I like the cityscape, Luke. Very colourful. How many exposures did you use?

There is only 2 shots there.

so what happens when they refund it? You just figure out what you're going to do??? do you get to keep your domain?

-Pleiades-
13th of May 2007 (Sun), 08:37
I didn't think about my domain. I guess I can just re-register that.

I'll probably end up hosting with them again, seeing as though they were nice enough to refund the money for me when they really didn't have to.

wakko
13th of May 2007 (Sun), 08:50
sure...

alternatively, you could register your domain with them... and if you like, I can give you free hosting on my vps for you to play...

access is by ftp, and you can log into a control panel to adjust your DNS settings and email redirects etc. Also have pop mail and redirection if you like.

I'm sorry Feng, I don't understand any of that stuff. Probably how I got myself into trouble in the first place.

How cool, just got an e-mail from godaddy saying my money has been refunded. :D

wakko
13th of May 2007 (Sun), 09:40
heheheh

that's ok... I'll try break it down a bit...

When you apply for hosting with a domain name they give you (effectively) the following;

1. Domain Name
2. Space and quote to store files (web page)
3. Some form of email system (redirection or hosting)
4. control of all of that.

What GoDaddy would've given you (with sitebuilder) would've been:

1. Domain Name
2. Space to host (where you uploaded your web page)
3. Not sure how GoDaddy does this, but they must if they host your domain, forward it's emails to some address (probably your personal one)... i.e. *@yourdomain.com)
4. Sitebuilder access, and then effectively publishing via frontpage, or FTP (file transfer protocol).

What I can provide you, is all except the domain registration. I'm happy to step you through the basics over the phone if you like (can give you my mobile or whatever, and/or call you back so you don't have to pay).

What you'd do is:

1. Register domain name and 'park' it.
2. I'll set up your domain info into my vps (virtual private server).
3. Set up basic domain name services and hosting logins.
4. Step you through creating a custom name server which would point to my server.
5. Teach you to log into the server to 'publish' your files.
6. Show you how to log in, and set up email boxes etc for *@yourdomain.com

Pretty basic stuff really... and you can have it free for your playing around.

Once you're ready to go commercial, then that's when you have to decide whether you want to pay someone else to host (in which case, we just redirect your name servers etc with GoDaddy), or you pay me a nominal fee to continue hosting it (with invoice etc of course).

In the interim, you can continue to use it free, for as long as you like, as long as you don't generate heaps of traffic (which you won't for private photo hosting etc).

Did that help? :| If not, I can PM you my mobile and we can have a chat (i suck at describing while typing as I tend to ramble) :)

<endramble>

:)

Oh that's great. I have all my .com/.org etc emails registered with GoDaddy :) Just have my own server so don't need to host it there ;)

Rightio, well I've been having a play in photoshop and I've been trying to come up with some business card designs.

Please let me know what you REALLY think. These two designs I'm thinking are just a front and back design for one card.

Is it too hard on the eyes, not enough info, too much, or just crap?

You did help heaps Feng, I understood what you wrote!

I just don't want you going to any trouble for me and I don't want to be a hassle.

The reason why I'm doing the web page and business cards at the moment is the lady who bought my business runs a dog school and shows her dogs in the different comps around the place. She wants me to come to dog school and the comps then take photos of the dogs then sell them to people.

She said she's hired a prof photog in the past, but she said I'm welcome to come along whenever I want! Hence the reason for the webpage, cards and new camera gear.

I figure once I'm there, take photos of peoples dogs, hand them the card, they look on the webiste and order some prints.....

Good in theory, wonder how it'd be in practice!

wakko
13th of May 2007 (Sun), 09:52
The card looks great....

My little tip is... (and take it how you want)... leave one side with some white space (maybe the back?) so people can write somewhere if they want... if you dont' want that, then it's fantastic the way it is.

It's not hassle, and you're welcome to it. For the mean time while you're learning the ropes, you're more than welcome, and if I didn't want to help out, I wouldn't have offered. I don't yes or no ;)... after a couple of weeks, when you've learnt the ropes, then you can always transfer off to another hosting provider... even back to GoDaddy.

Ahhh...I dunno....

I just had a closer look at the godaddy invoice and the refunded part (most) of my money. What they didn't refund was the domain registration and some kind of photo filer I also signed up for.

Maybe I should just stick with godaddy?

How does the economy or deluxe plan look at godaddy? https://www.godaddy.com/gdshop/hosting/shared.asp?app%5Fhdr=&ci=5652

Is that what I want/need? :S

wakko

mmm tough call there... both are so cheap.

in my experience, 5G is hard to fill with just photos set up for the web.

