ello all!
Paul, anything that's not close to me is out at the moment. I think another trip to brissy will blow the fuel budget for the fortnight. That's cool though.
Have you climbed Mt Warning before Paul? I did it a couple of years ago when I was superfit and it was really really hard. That night and the next day I could barely walk. And this was back when I was going to the gym for two hours every day and the fittest I had ever been.
Minyon Falls is about a 30 min drive from lismore. At Clunes there's a turn off and it's probably another 15min from there. Rocky Creek Dam is on the way as well.

A few times and I'm also sore afterwards. The trick is to do it SLOWLY. Stop every 15 mins or so. In my current state of fitness...it would be every two minutes:D

ahh exams, got mine over the next 3 weeks, fun times ahead.
On another sour note, i bought a 50 f/1.8 last tuesday from digitialrev (where i get most of my gear and have been more then happy with these thus far) for a gig im shooting tonight in the valley. Thing is, it still hasnt arrived... it was in stock and everything yet was only shipped from HK on wed.
anyway, the 17-70 is going to have to have a good attempt in the poor lighting, at 50mm its at like f/3.5 which is a bit high but we will see.

Reese, both lenses I ordered from Digital rev tool a little longer than I expected. A week or more if I remember correctly.

Everythign iv bought from them so far has taken no longer then 5 days. i bought the 17-70 on a friday and it was here on the monday, no idea how that works but i was impressed. guess i just got unlucky.

thats actually followed me to a tee. The camera i obviously really wanted, took like a week, my 17-70 i kinda didnt mind to much ,arrived suspiciously quickly, my 300L, well i could go on for hours about the troubles with that and now this which i needed...

hey Reese? are you on the south side? If so, you're welcome to use my 50 f/1.4 for the gig... just have to make sure you double check the focus etc... it's a bit of a furf compared with L lenses.

nah im on the north side, thanks for the offer though, appreciated. Iv been looking through the performing arts threads here and looking at exif data, if the lighting is ok i might get away with it but i do wish the 17-70 was a constant 2.8 :(.

reese - are you still around? if so come via my place at kedron and you can take my 50mm 1.8
Most of the gigs I have done in the valley the lighting has been well - crap unless it is at the tiovli which is not too shabby.

I was just looking at these (http://mpex.com/Strobist/StrobistKits.htm) lighting kits that are basically starter kits to follow the strobist lighting tutorials.
I was thinking about getting the second one they have on that list. Just to save running around to find everything i would need. Now that i have a camera with a pc sync terminal, why not make use of it?

Just had a play with the 50mm on the 5D, and it's spot on now! :D I remember when I first got it, the focus control was REAL tight... but now it's much looser (after using it more)... and now the focus is nice and sharp... even at 1.4

Mine was always sharp at 1.4 - even on the 350D - but I think I have been lucky/spoiled with my lenses - they have all been pretty good - well, all but one of the Canon ones have. The only reason I don't use f/1.4 much is the really narrow DOF up close - eyes in focus but nose and ears OOF
How's the 17-40 on the 5D? I have the 16-35 and it really blew me away from the first time I used it.

17-40 is wide! :D hehe... I love it :) I'd love a 16-35 though just to get the extra stop... but i am only intending on using the 17-40 really for landscapes etc... I think the 24-70 will stay on 80% of the time for now...

I have the non-IS version - it is very fast and sharp and a bit lighter than the IS version.
If I am shooting for fun and for me, the 16-35 and the 100-400 are on the camera more than anything else - but if I am shooting for someone else, it depends on the shoot - 85mm is used fairly often - love that lens - and the 24-70 when I can be bothered wrestling with it (mine is the Sigma version that has had more than one run in with inclement weather). The 70-200 doesn't get a lot of use, surprisingly. Of a thousand shots last weekend, the 70-200 was used for about 6. The 100-400 did the rest. (Car rally - spectator points are not close to the action.)

ok, my suggestion for Monday is as follows.
base ourselves at one of the parks in the city area - eg Captain Burke (under the Story Bridge, 'Roo Point, Roma St, Southbank, Kurilpa (under the William Jolly), City Botanic or New Farm with the aim of perhaps having a bit of a picnic/bbq for lunch and the time before and after to roam the streets taking photos. This way people can come and go during the day as they please and those with kidlets can let them run around on the grass and then hello impromptu family photos from the rest of us ;)

I would probably advise against the park under the william jolly bridge, the last few times i have been through there, there has been quite a few not so happy hobos hanging around the tables there

Just got back from Soccer this morning. So COLD!, well at least most of the other parents were. I dressed for the occasion as was toasty warn. Do you know how hard it is to change lenses with gloves on? No one said anything about my beanie.

