Thanks Greg and Paul :D
I used a little bit of healing brush, duplicated the layer, gaussian blurred it then used a mask and various brush opacities to paint it on.
No studio lights, but I had a warm light above and the left of my face. :)

This is going to look so dodgy and crap, even with the website builder. I think I've wasted my money. Should have just paid someone to do it.

Good to see you are moving forward Kinnon, maybe slowing but you'll get there one way or the other. Don't remind me too much how cr@ppy the front end of my Genealogy web site looks. I looked at the blog front end WordPress a few weeks ago but didn't install it.

Had a think about this post on the way to work, and kinda think it came out a bit wrong...
I left out a bit at the start sorta along the lines of... you'll get there.. keep playing...
Have you thought of trying a web publishing tool? Makes life very much easier... such as Dreamweaver etc? Much simpler and makes web design a bit like glorified word processing. Applications like MS Word can do it too, but the code that eventuates from the conversion tends to be somewhat messy.
Greg... wordpress is quite nice and very simple to install. I like movable type too for blogging. I was also thinking of creating a blog type site, but found that I wouldn't type much stuff so it defeated the purpose of having a blog as my front end heheh :)

That's part of my reason for not doing it yet either. The theme I have on my carlill site is one I designed myself maybe 10yrs ago. Looked ok then, maybe:oops:, but not now. Oh well another item on the things to do list.

Had a quick skim through. Definitely would've looked AWESOME back 10 years ago. It's only because the style of sites has changed so much that our expectations are so much higher.
Just a note that your Family History link on the front page (not the side menu) isn't working... still pointing to your steadyhands place. ;)
Maybe we should have a webdesign workshop at the same time as the workflow workshop :D and everyone can share ideas and design tips :)

Well about 2am this morning I got the sh*ts with the web builder and ended up doing my home page through microsoft frontpage. Pretty happ with the results, I was able to do what I wanted which was something plain and simple, which the web builder wasn't letting me do.
I tried to up load the file on here so everyone could have a sticky beak but it wouldn't let me upload a htm file. Bugger.

should check out Dreamweaver if you get the chance... :)
Could take a screenie of the front page, and upload it ;) or just up it into a sub directory on your host.
Geez I'm tired :( I should've taken the public holiday today :(

I think we have dreamweaver somewhere. But I think I'll stick to the "KISS" technique (keep it simple stupid).
For some reason a little while ago all our accesories disappeared like paint and the games. The only way I know how to take a screen shot is by pasting it in paint?

Hehe, I don't use any programs, I do all the coding by hand. Gives me more control and I can do heaps...
Then again, I've got about 4 or so years of experience.

What you could do is do an "Alt-PrintScreen" and then pasting straight into photoshop. That'd work too... but yeah... Definitely KISS is great. Mine are classic examples of this ;) I don't use any server technologies except a tiny bit of php... but even then that's real basic fundamental stuff...

I'm much the same... I remember when I used to work process with tags etc... mmm typesetting... I use dreamweaver for litereally a live preview (using the split set up) and then code in the code section. Just lazy to keep hitting refresh ;) heheh...
Maybe we need an HTML demonstration from Kelsey-Lee :) heheh

my god, i leave you guys for a few days, and i have to read pages upon pages of stuff!!
Kinnon, when you have found the best price on the net, ring up photocontinental, tell them what price you found it for, and what can they do it for, and you will get yourself a good bargain. I also think you should go with a proper monitor instead of a laptop. I know greg does his images on the laptop, and they come out very very good, but i won't do mine on my laptop, i use the monitor. In fact, i am going shopping tomorrow for another monitor that i can link to my laptop to do my post processing. I have heard from several places, including kayell labs, that a monitor is better than a laptop. And today is the public holiday, not the 14th.
Well, here is my BIG news!! Home from seqacc,...south east queensland amateur club competition (or something like that). 14 clubs competed (only one person from bcg though, what is with them?) about 1200 entries, with the cutoff for acceptances being about 25-30%. I came home with 8 acceptances, 5 merits, a second place, two first places, and chamption b grade dpi. To say i am over the moon is an understatement, as this is a very big deal at camera club level. paul, justin, kelsey, why didn't you guys enter? You have some very good stuff.

