I'll have 12 months to save up and I've made aaron keen because he's a fly fisherman and we were watching "A River Somewhere" (Rob Sitch and Tom Gliesner fly fishing rivers of the world) the other night and they were in NZ and now aaron really wants to go there and do some fly fishing :D

BEWARE: SUBLIMINAL MESSAGES!

A bit more than a year to save Kinnon. We had a long talk with Jackie and Mike and all of us agreed the course was too short. So they are going to schedule a full 5 day course on landscape photography here at Kinloch in SEPTEMBER 2008.

So Peoples, that's when I'm going again. Anyone care to join me? It will be at the end of winter and there should be a lot more snow about and it will be a lot colder. You definitely need wet weather gear and warm weather gear including waterproof overpants.

I've got my computer hooked up to Kinloch's internet so I'll upload an image shortly.

had a good afternoon out yesterday, but i see i have a lot to learn about my new lens. None of my dragonflies turned out. Own fault, should have used flash, but i don't have a difuser yet, so didn't want to use it. Had a really good morning shoot out at wivenhoe, will upload a shot in a minute.

edit, here it is, very scary when you think the water should be up to the trees on the skyline. It i so dry there, unreal.

I can tell all of you who are thinking about this course, that it is worth every cent. Kinloch Lodge is a magic place and John Glover who runs it is very obliging. We have convinced Mike and Jackie to run next years course over a whole week and do it earlier when the autumn leaves are still on the trees. I know I'll be going.

I'll start posting pictures as soon as I get back tomorrow or the day after.

Hey,

I am doing the Weekend Workshop in June. Cant wait. As with your post, I have only heard great things about these people.

Would love to see some of the photos you took. Did you go out to any places yourself after the course around Queenstown? I am there for a week and looking at places to go and take photos. That doesn't break the budget :D

Nice shot Tina, the cracks in the mud lead the eye through to the tree stumps and you tend to follow the cracks across the whole image, pity about the Dragonflies. I got a couple to post soon and also a shot of you and Dave crouched down shooting dragonflies.

I had a run in with this fellow sunday morning. I am normally very scared and wary of snakes, but with a camera in my hand, i seem invincible. Anyway, he posed for a while after we had startled him (and us!), and he started moving off, and i was chasing him to try and get a good shot. He didn't like that much and had a go at me. Now i tell you, i can move fast too! Don't know what he is.

okay guys, i seem to be having problems with my lens. have a look at the background of my photos (top third), and see how it looks funny? Have any of you come across that before? I am starting to notice it in all my photos. Where does one go to get one's lens check out? I know it is blurry, but it is the way it is blurry that is bothering me.

Is it doing it on all lenses and at smaller apertures? Wouldn't be the DOF? Although it looks very unconsistent... not really like smooth bokeh you'd expect?

Is it some kind of brown snakes. I think it could be poisonous. The first one looks great. You were all very brave taking pictures of such dangerous creature. I once nearly step into one in my garden, a juvenile brown snake.

Did you say you chase him/her and then he/she chased you ? someone should have taken the pictures of before and after lol.

Are you on Windows 2000 ? I have exactly the same issue ? is that some sort of virus being around from Microsoft ???

I get the blue screen for like 20 times I have been trying to get it back working. I think I might reinstall my windows 98. Less headache since some of the functions in Windows 2k have been disabled by the guy who helped me with my previous issue with Win 98.

Hope you get yours working. Good that I have a notebook on the side.

Nice shots people. Tina, I can't offer any suggestions for the problems with your lens, but it looks to me that there might be a problem.

Have you considered doing one of the many lens tests? You will need a constant background that can be used to judge the quality of the OOF area.

Here's another shot from Sunday arvo, this time its a few cockatoos in flight (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?p=3246072#post3246072).

Tina, you're a lucky devil. I've been trying to photograph a snake for years. Either they run away before I get my camera ready or I don't have my camera with me:(

My "Wildlife of Greater Brisbane" seems to indicate your snake is a "Grey Snake" (boring name hey) and is mildly venemous to the point of being harmless.

lol lol lol ... beware though since I saw a couple of snakes in my yard, I did some research. Not all brown snakes variety are that brown. Not sure if they camouflage or not, however they certainly do not look brown on some of the pics.

Again, I am no snakes expert. They could be another type but the look of the skin freaks me out. Whatever you do, do not ever chase again !!! If you do not get in their way, they would not harm. You could always zoom in next time.

