Nice shots there Sam, and I like the business card, simple and clear.

PS. I was a way from the office on Friday so didn't see anything reply to the email I sent to the possible buyer. I probably won't be back at my desk until Tuesday so do hold it on my account if you get a offer. Rostered day off tomorrow yeh!!

but it looks like there is a lot of people with that name for their little photography businesses. It took ages to find an email host where sh.photo@whatever.com wasnt already taken

shphoto.com.au and shphoto.net.au are both still unregistered, but you need a business name (in theory;)) to register one of these. Then you can be xxx@shphoto.com.au:D:D

I use www.featuredomains.com to register my domains through.

I thought you could use a company to register on your behalf? I'm not sure... all of my domains are .com, .net and .org as I don't ever know where I'm going to be in the next 10 years or so... and want it to be country independent (although it's sorta US, but not really).

I use GoDaddy for .com, .net and .org registrations mainly so it keeps them all with my first one :).

there is usually something in the questions you fill out, business name and abn. My steadyhands is a .net for the same reason, to be independant. My carlill ones are .net and .net.au, and for the .au we got the business questions. I just filled in my wife's business name and abn 'cause we do share a surname now.;) I have the .net.au parked as a redirected subdomain at the moment.

I think some of the companies are more militant about enforcement than others. Melbourne IT comes to mind. The wife used to use them for registrations and they were a bit more expensive that some of the others, or at least were then.

yeah that's right... www.jumba.net.au is quite cheap for hosting, but I found setting dedicated vps hosting a bit of a pain (i.e. no way to set up ns records on your own, and having to request the support guys to do it. You could always leave the DNS server at jumba which wouldn't have any sideeffects.

It's right there on the page you've found. You click the link marked ZIP in the right hand column. I downloaded the "Midnight Action Collection", but have only been able to get two of them to work. (After a three or more hour drive, I can understand that you might not see them though.) :-D

Welcome to the Brissie thread. What ya get, huh, huh.:D

Rules of this thread are:-
1. Watch out for the subliminal messages that others people send (not me;)) about buying new camera gear. (by a new lens, buy a new lens)

2. Have fun and ask lots of questions because we'll all try to help.

Seriously though, if you haven't read though all of our drivel then I'll let you know we very regularly get together for social photo outings where we share our knowledge.

welcome connor

yep, i got imatch, and after a small hiccup, and help from greg, i have it now under control (haha, at least, i hope so!). It will be an invaluable tool down the track, especially for my images i enter into comps, because apart from 2 clubs, there are also interclubs, and nationals. I can then also mark those i got merits and honours for. It will take me some time to catalogue it all, but once done, it will be a breeze.

Heeeeelp......I just downloaded the midnight sepia plugin and it's an .atn file, how do I get that to work?
Just copy the .atn file to somewhere like this
C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS2\Presets\Photoshop Actions\Midnight Actions.atn

But subsiitute Adobe Photoshop CS2 for Elements 5 or which ever version you had. Then when you load Elements you have to go to the actions pallet, it might be at the top or on the right, and click on the little arrow in the top right corner of the actions box. This will bring up a menu from which you can select load action. Do this and then select the one you just downloaded. After this it will appear in the actions pallet.

The midnight actions are all great but only tend to work well on a limited range of photos. I have had a bit of success with the sepia on portrait stuff, which is unusual.

-Pleiades-
28th of May 2007 (Mon), 06:50
Cheers Greg, there's no 'photoshop actions' folder in the 'presets' folder, so do I just create one?

I've downloaded a few from the site so I'll give them all a go. If it improves one photo out of 100 I'll be happy!

Mmm not sure, consult the help file and see what it says. I used to have Elements 2 and it couldn't run Photoshop actions, but I though that had changed now.

Nick C.
28th of May 2007 (Mon), 07:17

Nick C.
28th of May 2007 (Mon), 08:35
Hmmm, not having much luck are you
I assume you mean your photoshop elements directory (just making sure we're looking in the right place to start with). The stuff I just read seemed to suggest that that folder should be there (in the "5.0" folder under the elements directory). Maybe if it isn't just create what you need to and see how it goes (if you haven't already)

-Pleiades-

Oooo Kinnon...you said a rude word:D Try this. Don't even open up Photoshop; just go to Windows "search" function (it's in the Start Menu) and type in *.atn. That will find all the action files (if there are any) and tell you where it found them. Then just add your action file to that folder:D

wakko
28th of May 2007 (Mon), 17:13
Just copy the .atn file to somewhere like this
C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS2\Presets\Photoshop Actions\Midnight Actions.atn