250G traffic is a lot, but when you go commercial.... mmmm even then... if you only plan to do the one site, and stuff from there, then even the economy plan is enough.

The deluxe does offer 'photo galleries' whatever that difference is :|

Not too sure to be honest ;)

Hi Kinnon, from memory, the best my site every did traffic wise was about 10G. This was when the 30D came out and I had some of the first shots available. Most of my traffic is from links here on POTN, and usually never goes past about 3G. I only have s very small number of visitors to my gallery. I only have about 120M of storage and I'm getting close to that limit now.

Mind you, at this stage my site is not for business, just pleasure. I can recommend the Gallery software my site uses. It is called Coppermine and is dead easy to install and use.

Cheers Greg. I'm not expecting a huge number of visitors...yet!

Album was my next question. Tim on the wedding forum recommended JAlbum, and it's free. What about Coppermine, is that free? Did a quick google of it and couldn't find any prices on their page, must be a good sign!

Yep, free, free, free.... Heaps of themes that are easy to apply also.

Came in a kit that could be installled from the admin part of my web page.
There were these three:-

The web management tool called Fanstaico (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fantastico_%28web_hosting%29) is used to installl it and all of this is done access through cPanel (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CPanel) - the Control Panle Module.

I don't know what GoDaddy offer in regards to this, or how Feng's VPS does it. A lot will depend on the operating system the server is running.

Geez, if only I knew what I was getting myself into with all the web business.... It's so confusing!

I sorted out godaddy last night so there is no longer an ugly advertising banner above my site. I've just downloaded jalbum and I'll do the same with coppermine and which ever is easiest to play with I'll use.

Then Feng (or Greg) you may have some questions come your way like how I upload it and attach it to my site..... :S

Hi again everyone. Phew! It's hard to keep up with you guys. Kinnon. I like your card as is, but if you think wedding photography is where your income will mostly come from, perhaps think about putting a bridal photo on the card...you know...of an actual bride or bride/groom combination. Perhaps do what Feng said and put a nice portrait fading off into blank space on the back to allow room for clients to write. I'm looking forward to seeing some of your wedding shots...you brave person. :-D

Shhhh! I'm not actually an Engineer .... Proper term is an Engineering Associate as I have an Associate Diploma + Trade, not a B.Eng. I don't really care what I'm called, but some of the Engineers used to get upset when we were called Engineers.:p No value in me doing a B.Eng as I can earn the same money as some of our Engineers. Trouble is, I've pretty much reached the ceiling as far as things go. I could possibly go higher but the vast majority of positions above me are Management (yuck!) and not Technical. That's the thing with a B.Eng, it would take 6 years to do part time and then you'd move into Management and I'm more of a Technical person.

We are always looking for people in our design office. :D;) Trouble is the pay is a little s*cky down in lower pay scales. We have had quite a few with Electronics Degrees come and work in our area as CAD operators, usually to get a foot in the door. A lot of the guys are doing lots of overtime to make up for it, but it kinda kills your home life.

Cheers Paul. No weddings in the near future. Once I get a job and know what kind of roster I will have I'm going to send an e-mail around to the local wedding photogs and see if I can go as second shooter with them and gain some experience from it before I jump in the deep end.

So at the momet my cards aren't really targeted at wedding photography. I'm not even sure if I'll keep it on there because if I do hand out the cards and someone comes up to me and says "my son is getting married in a few months time, can you shoot his wedding" I will have no idea what to do or say.

The cards are just mainly for the dog school and shows, but also a generic kinda thing. I'll probably get about 500 printed up and when I finally do get into wedding photography I'll have a dedicated business card (and even website) for it with bridal pictures on it ;)

Once I get a job I hope to buy a domain and set-up a proper website, but for now I'll just play around.

wakko
14th of May 2007 (Mon), 19:47
Hi Kinnon.

Who are you mainly targeting with these cards? Weddings? Portraiture? If so, you should probably (like tina and greg said) have wedding couple shot or something, and a portrait? The moon is a great shot, but just thinking the card should target who you aim to target in terms of expected audience.

-Pleiades-
14th of May 2007 (Mon), 19:55
That's the thing though, I'm not really targeting anyone or anything at the moment. I just want to get my name out there. At the moment I'd be happy if people visit my gallery on the website (when I get it up and running) and bought prints off it of my work.

When I jump head first into photography I'll definatley have a more specific business card and website but at the moment I'm just trying to keep it general and simple.

I had another play with the card last night and took off the 'wedding' part. I'm really not ready for it at the moment and when I get into weddings I'll specificially designed wedding cards.

