Will do, they're deliveringt to my PO Box, I just want to go out there and camp in the post office for the afternoon!

Sad thing is I only have one lens at the moment, just my 100mm macro. I sold all my others and still waiting for my two new ones to arrive :(

For sure, just a shame it's not a telephoto zoom and a wide angle!

My 24-70 *should* be here early next week, my 70-200 is still a little way off :(

Ohh Kinnon that sounds fantastic! You need to update your signature! I can't believe you sold your 50mm, are you planning on upgrading to the 1.4 later ?
We sure have been rather chatty the last week or so haven't we?

Just popped out to the back yard to try out the tubes in some real light. Turns out i shouldnt have been so lazy and taken my tripod down with me but, meh

Here is the only decent one of the bunch i took,

Feng, getting them both second hand from the US. Saved myself about $2000 in doing so.

Yep Helen, sold my 50mm. It gave me the sh*ts with it's slow focus. I think my next lens purchase will be another wide angle because I know i will miss my 10-22. Then I will probably get the 50 1.4 because I know I'll miss that one too.

IMO the canon ones are bit pricey, for about 170 US, you can get a full set of kenko tubes. They are the equivilant of the ones that i bought yesterday

What do you get in a set of kenkos? (like what's actually classed as 'a set').

I mean... is there a reason they're more exy apart from being Canon?

A typical set includes a 12, 20 and a 36mm tube and that can be had for $169 from B&H but a single canon 25mm tube is something like $130.

The best part about having the set is being able to stack them together and focus really really close.

Edit: here is the page for the kenkos http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/375102-REG/Kenko_AEXTUBEDGC_Auto_Extension_Tube_Set.html

No glass at all in the kenkos, they are just hollow tubes. But i think my dad said that he read somewhere that the canon one had glass in it.

no glass in the tubes Feng, just hollow tube to extend the distance. The kenko/jessops tubes retain AF and in turn aperture whilst the ones that cost 30 dollars or so have no electronics in them which means you would be using them wide open 24/7

i do have the canon tube, and it did cost too much, but i read about someone having trouble with their kenko tubes, but i didn't realise the price difference until i had bought it.
actually, i got it because i cancelled my 100-400 order, and had to spend my money on something, as i was claiming the gst back with my trip, and a tube was one of the things i wanted.

What i think is a brisbane pro printing place offering new registered customers 2 free 30x24" inch. Just give them the impression in the application that you are a professional and you should be on your way to getting the prints delivered for free.

Unfortunately I don't know much about Prolab. Though after this weekend I'm getting about six more rolls of print film done, and I'm getting fed up with Fotofast. I'm missing half my Dawn Service shots because they forgot to print or scan those frames... And that's not the first time either. Why is it always the shots I'm most eager to see that they forget?

So yeah, Spam, unless somebody else can tell you I'll look into it and get back to you.

I've had quite a few of my Panoramics printed there and had no problems. It helps to call in a ask how to get your monitor calibrated so you can softproof your images on your computer at home.

how wide's wide? 24-105? or are you talking like the low to high? I heard the EF 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6L IS USM has a pretty ok quality given it's range... but not 100% sure how wide you're talking.

paul, isn't there a 28-300? have to check up on that, but what i intend to do for canada is take the 28-135, and the 100-400. that should cover just about all i could want to shoot.
i use the 70-300 90% of the time here, but when travelling, i would definitely want something shorter than 70, for landscapes etc.
edit, just read feng's post... so yes, there is a 28-300!

Now I think I have caught the bugs of BUY BUY BUY :D hheheh....

Wondering how is the B and H ordering going ???? Still room for one more ??? :D Been thinking of replacing my UV but do not want to pay high price for good quality UV.

I am kinda tempted to get a wide angle lens instead despite my better judgement for now. But I might change my mind in a flash heheheheh ... I think I must blame it on those subliminal messeges around here ...

My reading, so far, has indicated that the store he is going to be working in was the first one to deliver a 1DMKIII - the proud new owner was certainly the first to post 'generic' pictures with one - on any of the various bulletin boards.

If they were that quick to get that camera out the door, it tells me that they are one of Canons favoured distributors.

They like to boast about being the largest store in the Southern Hemisphere.

I got their first 30D, at least that's what the sales girl told me. Bought a bridge that week too.;) You wouldn't believe what that sort of thing does to your web-site's bandwidth. Think I did about 12G that month. ouch!