I did a quick google, and they said this:

Then put the Actions in Some Folder:
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Adobe\Photoshop Elements\5.0\Photo Creations\special effects\Some Folder

That was here (http://www.photoshopelementsuser.com/forum/showthread.php?t=23689)

So I guess C:\Documents and Settings\\All Users\Application Data\Adobe\Photoshop Elements\5.0\Photo Creations\special effects\Midnight Actions ???? no idea :| sounds a bit weird to me :|

In Vista, I'm not too sure (is this on your Vista machine?).

Edit: The more I google, the more confused I get :) I might rest my brain for a bit ;)

but I found this which echo's Greg's original comment:

Midnight Action Collection
Dave Jaseck has pulled his four popular "midnight" actions together into one set--Midnight Blue, Gold, Sepia--and the new Midnight Black. These at last equal and may surpass some commercial filters designed to achieve the same effects. The color tone can be adjusted by putting an action stop at the color balance step.
Also included is an Elements2 version for use with Ling's snapAction interface. The .atn files go into Elements's "Presets/Photoshop Actions" folder. The .xml file goes into Elements's "HTMLPalettes/Recipes/LUI/add" folder. Then run snapActions and you should see "Menu: Dave Jasecks's Midnight actions" on the Left. Move it to the Right and hit Generate.
http://www.atncentral.com/Zip_Actions/Midnight_Action_Collection.zip

Edit again:

Found this site (http://www.coverdude.com/pslist.htm) (where that quote was from)... are those actions legit?!

Nick C.
28th of May 2007 (Mon), 18:42
Don't worry, Feng I'll back you up with some googling of my own :)

Good point about Vista being different - didn't even think of that. The file system is quite different. I did a bit of looking around on my machine and Google and come up with this.

Assuming you are using Vista, try plopping your *.atn files into a new folder in this directory (hopefully this exists - I'm sort of guessing this is where you'd find it in Vista):

C:\ProgramData\Adobe\Photoshop Elements\5.0\Photo Creations\special effects\

P.S. The 'ProgramData' folder will be hidden by default so you'll have to show hidden files and folders to see it.

looking? In photoshop? Everywhere.

I've tried placing the .atn file in already existing folders, I've tried creating new ones, I've made the little thumbnail image, I've done what photoshop has told me to do "To select an additional plug-ins folder
You can select an additional plug-ins folder in which to load compatible plug-ins stored with another application.
In the Editor, choose Edit > Preferences > Plug-Ins & Scratch Disks
In the Preferences dialog, select Additional Plug-ins Folder, select a folder from the list, and click Choose.
To display the contents of a folder, double-click the directory. The path to the folder appears in the preferences window.
Note: Do not select a location inside the Plug-ins folder for Photoshop Elements.
Restart Photoshop Elements to load the plug-ins."

I don't know what now.....

I knew you were going to ask me that! Um.....not sure exactly, just about to try and install another plug in and hope I can do it again!

After all that I forgot to mention that my 70-200 2.8 IS arrived today, and my goodness it's heavy! Can't wait to have a play with it, but I'm working sunrise to set tomorrow so I guess I'll have to wait till thursday :(

I found a site somewhere that compare all the 1.4 TCs available and one of the Tamron Converters came up tops. It was the Tamron SP 1.4 AF Pro I think (it's at home at the moment).

So I bought one of them. It's been great and I have no complaints. It is compatible with more Canon lenses than the Canon 1.4 is too (simply because it doesn't have one of the elements protruding outwards.)

Ok guys, i havnt even sold my current stuff and im kind of regretting it.

Would it be sane to sell my 400d kit gear to buy a used 20d and then maybe the 85mm f1.8 that i had been longing for since getting the camera? I could use the kit lenses that my dad got with his 400d because he doesnt use them any more until i saved up for some replacements.

Now, anyone know of a used 20d anywhere (besides the one at teds in the city)

Also, I just got an email back from my drama teacher from last year who directed the musical that i posted photos of the other day. She wants to buy some of them, but i dont know what to do. She (like everyone else from my drama class) is pretty much family so i dont really want to charge for them.