Hey guys. I found that the hotel has an email/internet computer in the lobby that costs $2 for 20 mins instead of the $30 for 30 mins by connecting in my room. Can't upload photos though.:-( There is a USB thingy here on the computer but when I plugged the Epson P3000 into it, it made rude NZ gestures at me and told me to "pees orf"! mmm, what was I going to say. mmm. oh yes. My foray out to Nudgee on Sunday as well as seeing these gorgeous images - Kah Kit Yoong (http://www.pbase.com/kahkityoong) and the book by Galen Rowell that I picked up at Borders the other day (Inner Game of Outdoor Photography (http://www.amazon.com/Galen-Rowells-Inner-Outdoor-Photography/dp/039304985X)), has finally pushed me over the 2 years I have spent umming and ahhing over getting some graduated neutral density filters. lol @ littleporkers!

I'll have a brainstorm...

wakko
15th of May 2007 (Tue), 02:34
yeah ta... as with everyone else if you come up with any ideas.

the idea is... get some generic domain that I'll pay for for 10 years and actively renew... I'll then give whoever is interested a email pop3 address or redirect (which ever you like)... i.e. someusername@justmessingabout.org or something like that... which can redirect or act as a proper server mailbox. Then give that same user a subdomain http://someusername.justmessingabout.org/ so they can host whatever... and load galleries onto it if they want... although most galleries are FTPed and configured from a install.php or similar.

My company will write off the cost of the domain rego, and the vps where this will be hosted is under my company name as well. One note is that traffic cannot be commercial (that's my own rule) because I don't want traffic to skyrocket... storage will be plenty (plenty of room atm).

Make sense?

<ramble off> ;)

How's Ken and Matt doing? Were there any other Brisbanites over there with you?

Well Ken's over here "on business" (yeah right) so I'm not sure where he is at the moment.

As for Mat Fitsimmons, he was absolutely a dead certain for this course, but I spoke to the people at the lodge where the course is being run and he isn't registered there. Don't know what happened to him, but I suspect it's something to do with finding a new girl friend:D ;) (He's been having a longer dry spell than Brisbane has when it comes to the girlfriend scene I suspect.)

Helen. I just bought some ND graduated filters (the Cokin setup) and have used them here on a few occasions now. They're a little fiddly to hook up, but have been excellent and the price wasn't too bad either.

Nick C.
15th of May 2007 (Tue), 02:51
No, no camera yet, Helen. :( I don't think the first shipment has made it in yet. Even if it has I doubt I'll get one of those. I think I was about 10th in line at PC.

Helen, or Feng, how do you guys pay for stuff from B&H. I was under the impression that they wouldn't take an Australian CC. I've bought stuff from them before and used a wire transfer but I have to have a minimum of $2000 for that.
I am looking to pick up a monitor calibrator and a card reader (I've got nowhere to stick my CF cards now with this laptop) if anyone want's to throw that in with their order. It's about US$220 so I don't want to send anyone over the GST threshold in doing so.

wakko
15th of May 2007 (Tue), 03:06
not sure Nick.

guess we'll come to that stumbling block when we do... was there a reason they didn't take AU cards? I still have a NZ card :D does that help? :D haha...

I want to try and keep it below $1000AUD.. so we'll see how it all pans out.

Feng, I believe something about their verification dept. having trouble with Australian banks or something like that. There may be a way to mail/fax in verification (such as copy of CC, etc) but I never bothered looking into it further. I just went to Adorama for any small purchases.
Just thought if one of you two had already done that then it would save me going through it all. I know, I'm a bit lazy.

Copy that, about the AU$1000.

Reece, thanks for the heads up. If I had a camera I would've joined you on the Saturday.

Nick - I had to send them a scan of my credit card, back and front. Which I don't agree with and I sent them a tersely worded comment about it when they asked me to fill out a customer satisfaction survey.

Feng, all I want is a Singh-Ray 3 stop soft (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=cart&A=details&Q=&sku=166994&is=REG) and a 2 stop hard (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=cart&A=details&Q=&sku=166993&is=REG)

Paul! get off the computer and go exploring!

^^ i was also pretty peeved at that, then they wanted me to send a bank statement. I told em if they want a bank statement they can call up my bank and get it themselves. anyway, Adorama are pretty good though i use digitalRev for most of my stuff.

Also what happened to your gear nick? ima bit out of the loop.

Nick C.
15th of May 2007 (Tue), 03:48
Yeah, I thought it would be something like that. Like you Helen I'm not too keen on that.

Yeah I've never had a problem with Adorama. They took my card no problem - no verification or anything needed.

Whoa, those GNDs are pricey aren't they? Wouldn't multiple exposures+graduated mask in PS do a similar thing?