::John::
18th of May 2007 (Fri), 06:38
Australia was about 6 weeks ahead of the USA with 30D distribution - and I recall, at the time, the many 'complaints' from the US members :)

I waited quite a while before buying the 5D and still managed to get one of the early Canon 'development' models - not that it has been a problem - just coming up on 50k shots on it now - airshow tomorrow so will definately be over 50k after this weekend.

yeah - one of my web sites does around 10-12G a month in bandwidth - pity I bought the 10G package - the extra 2G costs serious money :)

Greg_C
18th of May 2007 (Fri), 06:49
I remember all those complaints. Might have annoyed others OS but great for us.

Normally I sit somewhere between 2-5G so I don't usually have many problems. I'm doing the normal sat morning soccer shot at my sons soccer games. Did a bit of POTN recruiting last week, one of the mums had a 300D and made comment about my 30D+grip+100-400. I mentioned the forum was a great place for tips and such.

::John::
18th of May 2007 (Fri), 07:19
I have a POTN camera strap and vest - both clearly marked POTN - and they do get noticed. I haven't put POTN on my business cards, though, like others have. I write it on the back of the card if 'they' ask.

I used to sit on 5G a month - regular as clockwork for the past 6 years but, recently, that site has gone nuts.

We have the F-111 both days this weekend - so there is sure to be a daylight dump and burn I am thinking. There will also be a Kittyhawk flying in for the weekend - and I think the Sydney Morning Herald organised a trip in the Super Constellation that went down tonight - returning to Sydney on Sunday.

With the interest generated by the advertising of the F-111, the airfield has decided to open up more entry gates this time - on busy weekends it can normally take up to an hour to get through the gates.

I think I'm about to have a tanty.....

My pc has XP and I was using it for frontpage to do my website, but my laptop has vista and it has publisher....kinda the same but kinda not, I can't really get the 2 programs to talk to each other and I really don't like publisher.

I want to have the laptop as my photography base, so basically where I keep all the files for the website as well as all the photos that will be in the gallery.

I think what I'm trying to get at here is asking if there is a mutal website building program that the two can share (xp and vista, or even just vista)? Aaron has an old version of dreamweaver from his uni days (about 4 years ago) would that work ok?

Or is there a simple easy to use program out there that doesn't cost the earth, or is even free that I can use to build my webpages?

Kelsey-Lee

Hmmm... I remember hearing of one, but can't remember at the moment Kinnon, sorry.
One of the many reasons I do not want/like vista.

That's cool Kelsey, let me know if you do remember.

I tried to avoid a laptop with vista, but this one was too good of a deal to pass up. I've had no real problem with it so far (touch wood) it's just a pain trying to get the two to communicate. Vista does have a file save option where I can save for example a word file as a pre vista document.

I think it's just this website business giving me a headache!

-spam-

Perhaps ditch vista on the laptop and install XP on it? I remember talking with my dad about how thats what we would do if we both got new non apple machines.

wakko
18th of May 2007 (Fri), 10:09
If you want help getting them to communicate, it's easier for the vista machine to access the XP machine, than vice versa.

Also, with office, if you're running office 2007, then there's a microsoft file converter which allows old versions to open the new docx format etc.

on the web page stuff... i reckon dreamweaver is one of the cleanest WYSWYG type web applications. May be worth consideration. I can definitely get that wholesale, so let me know if your'e interested. Software is marked up terribly at retail stores.

I love the dump and burns.:D What are we going to do in a few years time when we don't have F-111's any more. Have fun today John.

I think most of you have seen these before, but what the heck.:D:D;) My two fav dump & burn shots. 1st is riverfire 2004 next is riverfire 2006. We used to get privileged access to a empty class room at St Laurences College via my wife's cousin who taught there, but she left at the end of last year. Luckily my son now goes there so we'll still get the view but maybe in a more crowded room.

Hi Kinnon,

You could move Frontpage to the laptop, it should run under Vista - at least I would have thought so, but you can never tell with software. And I guess you've though of this already.

A free option is Nvu, a open source HTML editor. Not as wiz bang as Frontpage but may do. My guess is that it'll not have the features you want to do your site. You can find a version on Portable Apps (http://portableapps.com/apps) a good source of free progs that will run straight from a USB stick.

Sorry for barging in. I was trying to find out how many members actually went to Queenstown this weekend?

As for Frontpage. Have you seen this (http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/express/vwd/). It's free and although it's biased towards aspx pages it can do simple html stuff. Also the next version of Frontpage is Expression Web (http://www.microsoft.com/Expression/products/overview.aspx?key=web) which by all accounts will give Dreamweaver a good run for its money. It doesn't have php support as yet but both apps give intellisense etc.

Just installed deamweaver 4 on the computer and it seems it's a 60 day trial version. I can handle that. But in 60 days when the trial runs out will my page files still be valid? Like they'll still work on the web but I wont be able to access them in dreamwever anymore?