Should i just give them to her as a gift to say thank you for helping me so much and giving me a chance and the space to just be who i wanted to be? (our drama studio at school was the only place i could really just be "me")

That's a tough call. I know for me I'm not in the business of photography (yet... thinking of tying it to my business just to get more perks... :)) so I know for me, because I'm not pro and it's a hobby, I'd give them.

Damn those subliminals!!!!!!!! :D

Um... I got this breakdown from OCAU:

30D $1200 maybe
BG-E2 $160-80 with batteries
17-85 $520-30
Filters not much they are only 67mm ones. $40 total

It's about what I expected... which almost rounds it to about $2000 for the package. I didn't really want to sell unless I could get around $2K for it... bearing in mind there are those undocumented things like a Katz Eye focussing split screen installed which cost me a bucket load.

So I'd probably say roughly ~$1850 for the following:

30D Enthusiast Kit (17-85 bundle)
Hoya 67mm Pro 1 UV(0)
Hoya 67mm Pro 1D CPL
Hood for lens
Katz Eye Focussing Screen

Bought from PhotoBuff less than 1 year ago with ~7500 actuations.

and probably ~$160-180 for the following:

BG-E2 w/ 2 Aftermarket Batteries

Doubt I'd want to move TOO much from that considering the filters being Pro 1s (didn't agree with the OCAU guy... i mean... who gets 2 pro 1 filters for $40? even 2nd hand?? dreaming! :)) and the lack of mention of the Katz Eye focussing screen.

*shrug*... again... it's a subliminal message sell.

How many clicks to you reckon it has on it now? That katz eye screen is a big plus, i guess going from past experience i would be using manual focus a lot for the stage stuff so it would help a bit.

If i can manage to off load my current stuff, i will probably take it. Its about what i was going to end up spending on a k10d and 16-45mm pentax lens anyway. :D

Let me know if you offload your gear... and I'll go investigate a 5D from the buff miester.

It's done ~7500 actuations.

Easy as pie. I installed it, and it's easy to remove.... litereally take off the lens, put a bit of protective paper between mirror and you... toothpick to pop open the little bracket which holds it in... take out bracket with tweezers... tip camera back... screen lies onto paper... take out with tweezers holding onto edge... put original screen back in, and reaffix the bracket thing. ;) 5 min job for me... and I'm hopeless at delicate things :)

Didn't seem to affect spot metering too much to me... but I may have a false sense of what's accurate :) heheh

I forgot... the camera includes original screen too! :D HAHAHA :D

Hey connor. The settings seem fine... just try putting the iso down to 100 and playing with your shutters etc... if you're using a tripod, the shutter speed wont' matter. I find with the ISO at 800, especially with moon shots, they tend to show through a little bit of noise.

so in summary of my mess of a sentence... lower ISO, adjust shutter to suit ;)

Well I've never done a moon shot, but I remember that any shot can be made sharper by opening the aperture to larger than f:11 to avoid diffraction effects. I'll have to have a go.

Feng, if the Telfast completely stop working I recommend the Rhinocourt. Even just one spray in each nostril every couple of days really helps. No major side effects either.

Phernergen (sp?) help too but it's an antihistimne so it leaves you feeling drowsy and I find i always feel dopey the next day, or just dopier than usual!

Hrmm... I used to use the following cocktail...

1. Claratyne or Telfast - Tablet
2. Beconase - Nasal Spray (Steroid based too)
3. Opticrom - Eye Drops

Then I decided to go cold turkey for about 1.5 years while we were trying for our daughter... then one day (after helen was already preggers) I had such a bad sneezing fit that my ear had this ring in it... and I couldn't hear properly out of it... It'd also hear pitches wrong which worried me because I love playing music and play mostly by ear... and not being able to hear right was scary... so I started taking just Telfast again... and been 'ok' since.

Yeah, aspirin would probably be the most common example of a salicylic based medicine. It is found naturally in certain foods as well. Tomatoes, I discovered, are particularly high in salicylates. Had to avoid anything with tomato in it for about seven months. You just don't realise how much food actually has tomato or tomato paste/sauce in it.

Yep, Zyrtec is tablet form. I'm not sure, I think it was a once a day thing too. Can't comment on the alcohol - not really a drinker.

How did you have a tempory allergy Nick? I thought any kind of allergy would be permanant.

I try going cold turkey every now and then just to give my body a break but it nearly kills me. I instantly get sinusitis and it wont go away so I've just given up, probably does me more harm then good anyway.