yeah I actually exported into PSCS2 and cloned it out... then I got lazy and just exported straight from Lightroom :D HAHAHAH... so that's pretty much straight from RAW -> JPG. :)
For those who were asking about exif viewers... I found fxif failed me on about 3 or 4 occasions..... so I found this one... shows HEAPs of info and adds a menu item on the right click context menu for Exif information :)

Now for a few things from me...
1. The city/south bank sounds really good to me. Anyone brave enough to suggest a time?
2. How much would one be expecting to pay for a second hand 430ex? Given that i can get one in town for $380 ish new.
3. Im not too happy with a certain mobile phone provider at the moment. Took back a phone that i bought about 4 months ago because it has never worked properly. They took it and said they would send it away to get repaired but it would take 2-3 weeks. Thats a long time to be without a phone, especially when i have just spent the past week handing out 150+ buisiness cards with my mobile number on them. So i ask them about a replacement phone... "sure, you can have one but with a $150 cash deposit." I dont think so, that cash is going towards a new lens/flash
Turns out i was lucky enough to scab an old one off one of my friends to tide me over. If it was any other network, then i could have used one of my old ones.
[subliminal message]I think everyone should add at least one new 580EX II to their collection[/subliminal message]

Just been playing around with Lightroom the last couple of days. I must admit that it is pretty nice to work with, albiet a little bit slow when importing RAW files off the card to the library. I will keep using it this week and then decide if its worth overhauling my workflow from cs2.
[subliminal message]Three really needs a 50mm prime of some sort[/subliminal message]
Yeah i use lightroom too... but it's only cos I can't use RawShooter. Rawshooter is what used to be Lightroom... but now it's a bit hacked and bloated... but i still use it for basic raw processing. It's sharpening and nosie removal is pretty crap.
Poor little Jessica, I just want to give her a big hug!
Ah she loves it :D you should see the sequence of shots... happy then sorta whingy and then crying all at once... great capture from helen :)
Hi Kinnon, actually today is a lovely day here. No wind and flawless blue skies, reasonable temps also.
I've just back from the Volleyball. Time to process some shots.
Ooo can't wait to see the vollyball shots... remember if you wanna play with the 50mm 1.4, let me know... ;)
cs3 is great.. the new camera raw is quite good!
still no decision on a time tomorrow? and where we meet/start?
Hrmm... might have to try CS3 when I migrate back to PC (over the whole mac thing and am going to sell it)... does everything but a few things... just not quite there... I think if I had an intel mac, i wouldn't mind so muhc... :) new parallels has hardware acceleration too :)

Thansk Feng, posting soon. :D I wish I had of had it today. I just couldn't frame things how I wanted with any of the lenses I tried. I gave the Siggy 30 a go and got some interesting shots. It performed well focus wise, but was too wide. While the 85 was too narrow for some of the stuff right on top of me at the net. Gonna have to buy a 50 F1.4 I guess if I continue to do these. Means I'll have a 50 1.8 to off load - hint hint anyone?
Mmm if your going back to PC I can send some subliminal messages to you to buy IMatch.

No, was about the only one I left at home. Although I haven't tried it I think the focus couldn't cut the mustard, except for some types of shots.
Anyhoo, here they are here (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?p=3350899#post3350899). Would you believe the women's game was AVL - Aust Volleyball League. Wonder how many sports I could have done this without oodles of accreditation?

David, do you mind if I ask where you got CS3 from - and how much?
I've become aware that when I get the 1dIII the raw files won't be supported by CS2 so I've got no choice but to upgrade  Evil software companies.

My dad just suggested that me and him take the cameras up to mt coot-tha again later on. One thing, i dont have a remote release for the 20d yet (everywhere i have been to wants $90 for it and i can get it for $70 from photobuff).
Would i get away with just using MLU, self timer and one of the set longer shutter speeds that the camera has?

I havn't got my timer remote switch thing yet... so I set the camera to whatever settings I'm after and use the self timer thing and just wait for it... cumbersome at the best of times, but it works :)

Yeah there's nothing wrong with using the self-timer in lieu of a remote release. It's like a built in backup for those times when I forget to throw the remote in the bag

I just said Central... cause I know where it is. Lol, and I reckon it'd be easy to go anywhere from there.
So, we'll probably be going to the park lands (according to how many people have said they want to) and... anywhere else we feel like. :D
So, plan to get to Central around 10am, and we'll just wait til everyone arrives (unless told to meet them somewhere else).
Where about in the station should we meet - maybe the outside McDonald's (you can't get inside the station without a ticket...)
I have no credit on my mobile, so my phone probably won't be much use... but anyone want to share theirs via PM so we can keep in contact?
