see an increase in performance is if you have enough applications open and are bumping up to your RAM limit and are paging. If your not paging, then more RAM will do nothing. Also, there are free programs that you can run which will free RAM and monitor usage. You might try one of those first such as FreeRAM XP pro (http://www.yourwaresolutions.com/software.html#framxpro). It costs nothing and does a great job managing your memory.

Thank you for all the advice, as so often on this forum. To check up the Crucial site was a good hint. I saved a lot there - they charge US$144 for 1GB as compared to Kingstons US$208. It's also limited lifetime warranty so I think I'll go for that.
It's true that I currently have 1GB ram on my laptop and thought that would be enough and some more when I bought it. They say that delivery time is about 3-5 days and that's not bad at all!
This is not something imminent, meaning it happens next week, but my HD is about to bust (40GB) and I thought it makes sense to upgrade both ram and hd at the same time as you have to open the interior of the laptop, but the job is quite simple.
Again, thanks to all of you!