That was always my understanding too. I have no idea why the allergy suddenly developed one day and equally no idea why it disappeared again  I'm just happy it wasn't permanent.

so we have jumped from discussing web sites to subliminal messages (what is the best price for a 5D body around???) to allergies and the best cocktail to take.

I'm a girl who pops telfast like it is smarties when I go places where there are little flying creatures who like to attack but other than that I glad I don't have to the rest of the time.

Hi Mat :D

and now for a photo to share.

For the moon shot - keeping those same values you have - iso 800 @ 1/800 @ f/16 you can slide those values down to iso 200 @ 1/800 @ f/8 and maintain the same exposure - I haven't taken any photos of the moon but I have no reason as to why f/8 wouldn't be fine for the moon to maintain DoF.

My understanding is that allergies are permanent, though it's intolerances that can come and go. Key word being understanding - I'm not much of a science person so I don't know all the medical mumbojumbo. :)

I wish all my allergies would just disappear. I've been quiet sick lately, in and out of hospital and doctors surgeries and they can't figure out whats wrong with me. I saw a gastro doc on tuesday and his latest guess is some kind of food allergy coupled with some kind of auto-immune disease. Now I have to make a food diary of every little thing that I eat for the next 2 months to try and figure out what's making me sick. Fun fun!

Anyone like puzzles? :P

Good question on the 5D price Helen :)

I think I may have just sold my 30D :) but not sure :)

I was going to buy mine off the Buff miester I think. It's grey, but it's okay these days... had a good experience with him on my 30D purchase... and his price isn't too bad with an AU ABN and Tax Invoice for my company :)

I'll probably get the 5D, grip and a couple of batteries.

GROUP BUY! I know Paul and Greg want one ;) ;) ;)

I wish mine would go away :( hate being dependent on pills :(

In NZ, I can't eat crustacean (crabs and lobsters), but in AU I can. :)

I got mine from Photobff, I had no idea an ABN could get you a cheaper price though, I still have my ABN from the business :(

I was thinking about getting the grip as well, but I was having a bit of a play with my 5D, 70-200 and flash last night in the lounge room and after about 5 minutes my arms were in major pain. I'm going to have to get me back to the gym!

Serious? Do you know why? Do they add something in NZ that they don't here?

That sounds pretty right, Rob. We'll say I had an intolerance then.

That's no good, Kinnon. It's no fun when the doctor's don't know what's wrong. Gets expensive too.

Tell me about it. About a month ago I had to have an endoscopy and colonoscopy done and because I couldn't wait to go through the public system I had to go private. Cost me $1400 and I had to use the money that I was saving for a laptop. I think the total medical expenses for me over the past few months would be well over $2000, getting close to three. At least I can claim it on tax though.

NAh just means you can write it off... Don't get any special price for having an ABN.

I walked around AU zoo with my 30D/Grip and 70-2002.8IS too and it wasn't too bad... too about 4G in photos that day :)

I dunno why... but it's weird...

Hmmm, interesting ...

Yeah VERY interesting... but i like Brisbane seafood better anyways :D mmm mud crabs :P

Ill definitely take it, if someone bites on the 400d

No problem if you can't... I'm still sorta dangling it out there... if someone bites then it's bitten... I'll hold it as long as I can ;) I haven't put one FS thread yet :)

My dad wants one as well, the more we get the cheaper it should be :DWell that's 5 now (counting Greg and Paul... cos they know they want one ;)) *snigger*

Oooh, that reminded me. Its nearly tax return time. I should be getting enough back to get myself the 10-20 or a large chunk towards a 70-200 :)

I will have to pull out my ABN when I do get a 5d as well.

Kinnon, I would rig up your 5d with the 70-200 and the flash and use that to do weights with at home. Just lifts in each arm.

yeah... but depends who it goes to.

if someone wants the whole lot, then I'll let it go as a bundle. someone expressed interest and wanted to pay $2100 for the lot... he's thinking though

I'll still sell it for the price I mentioned earlier if Sam and yourself pick it up.

mmmm I'm excited now... I'm going to hold off on the B&H order... can you wait Helen?

I was looking at some random blogs yesterday most of whom use the 5d and well I was looking at the bank balance and going mmm can I justify it. Though in saying that I will be holding off on buying one for a couple of weeks at least till I sort out some full time work.

I can wait Feng as still waiting for that other filter to come back in stock.

Rob - isn't beach camera the shady joint or is that another camera store????