Ummm....diorrhea? :D Just kidding. Don't really know much about SEQACC...besides...I'm not real big on competitions.
But you're right about editing on a good monitor Tina. If you can afford it, get an EIZO Coloredge 21. It's a professional standard editing monitor. If you can't stretch to that cost, the next best is the NEC 2190UX. Much less cost.

I guess effective websites don't necessarily have to be "Flash"... they can just be effective by being simple to navigate, nice blend in colours... effectively serving the purpose... don't need the "WOW" factor to be effective :)

I don't really know. I got my camera bag from there, they had a very good range. a friend of mine had an issue with a lens he bought from them, it was swapped without any problems. and they do sell filters etc
haha greg, had you entered your eagle, it probably would have won!

Oh my I had a big weekend.
Saturday
Work. No photos (naturally ;))
Buddha Birthday Festival - 32 photos (incl. fireworks). Had to buy some sticky tape to keep the camera on my tripod as I left the head at home. My, that was fun. :p
Sunday
Cameraholics Fair. Only stayed for half an hour - lots of good stuff but nothing there for my EOS film camera (all available lenses weren't for EF systems). There were some good-looking Leicas but for $600 minus the lens...
Train Show - 15 photos. Gave my telephoto a good workout.
Buddhist B'day Festival Lion Dance - 3 photos
Caxton St "Seafood" Festival - Saw Little Birdy play live. Didn't take any shots as I was too far back, the stage was too low and everybody else seemed to be taller than I am. I left when they finished their set.
Today
Train Show - 31 photos - 14 from one layout and 9 from another. Both of these layouts had interesting features and viewpoints which given the right moment and locomotive would make for a extremely good shot. Let's hope they turn out as good as I think they are :p
Labour Day March - 13 photos. I have my own special vantage point where you can get shots from a good angle, above the fence and without having to leave the train show pavillion. :p
I was told by a fellow QSMEE member how to push film - a technique I had heard about and that I want to try, and he's going to photocopy his manual of a similar model (a EOS 300) as mine didn't come with a manual when I bought it.
All in all it was a good weekend, the only downside being Caxton St - and the fact that I feel exhausted :p When's the Ekka? :p

Yes, too true. I got into the web as a part of my other hobbie, Genealogy. Web sites are a great way to share your family history and it's surprising the number of unknown distant relations that find me from my web site. It's strange but my genie web site is usually targeted at a much older audience. I've always been a bit of an old one out when it come to Genealogy:oops: research, it's mostly done my retirees.
I've been into for almost 20yrs, well on and off at least. Haven't done as much active research in the last few years since the kids came along and now I'm back into the photography thing again. It's a hobby that the advent of the web has made a huge difference too.
haha greg, had you entered your eagle, it probably would have won!
Honestly it wouldn't have Tina, though the head shot is amost identical yours has a much nicer Bokeh, just a slightly different angle can make a world of difference.

Some of you may have seen this shot before. I took this back in October last year and it suddenly has a whole new level of meaning. My grandfather depicted here in this shot passed away today. Even back then I was (and still am) immensely pleased I took this. It was a candid I snapped during a family BBQ and I managed to catch the essence I how I remember him. My only regret is that I was going to take some shots of him and my grandmother together this Mothers day. So don't put off those family shots. We shared an interest in photography and he still had all of his Ricoh 35mm gear. He was 2mths shy of 85.

Anyone up for a Kangaroo Pt photo night one Monday or Tuesday night? (I normally work Mon nights but can change it if needed). After looking at some sunset/magic light photos recently I want to get out and have some fun.

Mmm what are we doing. 3rd June is Photoshop etc talk at Moorooka, we also never finalised an Oz Zoo trip, was to be for 19 or 20 May. I remember Paul and Ken are in NZ, Tina wasn't going, other than that my memory is soft and spongy.
I'm double booked for that Tuesday night as it is now. Oh well.