Great nobody was unharmed. I guess this is counter productive. In the bush, make a bit of noise on the ground to see if there is a snake around, they would get away from you anyway if they do, so do the insects LOL.

One vote for 17th one for this weekend - that makes things easy.

You hardly press at all, more of a gentle wipe. I reckon you amost spend more time folding the pec pad and getting it ready than you do doing the actual cleaning.

-Pleiades-

I'll second spending more time prepping the pec pad than actually swiping it.

The later date would probably be better for me, or even the weekend after the 17th. It's Aaron and my wedding anniversary on the 15th and we usually go away, but not too sure what will be happening this year because I still haven't found myself another job. But hopefully by mid june I will have.

Everything is just up in the air for me at the moment and money is a little tight. So I can't make any definate plans at the moment.

Hi everyone,

I am back now from the course in New Zealand and can echo Paul's comments about the course - WOW great location and great teachers.

The first night (Friday) was spent with every student showing 5 of our images and discussion our work and our aims. Jackie and Mike showed some of their stuff as well.

Saturday was spent going through some exercises to broaden our mind with respect to images etc. This was mostly done within walking distance of the lodge (not that we needed to go any further than the front door for great images).

Sunday was wet and we all trooped off in 4wd's to a place called Paradise. Those who have watched Lord of the Rings or Nania would recognise the dark green spooky forest that we entered at this location. The day was spend gathering rainforest shots including some great macro opportunity on Mushrooms.

My accomdation experience was somewhat different to Pauls so I would recommend booking into the lodge in a more formal room instead of the bunk rooms and also suggest taking some snack foods for yourself.

Anyway, as I get a chance to work through some images I will post them up for everyone to take a peek at. The image posted below was provided to me by Jackie Rankin and shows Paul and I via for a good shot of an interesting driftwood pier.

I learned something interesting about our cameras. There were several 400D's 350D's a 10D and my 20D plus Jackie and Mike's 5D. I nearly wasn't going to go because it was raining and I only took a few shots because my camera got wet, but the others were more adventurous. Their cameras got covered in water and still worked! They were literally wiping the water off the lenses and camera bodies.

The Canon cameras stood up to the water very well indeed. I was impressed.

Lol Paul, I will echo that, mine has taken a fair beating and she is still good. I am not about to go underwater with her but they are like kids, a lot tougher than you think.

Also, how much do you reckon a second hand 400d with under 4500 clicks would go for?

I notice you refer to your camera as a "she". How can you tell it's sex? Do you just look underneath it? (Oh wait a minute...YOU'RE RIGHT):D

EDIT: Hey maybe if we can find a male camera, we can get them a hotel room for the night, ply them with alcohol, and we'll have a whole lot of little point and shoots after a few months.

So what happens if you try inter-brand breeding? Say between a 1dmk3 and a nikon d2xs? do you get a sigma sd14?

Nick C.

I think you'd need barrel loads of alcohol for a Canon to want to mate with a Nikon ;)
And both of them would look to give the kid up for adoption when they realise it's a Sigma :)

hey everyone

finally back online after A) going to Italy for work and B) having shoulder reconstruction surgery. in a cruel blow it will be weeks before I have the strength back to even pick up my camera, but it gives me a chance to do some PP.

So here are a couple of from modena where i was working for a week.
I think both of these are more about the place than the photograph.

I was planning to buy a DSLR as a graduation present last year and also to use on my cruise that i went on instead of schoolies. I was going to get the k10d originally, but when it came time to buy a camera it wasnt released and the stores had no idea when it was going to be. So i bought the 400d.

Turns out i didnt even take it on the cruise (didnt want to risk taking it and i used a 2mp kodak instead). And then 2 weeks after i got back, the k10 was released. I have been kicking myself since for not waiting.

Oh and even just using our k100d is miles different from the 400d, the viewfinder is massive on the pentax and it feels a little better put together.

Got a Bee in our Palm tree (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=324601). It's weird, the palm has been sending up flower spikes for months, never done that before in all the years we've been here. The Bees love it and it's usually covered in them. The first spike now has fruit on it, doubt it's eatable though.

Was out looking around and noticed that one of the leaf curl spiders was out of it's leaf and in the web, but not by the time I got back down there with the camera.:( All you see is the front of the legs pointing out this front of the curled up leaf.
