Hey guys title explains it all. I have no idea what a softbox does and was wondering. Any help is appreciated.

It diffuses the light, which in turns softens (even eliminates in some cases) the shawows. there are different configurations which all serve to control the lightbeam in some way.

Glad they don't make LOUD boxes! Soft-meaning, make the light softer. :) ;)

Big light source = soft, diffuse light, soft shadows. Cloud covered sky = soft, diffuse light, no shadows

Softbox = controlled soft light; umbrella = uncontrolled spill, soft light

Softbox= rectangular catchlights in the eye that can be made to mimic window panes. Umbrella= octagonal catchlights in the eye (and ribs) that cannot be made to mimic anything in particular.