Uhm... I checked the first page of this thread. There weren't any details... do you mean the other events thread (the drought/Australia zoo one)?
I thought I'd have a read of the earlier posts on this thread before I came along. I found two things of note:
I was out your way late yesterday --- we had a blow up of the little transformer that supplies just the substation and a small part of the shops. I was out the there to sus out the replacement.
You were referring to Paul, I think. Greg, I recall the odd mention of standby shifts. Do you by any chance work for Energex?
Don't worry about shooting film, I started off with a 3000n and its a great camera.
I also recalled someone saying they had one after I had posted the first time. I'm after a copy or even a short loan of a manual - is there any chance you'd still have it? =)

Yep, for more than 20yrs, sad hey. Na, great place to work. I am rostered 1 in 5 during the storm season to assist at our control centre when storms hit. Was a very quiet storm season this year, 2 calls. Normally I do electrical design work, designing the circuitry in the large substations you see around the place.

Hi folks, just discovered this thread! I'll keep an eye on it for upcoming outings. I mostly do motorsports photography, but am always keen to try other 'types'. Landscape and wildlife are also keen areas of interest. I've been wanting to get up to O'Reilly's for far too long, so maybe that could be something we might organise one day!
I'm on the northside - Aspley.

Hi Gerard, welcome to our little part of POTN. Of course you have read all 106 preceding pages of this haven't you?;) I love O'Reilly's, the birds up there are amazing, as are some of the views. If you check here and in the Aussie thread you'll see there are some subliminal influences around that cause people to lust after more photography gear. Better watch out!!
Speaking of birds;) I've just posted a couple of shots here (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?p=3182181#post3182181). I guess this is going to just reinforce some peoples view about those subliminal influences.

@ Greg - How bizarre. My dad has been at Energex for something near or above 25 years (i think). He does standby too, though more on mobile generators and such. He's on standby quite often, not just in storm season though. When he's not doing that I think he does EWP (and other vehichle/machinery) electrical testing. Or at least that's where I think he is... ;) Which depot/workshop/place (I've forgotten the correct term) do you work at?
@Helen - The 3000N manual is only in German (AFAIK), but the 3000V one told me all I should need to know. Thanks for the link. :)

Ahh, your dad works out of Banyo then? I'm in the head office in Charlotte St these days. Been in the city for the last 10yrs, before that I worked out of the Valley Substations depot and left them just a few months before they relocated. I did notice a familiar face on the track day, I'm now guessing this is your dad.

The first 5 were made with Kodak Portra 400VC, the last three were made with Kodak BW400CN. Because BW400CN is C-41 (not true monochrome), they have a green tinge to them, which was fixed using Fred Hunt's method of converting to monochrome (basically, using only one colour channel instead of all three).

Mmm, I have 2x Canon T70's sitting around, one of which is the first SLR I bought (1988 ), both have issues. Also have a small, yes I do mean small, collection of FD lenses. I also have a EOS IX (go on, look it up!!) floating around.
Phew, what a day yesterday, grandfather's funeral and all that. The photo I posted earlier featured prominently during the service and I received comments from all of my cousins, aunts and uncles about how much it encapsulated how they remembered him. Makes me feel even better about that shot.
Got to catch up with my all of my cousins. We don't often all get together in the one place these days. Also found a few new models;), this is my cousins boy. That whole side of the family has those big blue eyes.

Just came back ...
I did my errands of food shopping LOL. And again ... I do not leave my camera alone of course.
So, I took pictures of old but beautiful buildings. I went the St John's Cathedral again. Isnt it a beauty ... so stunning inside ...
Why dont we all make houses like that LOL ... No need to go out anymore
I also experimented with white balance and exposure settings. Being a noob, I am just doing the trial and error things at the moment ....
I was planning to try night/sunset photography of the bridge but I was caught up with the shopping. My timing wasnt good. I forget Winter's nights come too early ... Hence, I have to wait for another time. Maybe an old kinda thing, compare the sunrise and sunset pics of the bridge. Not sure I can manage at the moment though ...
What have u been up to ? Tomorrow is a quite at home kinda thing ... but been waiting for caccoon of my caterpillar to hatch ... if I have not disturbed it often enough to stress him/her so it would not come out ever. I read somewhere some might stay until Spring ? what that long ???
Hope it does not wait for that long ... it seems to turn brown and brittle enough to come out soon though ...
Feng, hope yours have been great like everyone else too ... enjoy tomorrow ... you might bring your Mum a nice big of your most favourite photo perhaps ???