And if I do upgrade to dreamweaver, would the old dreamweaver 4.0 files still work in the new dreamweaver?

Thanks :D

Once you finish editing you files (usually locally on your laptop) you upload them via ftp to the web server. Frontpage and I guess Dreamweaver also, will have this type of publish tool. What this all mean in 60 days is that you won't be able to edit the files (local or remote) with Dreamweaver after the expiration date.

But! your web page will still work, you just can't use Dreamweaver to edit it. If you are keen you could use a text editor like notepad to do very simple mods - if they get more complex thing will be very tricky if you are not familiar with HTML coding by hand.

Good news is all the files will be compatible with the new version of Dreamweaver. Rule of thumb is that the newer programs will open older versions but not the other way. I haven't had experience with DW but I guess it just stores your site locally like it would be on the web - as HTML. If this is the case then other progs like frontpage should be able to open the web pages also. Notice I made should in italics - there is usually a few differences between applications.

Just one thing, FrontPage goes andf screws up all the html formatting that you have done in DW. There is a few other things that it does that arent very nice when you open DW files in frontpage as well, but ill have to ask my dad about it. He used to work in frontpage all the time until he got DW and he doesnt want to go back now.

Here'a a shot of my son from this mornings game. Haven't managed to get any of those keeper flying through the air shots yet. He had to face his first pently shot today -- the guy kicked it straight into the post, Aaron was so relieved.

Thanks for the help. I think I'll stick to dreamweaver because Feng mention the same thing about front page messing the codes up or something. Hopefully in 60 days time I'll have a job and can afford the new version of dreamweaver.

All I need is something at the moment to get my website up there and gallery, start going to the dog shows/schools and hopefully make a bit of money out of that and that can pay for the stuff I really need.

You learn pretty quick not to take it personally.
I always believe defenders (of which I was one for most of the time) are the ones truly responsible for preventing the opposition from scoring. The keeper is simply the last line of defence. If it reaches him/her then obviously the rest of the team have been beaten as well.

Greg_C

Aaron actually specially trialled to be keeper. So was stoked to get the position, and loves it. They got two by him today, the first one he was obscured by a team mate and could see the ball and the second was a huge kick from way out that ended up in the top corner far above his reach.

I walked down to the creek (Bulimba Ck) just near my place today to hunt down a few dragonflies. I got a few dragonflies in flight (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?p=3230256#post3230256). I also had a very friendly duck come and check me out.

Those ones blocked by a team mate are the worst - you end up just having to virtually watch it go by you.
It is a lot of goal to protect when you're younger. Particularly when you're facing a penalty like you mentioned.

:( i can't make it... we're heading down the coast (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showpost.php?p=3230999&postcount=1932) at about 2pm...

i can't wait for the 3rd now that it's been moved to the arvo... i can make it just before lunch, so if you wanna still hang for lunch? or something something... :)

have fun at the sherwood place... as with Helen, i expect to see plenty of wonderful shots, and be suitably jealous. :)

me, me, me. Though sadly I won't be there, way too much study to do and I have to bake a cake for morning tea at work tomorrow.

Have a blast though and I hope to see lots of photos.

Bye a cake and then cram -- in time honoured uni tradition of course.;)

We had a great arvo down at Sherwood Forest Park, I think we all each got heaps of shots. Here is my Purple Swamp Hen (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?p=3234853#post3234853). There was Tina, Dave (dpastern) and myself and although the water level in the ponds was a little low (maybe a lot low), there was still lots to shoot.

Hi all,

here's another ducky from today. Loved the pose but hate the water, it would be a absolute winner if the duck was on a nice clean glassy surface.

Hi Tag,

Well I'm writing this from Kinloch Lodge near Glenorchy near Queenstown and the course is about finished:( There were only two of our members at the course...me and Ken.

I can tell you that I have learned more about photography in the last few days than I have since I first picked up a digital camera about 18 months ago. Jackie Ranken and Mike Langford would have to be the most talented photographers I have ever met. Mike just won the Australian Institute of Professional Photographers "Best Photo of 2007" competition and Jackie was runner up.

They are extremely friendly people who are devoted to spreading the knowledge of their craft. They have no hang ups about showing us their "photographic secrets" and Mike even showed us the Before and After of his AIPP award winning shot and how he processed it.

They are extremely keen for their students (us) to get the shot "right" IN THE CAMERA.

I can tell all of you who are thinking about this course, that it is worth every cent. Kinloch Lodge is a magic place and John Glover who runs it is very obliging. We have convinced Mike and Jackie to run next years course over a whole week and do it earlier when the autumn leaves are still on the trees. I know I'll be going.

I'll start posting pictures as soon as I get back tomorrow or the day after.

See you guys soon.
