I've got a Novatron kit. It has 2 45" white umbrellas. I'll generally put one about 45 degrees off center and the key light less. The soft box is stored elsewhere so it isn't available.
I've been reading on firing through the smaller white umbrellas, such as a 32 inch or so. I understand the concept, but haven't really played with lighting so much to get the master effect down.
What I need to know is this. If I shoot about 8 feet away from the subject with the 45", how much difference is there in how the light is thrown when the umbrella is the farthest distance from the light vs if I move it closer. And how do others mount them?
Let's say these are firing at 250 watts each.
If I use the 32" umbrellas with the lights, same wattage and same distance, how much difference is there?
The last shoot I did, I was about 8-10 feet off with the lights at 250w on the power pack, ISO 100 and F6.3. The umbrellas were extended away from the light itself, bouncing and not firing through.
Input and help is appreciated.