I think what is long is the custom. Items got held at custom for checking etc.
You might be surprised to get it early ... they might give you the least favourable time LOL.

Definitely broadening my knowledge of Photoshop, at least a little bit. Alot of work with Channels and Selections. There are thousands of birds around throughout the day too, so I'm definitely taking my camera tomorrow.

I made it to NZ in one piece. Everything people have said to me about how photogenic Queenstown and surrounds are, is absolutely true. It's a photographer's paradise.
Here's the view from our hotel (well across the street anyway)...

I hope it comes out okay. I had to process it on this dinky little laptop of mine and the monitor is less than perfect.
I surely love the serene look of this picture. Great stuff ! Need to prepare for myself for NZ trip too.
Thanks

Helen, if it weren't for work I would've come along just for a bit of a walk.
Kelsey, nice portrait - I'm a bit of a fan of the washed-out look in some photos too.
Lovely shot, Paul. I didn't realise the trip was so soon either. Hope to see plenty from you upon your return (or sooner).
I like the cityscape, Luke. Very colourful. How many exposures did you use?

nice shot luke. It is a little blown out in areas though, maybe another try at hdr so it is a little darker?

I made the hugest impulse buy on friday...... I bought a laptop! I went into the shop and it was just sitting there waiting for me, exacly what I wanted and for the price I wanted!
I've only just got the internet working on it and I've been able to look at some of my photos on photobucket and also look at the people's photos on here and all I can say is wow!
I've only just realised how crap my old monitor really is. I knew it was bad, but not THAT bad. So now my next purchase is going to be a monitor for my comp!

Uploaded it today. Noticed a few mistakes that I'll have to fix up and I also had a problem with godaddy so there's a huge advertising banner above my site that I will have to get rid of.
It didn't turn out too badly. Nice and simple. When I'm actually making money out of my photography I'll pay someone to make me a decent one!

nice impulse :D sounds like something I'd do ;) hahahah
um... i quite like the front look of your site... clean cut...
thing I don't like is the ad at the top :( I realise it's free. I can offer you hosting on my vps if you like (and don't do too much throughput ;)) Flick me a PM if you're interested... and anyone else in BNE POTN.
edit: just saw your post... what was the problem with GoDaddy? Do they usually offer free hosting bannerless?

Welll....what's happened with godaddy is when I got the package ($180 aus worth) I got the website builder with it but I couldn't do what I wanted to do so I just built my own through front page. When I went to upload it it said In couldn't because I was using the website builder.
I deleted the website builder from my account so i could upload what I want but it ended up deleting my whole account. So that's why it says I'm hosting it for free, even though I have already paid to have it hosted for 12 months.
So I've sent an e-mail to the tech team at godaddy and hopefully they'll be able to reinstate my account, otherwise that was one expensive mistake

Oh I didn't realise you were paying that sorta money for hosting... otherwise I would've got you to just rego your domain and chuck it on my vps while you're developing it... until you're ready.... Drat!
anyways... either way... hope you get it sorted with godaddy... and if they can't sort it (which I doubt... they're pretty good), then flick me a PM, and I'll hook you into my VPS... so you can just upload what you've created in FP, and redirect your domain over to my vps... that way... for you won't lose out for your money ;)

Good job, just shooting the city at night from there when you are after a normal shot is pretty difficult. This (http://www.flickr.com/photos/-spam-/377378371/in/set-72157600203664206/) was my best attempt.

Rightio, well I've heard back from godaddy and they've actually been really helpful.
The fellow I 'spoke' to said he was going to contact the credit department to see if he can refund my money. That's a lot better than what I was hoping for, I just thought I was going to have to write of nearly $200