HelenThura
15th of May 2007 (Tue), 03:54
They are pricey Nick but very much worth it, as they are 110% neutral unlike a lot of the cheaper ones that may be a reddish gray or a bluey gray. I have gotten this far with doing multi-exposures etc but I am getting sick of having to spend the time in PS playing round and would much rather bag it one outside. Plus I have a problem with multi-exposures with the bloody trees and clouds moving too much between shots.

Nick C.

yeah that is what I found Nick. My filters I have 3 choices as to where to get them - Sing-Ray or Mountain Light (Galen's company) both of whom have rather high shipping charges and sell nothing else or BH.

I don't know if it really classifies as a subliminal message but I will pay 5pts for that call Alexson. When I have the filters in my hand and start posting images of look at this photo, and then x says "how did you do it?" and I say "well X, I used these gorgeous filters to even my exposure, you should try them out". That is subliminal.

Are there any good books out there on photoshop techniques? I only have elements at the moment so I'm not too sure if the CS2 books apply?

I just ordered Scott Kelby's CS2 book from Amazon.

Well I've just finished hopefully the final edit for the busines cards. Thought I'd go simple but non-specific for the time being. Left as much white around the edge incase anyone wants to write anything.

Ignore the red around the very outer edge, that part is for the printers. Apparently it's their margin of area section.

The red writting may be white as well because with the place I'm looking at to print the cards does colour one side and b&w the other side. To have colours on both sides it's an extra $37. So I don't think a little bit of red writting is worth an extra $37.

Hi All,

On the topic of new releases, if Canon are true to previous form the expect a new camera around Aug/Sept. They seem to run their cameras on a 18mth replacement schedule. So the 30D is due to be replaced this Sept. 5D was due in Feb/Mar and the failure to do this upset a lot of people. Get over it!!

Me, I'm more than happy with my 30D for now. I have no great desire to jump to full frame, although I reserve the right to change my mind whenever I want.:p

there's a lot more 2nd hand Canon gear at Ted's than I've seen in a long while. They had a 180 Macro in there for only $100 less than you can pick it up new. To me, if you are dropping that money on it then another $100 just gives you the peace of mind of a shight and briney new lens.

But i did keep looking at the 20d they had, except it was a bit out of my pricerange at $1100, especially when i can get a new body only 30d for $300 more

Hmmm... okay I must have been thinking of something else that was $200.

30D body for $1400? I think you usually only get a twin lens 400D kit for that amount. Whereabouts is this, I'd like to know what they can do about a 5D :D

Alright, it was really $350 instead of $300 but its my weekend and my brain is fried right now

Pretty sure that place came up in this thread a few pages back when all the 5d discussion was about.

My dad is convinced on a 5d right now as well, im still focused on a 30d though.

On a side note, has anyone had any experience dealing with Prolab at south bank? Ive got a bunch of slide and 120 film sitting here waiting to be develeoped and southbank is easier to get to without a car than Photo continental.

Unfortunately I don't know much about Prolab. Though after this weekend I'm getting about six more rolls of print film done, and I'm getting fed up with Fotofast. I'm missing half my Dawn Service shots because they forgot to print or scan those frames... And that's not the first time either. Why is it always the shots I'm most eager to see that they forget?

So yeah, Spam, unless somebody else can tell you I'll look into it and get back to you.

Cool, i was thinking about heading in there tomorrow while i have a chance to.

Was also checking out there website and i cant find anything about them actually processing film for non comercial customers  One would think that given Teds Camera house in town is refering customers needing slide and other format film developed there, they would do it. But im now a bit cautious about going in there with a bag load of film if they wont develop it.

"Though refusal often offends, the least you can do is ask."

That's what I usually say in that regard. :) Though yes, that's the vibe I got from their website as well. If they say no then I'll ask Hugh from QSMEE where he gets his slides done when I see him over the weekend. Being a school teacher I doubt he'd have the time to do it himself :p

Presuming that my final interview for the RAAF is a success in 11 days I am planning on buying a 5D when I finish officer training :) Which should be just after the new one is released.

excellent... :) mmm 5D2 loving (or whatever it's going to be called).

I've decided I'll only get a TC-80N3 Timer (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/164271-REG/Canon_2477A002_Timer_Remote_Controller_TC_80N3.htm l) and a Hoya Pro1 Digitial Circular Polariser (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/391185-REG/Hoya_XD77CRPL_77mm_Circular_Polarizing_Pro.html) for two of my lenses this time, so whoever wants to order, let me know... I guess if someone wants to do the order, I don't mind splitting the freight.

Let me know... I'll probably place an order later on in a couple of months. Cash flow is a bit tight to order the tripod I want.
